Vol. 13, No. 1 – Oct 9 – Oct 22, 2019 – Opinion/Editorial

∙Wow, another year of publication of the Ventura Breeze. As we commence Vol.13, No.1, there are so many people to thank. Our advertisers, who keep us in business, and also are helping to support another local business. Plus, all the wonderful people that contribute to our community newspaper; our writers, photographers, distributors (you can see all their names to the left in our masthead). And especially our dedicated, very intelligent readers.

A special thanks to Account Executive Breezy Gledhill, who keeps the money coming in, and works so hard to keep our advertisers happy. To Alfred J. Lewis, at Studio Nothing, who makes the paper look so nice (both are lefties like me). And, also to Cindy Summers, who maintains our website (and other things).

When my daughter, Staci, and I launched the Ventura Breeze thirteen years ago we weren’t sure that it would last for even one year, so to all, again, a hearty thank you.

∙ Ventura has been voted No.1 on Zillow’s list of cities with the most pleasant weather in the country! Said Zillow, “Like a trip to the beach, we’re here for good weather, so without further ado, the number one pleasant weather city on Zillow’s list is … Ventura, California. The natural beauty on the Central Coast, just south of Santa Barbara, is casual, artsy, and outdoorsy, with first-rate beaches, surfing, and hiking. And with close proximity to farms, wineries, and the bountiful Pacific, there is no shortage of fresh, delicious food and drink to indulge in.

We knew it all along, right? Now a bunch of outsiders are going to move here. How dare them – no one should have moved here after I did.

∙ Our Building Official (head of the building and safety department) Yolanda Bundy has accepted a position with the City of Malibu as their Environmental Sustainability Director/ Chief Building Official. A very big loss for Ventura. She is very well respected in the industry and by her staff. She will be missed.

After getting us through the aftermath of the Thomas Fire, Community Development Director Jeff Lambert (her boss) left to go to Oxnard and now Yolanda. We seem to lose department heads at an alarming rate.

∙The city of Ventura is part of a coalition of 33 California counties and cities asking the Supreme Court to review a federal court ruling that cities cannot arrest or punish people for sleeping on public property unless adequate shelter space is available.

Boise v. Martin dealt specifically with the city of Boise, Idaho, it is now set a precedent and is binding on all federal trial courts in California and other western states.

Said the ruling by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, which covers nine western states,

“Cities cannot criminalize indigent, homeless people for sleeping outdoors, on public property, on the false premise they had a choice in the matter.”

The decision means cities can no longer enforce their ordinances unless they can provide enough shelter space available for their homeless population. The Supreme Court is expected to decide whether to hear the case next year.

So, we can’t just blame our city council and police department for not taking immediate action.

Pursuant to this, Ventura’s first year-round homeless shelter is hoping to open in January in the county-owned building at 2323 Knoll Drive.

The Ventura Social Services Task Force is hosting workshops to give the community more input on the proposed shelter.

The 55-bed facility is a joint venture between the city and county, with the two splitting the estimated $1.2 million annual operating costs.

∙Some good news for veterans – the new 41,000-square-foot VA clinic is scheduled to open in 2021, at 5250 Ralston St., which was where the VC Star operated for many years. The building has been empty for a very long time.

Congresswoman Julia Brownley, D-Westlake Village, announced the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has agreed to lease the site. The property will be developed into an outpatient clinic. The VA will pay an annual lease of $3.1 million along with a lump sum payment of $9.7 million to develop the new space, according to Brownley’s office.

∙ On our cover is news about our five new police officers, of which three are women. Congratulations to all of them.

∙Finally, Ventura’s City Council has approved new rules on the delivery of recreational and medicinal marijuana within city limits. The ordinance, adopted by a 7-0 vote, followed a change in state law that mandated deliveries be allowed by state-licensed cannabis operators, so the Council had no choice.

The deliveries can be made from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with restrictions, under the new ordinance. Between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., marijuana can’t be delivered within 600 feet of a public or private K-12 school. The Council’s next step should be to allow dispensaries in Ventura.

∙I just found out that “no trump” in bridge is a really good hand, so I’m going to start playing the game (will it take more than a week to learn?).

Speaking about Trump, I finally figured him out. He wants to be impeached so he could star in a TV reality show called, “Impeach the President”.

On this show he would play a very inept President (he could fake it) who does stupid things, and an “expert” panel would decide if a President could be impeached for these actions.

How “Not to Run a Democracy101.” President Trump again suggested starting his own global news network to “put some really talented people and get a real voice out there. Not a voice that is fake.”

Vol. 13, No. 1 – Oct 9 – Oct 22, 2019 – Movie Review

Movie Review by Cindy Summers
Abominable

Breeze rating from 1 to 4 palm trees, 4 being best.

Abominable centers around a young determined female protagonist named Yi (Chloe Bennet) who finds a young Yeti on the roof of her apartment building in Shanghai and sets out to return it to it’s home, Mt. Everest, which is why she named the Yeti Everest. Yi is constantly challenged during her heroic quest by a wealthy investor named Burnish (Eddie Izzard) and zoologist Dr. Zara (Sarah Paulson) who have their own plans to reap financial reward from capturing Everest. Through this epic adventure, Yi learns that with the help of Jin (Tenzing Norgay Trainor) and Peng (Albert Tsai), and Everest’s special gifts revealed along the way, that anything is possible. Released by Universal Pictures, Written and Directed by Jill Culton, and starring the voices of Chloe Bennet as Yi, Tenzing Norgay Trainor as Jin and Albert Tsai as Peng.

Director Jill Culton conveyed conservation messages through the film regarding exotic animals and the importance of them living in their natural habitat. There were insightful lesson learned throughout the movie, such as Peng’s comment regarding Everest being connected to nature like Yi was connected to her violin, as well as plenty of adult commentary, like when Burnish questions out loud the integrity of his plans regarding Everest upon recognizing his unique, exotic status.

Chloe Bennet (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) was perfect in the role of Yi, as was Tenzing Norgay Trainor as Jin and Albert Tsai as Peng, as the animated characters were actually almost identical to the real actors and played a huge role in the realism of the animation – worth the visuals here to show what I mean.

The real star of this animated masterpiece is writer-director Jill Culton, who studied at the Character Animation program at the California Institute of the Arts, where she later taught animation. She’s been in the animation industry for 30 years and previously worked on other well know animated movies including Toy Story, Toy Story 2, A Bug’s Life, Curious George, Open Season, Open Season 2 and Hotel Transylvania. Colton began working with Deamworks Animation on Abominable in 2010, stepped off the project in 2016 and another team took over, then came back to direct the movie.

Abominable is a heartwarming movie filled with amazing visual brilliance and magical adventure the whole family can enjoy. It’s ranked No.1 on the Top Box Office list grossing $21M it’s first week and look for it to win the Best Animated Movie at this year’s Oscars. I would recommend seeing it in Cinema XD, which offers trillions of colors on a colossal screen for you to be totally immersed in this spectacular animated adventure.

Rated: PG (for some action and mild rude humor)
97 minutes

Keep On Recycling!

Mixed messages about the tumultuous recycling industry may have confused people, but the folks at Harrison’s partner Gold Coast Recycling want everyone to get the message: Do not change the outstanding recycling habits you’ve formed over the past several decades.

Gold Coast continues to accept all curbside and commercial recycling – and the company has a brand new picking line and a new, advanced sorting system to ensure that all recyclable materials get processed efficiently.

“We are still recycling all acceptable materials that our residential and commercial customers put in their recycling containers,” said Harrison spokeswoman Nan Drake. “With the new equipment, our process is running more smoothly than ever.”

“The machinery is doing great,” Gold Coast General Manager George Harrison said of the new systems, which went online this year after a four-month-long installation/transition process.

“We can run the new system much faster and cleaner,” Harrison said. “As a result, our monthly average diversion is significantly better than before and the cleaner material is far more acceptable for the marketplace even though it is selling for far less money.”

After flourishing for decades, the recycling market in China is all but gone now, owing to extremely tight restrictions that took hold this year, but Gold Coast is cultivating other markets in Asia and around the world. Even in a down global market, recycling continues.

The bottom line is this: If you do your part and keep filling your blue barrels and white bins with recyclable paper, plastic, glass and metal at home and at work, you can rest assured that Gold Coast will do its part and recycle it.

Vol. 13, No. 1 – Oct 9 – Oct 22, 2019 – Forever Homes Wanted

Hi: I’m Louie a 13 year old Corgi/Chihuahua/Golden Lab X. Sadly my owner passed away and I’m heartbroken and confused that she is no longer around to love and take care of me. Thankfully I’m in a loving foster home, but what I really want is a forever home.

I would do best in a quiet adult only home as the only pet in the home. I enjoy going for walks and being with my person. I’d make a loving loyal companion.

I hope my special someone is out there who will let me live out my days in the comfort of a home surrounded by love. Canine Adoption and Rescue League C.A.R.L. CARL Adoption Center-call 644-7387 for more information.

This beautiful 3-year-old Shepherd is reported to get along with children which is a bonus if you are looking for a family dog. Honeycomb even did well when she met a group of senior citizens including a 90 year old in a wheel chair.  She was a sweet girl who did not jump up on them!

Paradise Chevrolet is celebrating its 40th year of business in Ventura County

In 1979 the Gregory family generations were already keeping the family values.

In the late 70s, Bob and Nancy Gregory were in search of a location for their first GM dealership when they came across Ventura County. While driving up Victoria Ave. towards the mountains for the first time, Nancy exclaimed, “This place is Paradise!” to which Bob replied, “Paradise Chevrolet,” and the rest is history.

In the fall of 1979, Bob and Nancy opened the Paradise Chevrolet dealership in Ventura. The Gregory’s main goal was to build a legacy founded on loyalty and community, which they still stand by today. Bob’s gift for levity and understanding created a deep-seated loyalty with his employees. Today, Paradise has several employees celebrating anywhere from 20 to 38 years with the dealership.

Raised by a humble family of sharecroppers, Bob had compassion for people in all circumstances. Even during recessions, Bob believed in building relationships and having a customer for life. He made it known to his employees that the customer experience was important and often stated, “We want to hold our heads up in the community because we are part of this community.” According to Nancy, because of this, they have a high number of loyal repeat customers which is unusual in the car industry.

Nancy was also an integral part of the success and expansion of Paradise Chevrolet. Starting from the beginning, she was a jack of all trades. She specifically jumped from department to department in order to identify issues that affect the efficiency of their business. Over the years she then became the lead in purchasing property and designing new dealerships, and together, Bob and Nancy build a GM Legacy in Southern California.

In December of 2018, Bob Gregory passed away leaving behind his legacy in the hands of his family. Today, while Paradise Chevrolet and Ventura County will always miss Bob’s southern charm, Nancy has gracefully taken charge. It’s Nancy’s hope to see the next 40 years of Paradise Chevrolet’s success with her children, grandchildren and other that have made Paradise Chevrolet a Ventura County icon.
