Ventura City Council makes progress on Economic Development in Focus Area One

by city staff

On July 24, 2017 the Ventura City Council approved a General Plan Amendment, Specific Plan amendment, and Sign Agreement within the Auto Center Specific Plan that will make the surrounding area significantly more conducive to economic investment. The amendments pave the way to increased economic vitality by improving accessibility, visibility, and circulation in the Ventura Auto Center.

In January, the City Council reinstated economic development and vitality as one of its top priorities, emphasizing progress on Focus Area One and the Auto Center Specific Plan. Ventura Auto Center employs more than 1,000 workers and is the City’s top revenue generator. The new amendments are consistent with the policies and actions contained in the 2005 General Plan and make the area more supportive of business investment.

“This is a significant step for economic well-being in Ventura,” said City Manager Mark Watkins. “With the City Council’s support, Focus Area One is positioned for long term growth and expansion.”

The revisions to the Auto Center Specific Plan add 7.5 acres to the Specific Plan area to facilitate a road widening, improve circulation for motorists by creating safer vehicular travel lanes, and the installation of extra signage, like you can get from this company.

The adoption of the Auto Center Specific Plan Sign Agreement allows additional signage locations and an 82 foot high multiple-user, electronic, reader-board sign. A sign content agreement limits the type of content displayed and allocates the amount of time dedicated to specific types of advertising, including public service announcements such as Amber Alerts and Ventura events. Visitors and residents will see an improvement in the identity of the Auto Center with new signage visible from US 101 and Olivas Park Drive.

Last year, the City installed a new sewer pipeline to bypass the decommissioned Montalvo wastewater plant. An earthen levee will also be constructed to protect the site from the adjacent Santa Clara River and allow for new construction and the highly anticipated extension of Olivas Park Drive which will connect to Auto Center Drive and Johnson Drive, significantly improving access to the auto dealers.

Finally!! The Ventura County Fair runs Wednesday, August 3, through Sunday, August 13, featuring tons of music in and around the fairgrounds (Seabreeze and Station stages) as well as the featured national acts on the Grandstand stage most evenings. The concerts are always included in the price of admission. Here’s the schedule: Thursday, August 3, a double bill with Smash Mouth and Sugar Ray; Friday, August 4, it’s the return of Huey Lewis and the News; Saturday, August 5, dust off your dancing shoes for KC and the Sunshine Band; Sunday is the traditionally Dia de la Familia and this year it features Chiquis Rivera, Noel Torres and Banda Carnaval; Monday, August 7, it’s country star Billy Currington; Tuesday at 1 it’s the Spinners, then 7:30 it’s Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds; Wednesday, August 9, it’s rock with Shinedown; and to wrap up the concert series it’s Wynonna and the Big Noise on Friday, August 11. Oh! Speaking of the fair, the Ventura County Fair Parade rolls down Main Street downtown Ventura Saturday, August 5 at 10 am. There’s always plenty of music; I’ll be hanging out on the Squashed Grapes float along with the Barrelhouse Wailers.

And speaking of Squashed Grapes, they have quite the week lined up with Lett, Mancini & Dutt on Wednesday, August 2, followed by Nees Bees featuring Nee Sackey and friends on Thursday, then it’s “Organtua” on Friday with Karl Hunter, and Jimmy and Mario Calire followed up on Saturday, August 5, with Tia Brazda (from Vancouver) who has been touring all over the United States and Canada this Summer.

Music Under the Stars is in full swing and it’s as popular as ever. Coming up Saturday, August 5, it’s Orquestra Charangoa and then Saturday, August 12, it’s a celebration of the music of Joni Mitchell. It’s better to get your tickets in advance, but if you can’t, be sure to check before heading out to ensure tickets are still available on the City’s website (www.CityofVentura.ca.gov).

And finally, congratulations to Night Demon who landed themselves on the same bill as Ozzy Osborne, the Deftones and Prophets of Rage when they play Ozzfest this year, November 4 at Glen Helen Amphitheater. Now that freakin’ rocks!!

Vol. 10, No. 22 – Aug 2 – Aug 15, 2017 – Police Reports

by Cindy Summers

Police reports are provided to us by the Ventura  Police Department and are not the opinions of  the Ventura Breeze. All suspects mentioned  are assumed to be innocent until proven guilty  in a court of law.

Armed Robbery Arrest

On July 19 at 9:40pm, the victim was sitting in his vehicle in the parking lot of Skating Plus when the suspects drove up in a vehicle. They approached the victim and then started reaching into his vehicle and taking some of his personal property. When he protested, one suspect produced a handgun, pointed it at the victim, and took his valuables. The suspects fled the area and the victim was able to enter Skating Plus to get help and call 9-1-1.

Responding officers obtained detailed suspect information and quickly determined a possible suspect. Investigative leads resulted in officers locating the suspects in the Downtown area of Ventura. The suspects of the robbery were identified as 31 year old Santa Paula resident Terry Stephenson and 19 year old Oxnard resident Alexander Duarte, and they were found to be in possession of the victim’s property that had been stolen during the robbery.

Stephenson was arrested for Robbery, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Felon in Possession of Ammunition, and Possession of a Stolen Firearm. Duarte was arrested for Robbery. Both suspects were booked at the Ventura County Jail.

Recovered Stolen Vehicle and Arrest

On July 19 at 3:25pm, the Ventura Police Department Command Center received a call from the victim of a stolen vehicle reporting that a relative saw the vehicle driving in the area of the 2600 block of E. Main St. Officers responded and began checking the area, ultimately finding it parked in a parking lot to the rear of Auto Zone store. One officer detained a subject, later identified as 36 year old vagrant Jason Sevier, standing next to the vehicle.

A second subject, later identified as 31 year old Andrew Renteria, fled on foot when he saw the officers patrol vehicle approaching. Additional officers began searching for Renteria, and found him several blocks away in a neighborhood and he was detained.

At the end of the investigation, Sevier was arrested and booked into the Ventura County Jail for possession of a stolen vehicle. Renteria, who was determined to be the passenger in the vehicle, was arrested and booked into the Ventura County Jail for being in possession of stolen property and providing a false name to a police officer.

Vehicle Pursuit

On July 20 at 11:30am, an officer on patrol observed a known wanted felon driving in the area of Darling Rd. and Gardner Ave. and attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle. The subject, later identified as 49 year old Ventura resident Michael Holladay, failed to yield and a pursuit was initiated.

The pursuit continued on several residential streets, during which time Holladay drove at speeds of 60 mph on Telephone Rd. and ran several stop signs. In the area of Halifax St. and Big Horn St., Holladay exited the vehicle while it was still moving and fled on foot. He entered a nearby water culvert, which led into the Santa Clara River bottom.

Due to the heavy brush, officers quickly lost sight of him and did not pursue Holladay into the river bottom. He was able to elude the officers.

When he is located, Holladay will be arrested for felony evading. The felony warrant he currently has is also for felony evading arrest. Holladay is Post Release Offender.

Anyone with information on Holladay’s whereabouts is asked to call the Ventura Police Department at 650-8010.

Stolen Vehicle Arrest

On July 24 at 8:10am, a Ventura Police officer noticed a suspicious vehicle in the Motel 6 parking lot that matched the description of vehicle which was recently reported stolen. While the officer was attempting to confirm the status of the vehicle, the suspect, 49 year old Ventura resident Mary Filippi entered the vehicle and drove away.

Officers conducted an enforcement stop as the vehicle exited the parking lot and took Filippi into custody without incident. Fillipi was later booked into the Ventura County Jail for being in possession of a stolen vehicle.

Armed Robbery

On July 26, at approximately 10pm, the Ventura Police Department Command Center received a 911 call from an employee of Subway, 2950 Johnson Dr., reporting that an armed robbery had just occurred. The suspects, one armed with a handgun, were last seen fleeing westbound from the store on foot.

During the investigation officers learned there were two employees inside the store preparing to close, when both suspects entered the store. The one suspect armed with a gun pointed it at the employees and demanded money. He then jumped the counter. The employees started to run towards the back of the store, at which time the suspect with the gun grabbed one of them and threatened her. The armed suspect then took an undisclosed amount of cash from the register and fled from the store.

The second suspect did not display any weapons and remained on the front side of the counter. He also fled from the store.

Officers checked the area, but were unable to locate the suspects. The two employees were not physically injured as a result of this crime.

The suspects were described as follows: Suspect #1: Black Male, 20’s, wearing a black sweatshirt and armed with a handgun – Suspect #2: Unknown Race Male, wearing a red striped sweatshirt

When home bound senior citizens need groceries they think “SHOP AHOY.”

Full shopping carts ready to go to needy seniors.

by Tony Miller, President of Shop Ahoy

Every Tuesday morning around 9:00 am in Von’s at Victoria and Telegraph you’ll see the result of their calls. As many as 25 shopping carts filled with groceries lined up waiting to be delivered to seniors.

SHOP AHOY is a non-profit volunteer program in Ventura County which has one mission, the weekly shopping and delivery of groceries to home bound seniors. It’s a non-profit program whose members are all volunteers, each of whom gives their time to serving men and women who are home bound. The mission of SHOP AHOY is to assist its clients to remain in their homes independently.

The program serves five cities; Camarillo, Oxnard, Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks and Ventura. Each week a volunteer calls his or her senior and records their order, and it’s not only groceries. Greeting cards, fresh flowers, stamps, deli and over the counter medicine regularly fill the carts.

“I gave up driving at age 90. Shop Ahoy makes a big difference in my life” says a 92 year old Ventura resident.

Cheryl Hollandsworth is the site leader of the Ventura group. She’s been serving the seniors for over 12 years. “Each person has different tastes and favorites and it’s rewarding to see the looks on their faces when they get their favorite ice cream or their special cookies. It’s a labor of love” says Cheryl.

Many volunteers take out the trash, take them to the doctors, sometimes help them clean house. Changing light bulbs, oiling door hinges and opening bottle caps are roles the volunteers fill. Many visit during the week just to talk; after all, it’s not uncommon that homebound people don’t get many visitors.

Volunteers wear different hats. Some are home bound themselves so they call their people each week. Others shop the orders and others make weekly deliveries, although most shop and deliver.

Age isn’t a criterion for volunteering. Several retired teachers enjoy the shopping and delivering to clients which creates special friendships that continue. Several high school students volunteer during the summer.

Seniors come to know SHOP AHOY by word-of-mouth referrals from other seniors and organizations.

“We also get a lot of referrals from visiting nurses. The more people hear about us the more people we can serve,” said Tony Miller, President of SHOP AHOY.

Members of the Board of Directors are also volunteers; they’re shoppers/delivers and they speak to other service organizations to get the word out.

Shop Ahoy depends almost solely on donations and grants although the economy has reduced grant availability. shopahoy.org

Do you think medical marijuana businesses should be allowed in the City of Ventura?

William “Bill” Moran
age 54
Real Estate Sales and Finance
“That’s such a hot topic – in general, I’m opposed to the legalization of marijuana, it’s an intoxicating drug that we don’t need. We’re lowering our standards and losing the difference between right and wrong, everything’s becoming tolerable – we’re living in a moral abyss.”

Jill Guertner
age 53
Teacher
“I never thought I’d say this but, yes for some it’s a necessity for medical relief. I have personal experience with someone who needs this for chronic pain and sleep issues, it’s the only thing that’s worked.”

Trevor Morgan
age 22
works at Salzer’s Records
“Good question, I think it should be allowed and here’s why – residents have been very hesitant to have legal marijuana in the City due to an increase in crime that it might bring, that’s a short-sided view and the bigger picture isn’t being seen.”

Jonell McLain
age 71
Real Estate Broker
“Absolutely! I think it’s a proven fact that it’s safer than most of the pharmaceuticals, it’s the will of the people (to make it legal) and politics that keeps it away. I don’t believe it’s a gateway drug and it should be regulated like alcohol. Not to mention the tax revenues!”

Mattie Richardson
age 35
Manager at Salzer’s Records
“I lean more toward medical marijuana for people dealing with pain management, anxiety, Parkinson’s and seizures because I’ve seen opiate addiction.”

Marc Abbink
age 54 Actor
“I don’t think so, even though I think medical marijuana has its purpose, I don’t think dispensaries would be a good thing to have in Ventura. I think it would have a criminal element and attract a lot of undesirables to our city.”
