Aimee’s aviary by Aimee French of the award winning education program “Learning To See”

In addition to heading up Focus on the Masters’ award winning education program, “Learning To See”, Aimee French is an artist whose latest creations are for the birds.

Well, not exactly for the birds. Rather, they are birds lovingly created by Aimee out of hanks of wool, assembled with bits of wire and a few sticks and stones.  Each creature has a distinct personality and is named accordingly. Shown in the photo above are Sasha, Bronson & Fernando!

Aimee’s aviary has been featured in several recent art boutiques, most notably Studio Channel Islands Art Center and Focus on the Masters, where a portion of the proceeds is dedicated to Learning To See Outreach. This program was originally designed for middle school students.  Typically an eight-week program with lessons that highlight the life and work of local master artists, Learning To See expands the students’ greater understanding of the relationship of their core curriculum studies to the world they live in.  The program has been modified for use with adults dealing with mental illness in a joint effort with Turning Point Foundation.  Children and adults quite literally learn to see the world through a different prism, one that nurtures focused concentration and the wonders of creativity.

Artwork by Learning To See students from DATA (DeAnza) Middle School in Ventura and Fremont Middle School in Oxnard is currently on exhibit at the Main Oxnard Library through January, 2017.  For additional information about Learning To See, go to FocusOnTheMasters.com.

On Dec.19 families, friends and the public attended the ribbon cutting ceremony to unveil the colorful new lion sculpture that is actually a drinking water fountain at Westpark Community Center at 450 West Harrison Street in West Ventura.

“We thank the Ventura Downtown Lions Club for donating $5,000 to make the lion fountain possible,” said Youth Programs Supervisor Mario Robinson. “This is another great project that helps us continually enhance and upgrade Westpark Community Center.”

“Westpark youth are very excited about drinking from the new water fountain because its spout is inside the lion’s open mouth,” said Westpark Coordinator Anita Diaz. “Its whimsical design will encourage kids to stay hydrated while enjoying outdoor play.”

Westpark’s mission is to provide a variety of safe, educational and affordable youth programs and services that develop self-esteem, leadership, character development, sportsmanship and health and physical fitness.

For 93 years the Ventura Downtown Lions Club has launched many successful fundraising projects including camperships for deaf children, DARE programs, student scholarships and Thanksgiving food baskets. It has also supported other organizations such as Meals on Wheels, Project Understanding, Habitat for Humanity, and, most recently, the new Pediatric Eye Center to be established at the Ventura County Medical Center.

The Lions’ donation of $41,675.28 will purchase a retinal imaging camera to screen babies for Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) as well as other needed equipment for the Ventura County Medical Center. The Ventura Downtown Lions Club also founded The Cottage Home in 1969 – it’s the only foster home in the United States founded and supported by a local Lions Club.

“Each Lion member has special and unique talents and skills, that, when combined with the talent and skills of others, allows us to do more as a club than we could ever do as individuals,” said Lions President Randy Jewell, commenting about the club’s long record of success.

DUI/Drivers License Checkpoint held on Dec. 17 at Thompson Blvd at California St

The Ventura Police Department Traffic Unit conducted a DUI/Drivers License Checkpoint on Dec.17.

The deterrent effect of DUI checkpoints is a proven resource in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol or drug involved crashes.  Research shows that crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20 percent when well-publicized DUI checkpoints and proactive DUI patrols are conducted routinely.

Officers were looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment with officers checking drivers for proper licensing delaying motorists only momentarily.

Recent statistics reveal that 30 percent of drivers in fatal crashes had one or more drugs in their systems. Everyone should be mindful that if you’re taking medication – whether prescription or over-the-counter – drinking even small amounts of alcohol can greatly intensify the impairment affects.

Drivers caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, other expenses that can exceed $10,000 not to mention the embarrassment when friends and family find out.

Funding for this checkpoint is provided to the Ventura Police Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reminding everyone to ‘Report Drunk Driver – Call 9-1-1’.

The checkpoint was established at 9:00pm and was located on Thompson Blvd at California St. The checkpoint concluded at 3:00 am and at the conclusion of the DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint the results are as follows:

  • 301 – Vehicles through the checkpoint
  • 2- DUI arrests
  • 1- Felony warrant arrest.
  • 19 – Field Sobriety Examinations performed
  • 1 – Misc. citations issued
  • 0 – Vehicles impounded (10851 VC & 14601 VC)
  • 2 – Drivers cited for driving without a license

Armed Robbery with Arrests

On December 7, at 1am, the Ventura Police Department Command Center received a call from two victims, indicating that they had been robbed at knifepoint.  Ventura Police Department patrol officers responded to assist the victims and learned the following. The victims were walking together in the area of Olive Street and Mission Avenue, when they were approached by two male suspects.  One of the suspects threatened the victims with a knife and demanded the victims’ property.  Fearing for their lives, the victims handed over their property, which included a wallet and a set of keys.  The suspects then entered a white Nissan Altima and fled the area.

As patrol officers responded to assist the victims, another VPD patrol officer observed a white Nissan Altima traveling at a high rate of speed on the southbound 101 Freeway near Victoria Avenue. The officer initiated a traffic stop on that vehicle, believing that it may be the suspect vehicle.  There were two occupants in the vehicle, who were later identified as 21 year old Oxnard resident Francisco Banda and 20 year old Oxnard resident Alejandro Araujo.  The victims were able to positively identify Banda and Araujo as the suspects who had robbed them.  During a search of the suspect vehicle, officers found property belonging to the victims.  It was later determined that the weapon brandished by the suspects was likely a screwdriver.

Both suspects were placed under arrest for robbery and conspiracy to commit a crime.  Both were lodged at the Ventura County Jail.

Officers checked the area and located Puckett walking on Harbor in front of the Crown plaza.  Puckett was positively identified by Garcia, and was in possession of Garcia’s property.

Strong Armed Robbery

On December 12, at approximately 12:45pm, the Ventura Police Department Command Center received a 911 call of a strong armed robbery that had just occurred at Regency Theater, 1440 Eastman Ave.  It was reported the suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money in a silver sedan, possibly a Ford, with paper plates.

During the investigation, officers learned that a theater employee had just returned from making a deposit at a local bank.  He was walking in the parking lot of the theater when the suspect vehicle approached him.  The suspect, a Black male in his 20’s wearing a hospital mask and dark hooded sweatshirt exited the vehicle and tackled the employee.  The employee was holding a deposit bag, and a struggle ensued over the bag.  The second suspect, a Black male in his 20’s wearing a green hooded sweatshirt, had been driving the suspect vehicle also exited the vehicle and tried to forcefully take the deposit bag from the employee.  The employee released the bag, at which time both suspects go back into the vehicle and fled the area.

Felony Discharge of a Firearm

On December 12, at approximately 10:30pm, the Ventura Police Department Command Center received a 911 call of shots being fired on the promenade near the Harbor Blvd. parking structure.  It was reported several bystanders had disarmed the suspect and were trying to detain him.  Prior to units arriving on scene the suspect, later identified as 45 year old vagrant John Eldridge, was able to leave the area on foot.  He was located by officers near the pier and detained.

During the investigation officers determined that Eldridge and several other vagrants were gathered on the promenade when they got into a verbal argument.  At one point, Eldridge removed a firearm from his waistband and fired two rounds into the air.  The other vagrants involved in the altercation disarmed Eldridge and tried to physically detain him.  Eldridge was able to break free and left the area on foot.  He was not able to regain possession of the firearm.

At the conclusion of the investigation, Eldridge was arrested for felony discharging of a firearm in public.  He was transported to VCMC for treatment of injuries he sustained during the physical altercation and later booked at the Ventura County Jail.

No one else was injured as a result of the incident.
