In an effort to reduce impulse adoptions and protect the health and well-being of shelter rabbits, the Ventura County Animal Services (VCAS) Bunny Brigade will not accept walk-in rabbit adoptions during Easter week.
Here are five important reasons why rabbits are not suitable gifts:
• Rabbits live an average of 10 to 12 years.
• They are not low-maintenance pets.
• They require specialized care from an exotic animal veterinarian.
• Their teeth grow continuously and need monitoring to prevent serious health issues.
• They need just as much love, time and attention as a dog or cat.
This Easter, opt for chocolate bunnies or plush toys instead—these make festive gifts without the long-term commitment or risk to animal welfare. Please do not buy live animals as gifts.
Rabbit adoptions remain available by appointment only and will continue to be thoroughly screened to ensure the best possible match for both bunny and adopter.
