Happy birthday, Dr. Seuss

“Is there a doctor in the house?” Photo by Bernie Goldstein

Students at Pierpont School celebrated the 116th birthday of the author of children’s books with a program called Read Across America. Read Across America was launched by the National Education Association in 1998 and coincides with the birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel.

Educators and students took part in the book event with an assembly and activities to an auditorium full of students.

Jennifer Loudermilk Jennifer  organizer and coordinator of this program stated “We love to read at Pierpont!! We hold our annual Book Exchange this day to help share the love of reading! Students bring a book to share and get to go home with a different book. All classrooms participate and this year was especially special because we have a new courtyard which offered a wonderful place for the students to sit and read their books! This year we also held two assemblies with our third-grade teacher Scott Lancet in full Cat In The Hat costume. At each assembly Mr. Lancet presented a power point presentation of Horton Hears a Who while the story was read allowed by our teachers. It was a great day and another wonderful example of just how important it is to read! it is to read.”

Plastic Free Ventura campaign started in the summer of 2018

by Laura Oergel

The Ventura County chapter of the Surfrider Foundation started the Plastic Free Ventura campaign in the summer of 2018. Led by core volunteer Juli Marciel, she reviewed 120 examples of current single use plastic reduction ordinances in the state of California, ending up writing the draft proposal in the fall of 2018. Juli and her campaign team have documented the dangers of plastic and Styrofoam and during 2019 presented the draft to all 7 of the city of Ventura councilmembers individually to answer any questions and to discuss how to move forward in the most favorable way. To date, 7000 petition postcards have been signed by community members and 70 food establishments have signed a letter of support for the ordinance. The City of Ventura’s draft EPS foam ban ordinance is the first model in Ventura County.

The original single use plastic ban ordinance the PFV campaign drafted was strict. It went from a full single use plastic reduction ordinance to an eps ban ordinance in the hopes that this first ordinance would pass easier and pave the way for the full ban, as well as a more aggressive EPS foam ban that would include retail stores.

Juli welcomes interest from other cities and hopes Ventura County cities like Oxnard, Pt. Hueneme and Camarillo walk beside Ventura and adopt their own ordinances. Please contact her if your city is interested at [email protected].

All of the members of the PFV campaign are like-minded, working together for a common goal and purpose. They are Juli Marciel, Danielle Rose, Cole McLaughlin, Bill Hickman, Kathy Bremmer, Scott Fish, Andrew Fish, Tatum Luoma and John Stith. Many other volunteers also contributed to get to this point. The research was done, the community support was documented, and this is a great step within the city for environmental change.

Vol. 13, No. 12 – Mar 11 – Mar 24, 2020 – Ventura Music Scene

by Pam Baumgardner

It’s not always easy to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day when it falls mid-week as it does this year on a Tuesday, so a lot of the celebrations will take place the weekend before with hardcore Irish venues such as Dargan’s celebrating full throttle on Tuesday anyways. You can expect the obligatory bagpipers and Claddagh Irish dancers throughout the day; I also hear the Ventura City Fire Pipes and Drums will be making their rounds including at stop at Made West Brewing.

Surge Du Monde plays the Red Cove on Saturday, March 14. The band’s genre is “Deep Groove – Old Country – Folk Core” with Austin Wrinkle on drums and percussion (nominated two years for World Percussionist of the Year, Drum! Magazine Drummies Awards), Orest Balaban who toured with the Eels back in the day and Eric Warner who recorded with Jon Swift. Casual Business also plays. The following weekend, Saturday, March 21, Blues Bullet will be joined by Whiskey Dick (Texas), James Hunnicutt (Washington) and the Hajj (Cypress Island).

There will be a hardcore night of Psychobilly/Rawkabilly/Ska with Los Pistoleros out of Reno, Mama’s Hot Sauce out of Palmdale along with locals Double Wide at the Garage on Saturday, March 14.

The Majestic Ventura Theater has a number of concerts over the next couple of weeks including Fitz and the Tantrums on Friday, March 13, the Growlers on Wednesday, March 18, Yachtley Crew on Friday, March 20, and then a tribute to Bob Marley with One Drop Redemption, BombaFiya and After the Smoke on Saturday, March 21.

Quick Notes: VenturaRocks.com celebrates its 11th anniversary this month serving Ventura’s music community; Buffalo Trance plays the Saloon on Friday, March 13; Social Distortion tribute band, Sick Boy, returns to the Sewer with the Hell Toupees on Friday, March 13; you can dance all night to tech music at the Ventura Beach Club with Club805 on Friday, March 13; mPhaka will be the Winery of Ventura’s band both for their float during the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and then again that evening at their venue on Market Street; the Channel Cities Jazz Club presents the Barrelhouse Wailers at the House of Dance on Sunday, March 15; Karyn805 releases her second CD at Winchesters on Friday, March 20; and the Copa Cubana will feature a night of salsa dancing and more when Cuban born Fermin Siforntes Quartet plays on Friday, March 20

So far, no events locally have been cancelled or postposed due to the Coronavirus. I’ve seen concerned raised on social media regarding the Skull & Roses event at the Ventura Fairgrounds over the weekend of April 2 where over a dozen bands play celebrating the music and community of the Grateful Dead. So far everything is a go, but keep your often-washed fingers crossed!

A Ventura hoops hero

John excels at teaching the game without yelling or molding robotic players.

by Tom Marshall (originally published on parentdugout.com)

The day to day heroes in our society are volunteers who make things happen. They step up and coach our children in youth sports. John Cardoza is a volunteer superhero.

I met John Cardoza in late 2019. My son attends Anacapa Middle School and was excited to finish his middle school basketball career playing alongside his friends. The team and the school had a big problem, no coach. One of the players on the team had played on a Cardoza-coached VYBA team. That player’s mom reached out to John about the vacancy and he accepted the volunteer position late in the process. There wasn’t much time to prepare.

My son was hesitant about his new coach at first. After a couple of practices he said, “Our coach is good, he knows what he’s doing.” Not exactly a rave review but if you live with a 13-year-old boy you know that is about 8 more words than they usually utter as they arrive home. The Anacapa team played hard for Coach Cardoza and had fun all season.

Coach Cardoza guided the Anacapa Boys basketball team to a winning record and into the playoffs in his first year at the middle school level. The team was almost always outmanned and wasn’t the most athletic team most games but their effort and will to win was never in question. They were well coached and played hard.

33 years is a career. 33 years of volunteering while practicing law and raising two boys is a rich and full life. John Cardoza has been involved with the Ventura Youth Basketball Association for over 30 years. Today his volunteered time with VYBA is spent on the advisory board but he coached for the bulk of the last 3 decades. John’s youth basketball coaching career began during a normal workday. “A co-worker’s son’s VYBA team didn’t have a coach. She was literally crying about it so 3 of us in the office volunteered to coach the team. That was 33 years ago.” John is married with two grown sons. His wife, Allison, has always been supportive of his involvement with coaching. “She keeps me grounded when I need it.”

John excels at teaching the game without yelling or molding robotic players. His players are disciplined yet are trusted with a healthy level of in-game creativity and freedom. I witnessed a team who enjoyed playing with each other and performed at a high level. The team liked and respected their coach and wanted to win as much for him as themselves.

John Cardoza’s will to win and the desire to improve as a coach and mentor are still present after over 30 years of coaching. Volunteering takes on many shapes. Coaching youths for 33 years in our town has set a positive example for multiple generations to follow and has allowed parents, grandparents, and children to focus on enjoying each other and the game of basketball. His VYBA roots and ideals run deep. That’s where this 33-year run began but it really doesn’t matter where or what age he is coaching. John Cardoza is a volunteer hero and continues to be a solid example for our children to follow.

Opinion:

Who wrote the Scientology front page story? Let me guess: Scientology.

The use of “never-ending “ to describe a swell of expansion would be better used to describe a never-ending swell of controversy.

And the balloons apology to the city of Ventura is just the first local example.

Tracy Lehr

Breeze:

I thought Ventura had strict signage dimensions downtown and in the Victoria corridor to keep our community tasteful. Now there is a gigantic structure going up by the auto mall that looks like an airport radar installation!  It may belong in LA, but Ventura?  How did that get past all the people who are supposed to care about aesthetics?

Cheryl Garrison

Cheryl:
Was controversial when submitted but it was approved by city departments that govern sign designs.

Breeze:

I hope no one thinks that Barack Obama is endorsing Michael Bloomberg.  As a media mogul he is using footage of Obama in his commercials.  Barack Obama has not endorsed anyone yet, and does not plan to until much later.

Thank you,

March 28: Spring Migration Bird Walk along the Santa Clara River hosted by the Nature Conservancy 9-11a.m.  Join naturalist Amy Davis to discover a Nature Conservancy property along Santa Clara River corridor and the life that thrives there. Many birds use the river for a reprieve during migrations. We’ll look for raptors, wading birds and the endangered Bell’s Vireo and Least Flycatcher. Since this area is not open to the public, this is a great way to discover one of the largest watersheds in Southern California.  Wear durable hiking shoes, layers and bring water. The walk is roughly 1 1/2- 2 miles. Binoculars suggested.  1368 Mission rock Rd. Santa Paula, CA.  Meet at the end of Mission Rock Road.  For questions, contact Amy at [email protected] or 770-853-4715.
