The Humane Society of Ventura County recently welcomed a group of Veterinary Technician students from Ventura College for an educational field trip that brought classroom learning into a real-world shelter environment. As part of an infectious disease course, the students spent the day exploring how disease prevention, animal care and community outreach intersect in a working animal shelter.
During the visit, students toured the facility and met with HSVC Director of Veterinary Services Dr. Christina Sisk, who shared insights into infectious diseases commonly seen in shelter settings and the protocols used to manage them. From daily sanitation practices to animal intake procedures, students gained a deeper understanding of how shelters work to maintain animal health while preventing the spread of illness.
A key focus of the visit was infectious disease control. Students participated in discussions on topics including fomites, zoonotic diseases, proper disinfection techniques and the role of vaccinations in disease prevention. Seeing these concepts applied in a real-world shelter setting reinforced the importance of strict protocols and attention to detail in veterinary medicine.
The group also learned more about HSVC’s role in the community. Dr. Sisk introduced students to the shelter’s mobile Pet Wellness Clinic and highlighted the low-cost services offered through the HSVC Cares program, including vaccinations and spay/neuter services for local pet owners.
The educational experience continued in the shelter’s barn, where HSVC Emergency Response and Equine Manager Christina Malleck introduced students to large-animal care. Students met adoptable horses Tundra and Henry and learned about their backgrounds and medical histories. They also explored the unique needs of equines, including daily care routines, handling techniques and housing considerations.
Opportunities like this provide valuable hands-on learning experiences for the next generation of veterinary professionals while highlighting the many facets of animal welfare work. The Humane Society of Ventura County is proud to support educational programs that inspire and prepare students for careers dedicated to improving the lives of animals. HSVC thanks the Ventura College Veterinary Technician students for their visit and looks forward to seeing the impact they will make in the veterinary field.
