King Tide coastal walk

Ventura announces coastal walk during highest high tide

Community members are invited to join the City of Ventura for a walk along the promenade to learn about tides and how sea level rise is impacting our local coastline during the king tide. The walk will take place on Saturday, January 11 from 9 am to 10 am. Please meet at Promenade Park along the Ventura Promenade at the end of Figueroa Street and Shoreline Drive.

The term king tide is used to describe an especially high tide event, when there is alignment of the gravitational pull between the sun and moon. When king tides occur during floods or storms, water levels can rise higher and have the potential to cause great damage to the coastline and coastal property. King tides are expected along the Ventura coast on the following dates and times: January 10, 8:18 am, January 11, 9:00 am, January 12, 9:43 am, February 8, 8:10 am, and February 9, 8:52 am.

Can’t catch the walk but want to learn more? California State Parks will be hosting a Facebook Live broadcast of the king tide along the California Coast from San Diego to Mendocino. Tune in on January 10 from 10 am to 11 am at www.facebook.com/CaliforniaStateParks/. Questions? Call 805-339-4317.

Vol. 13, No. 7 – Jan 1 – Jan 14, 2020 – Police Reports

by Cindy Summers

Police reports are provided to us by the Ventura  Police Department and are not the opinions of  the Ventura Breeze. All suspects mentioned  are assumed to be innocent until proven guilty  in a court of law.

Grand Theft Arrest

On July 15, the owner of Hat’s Unlimited contacted the Ventura Police Department reference their bookkeeper, 40 year old Ventura residen Andrea Galindo, who had been fraudulently cashing company checks for the past year. Her primary duties for the company was to manage the company’s finances and bills. During a company audit, they noticed significant discrepancies in their billing process and realized that Galindo was cashing checks without their permission.

The Ventura Police Street Crimes Unit began a financial investigation, and it was discovered that Galindo had embezzled over $50,000 from Hat’s Unlimited and had also fraudulently paid herself for vacation time.

On December 16, Galindo was arrested and booked at the Ventura County Jail for grand theft.

Residential Burglary and Stolen Vehicle Arrest

On November 4, at approximately 11am, the victim reported a residential burglary and a theft of two of their vehicles, a pickup truck and a motorcycle. Ventura Police Patrol officers located the stolen motorcycle and contacted the Ventura Police Street Crimes Unit VenCATT liaison to begin an investigation. On November 5, KernCATT found the stolen pickup truck outside the city of Bakersfield.

During the investigation, detectives identified the suspect, 47 year old Bakersfield resident Aaron McIntosh, as the person who entered the residence and stole the vehicles. On December 17, detectives from SCU, VenCATT and KernCATT located McIntosh in Bakersfield. They requested the assistance of a CHP K9 unit to help take McIntosh into custody.

McIntosh was arrested and transported to the Ventura County Jail where he was booked for residential burglary and possession of a stolen vehicle. A review of the Ventura County Superior Court website shows that McIntosh has been convicted of possession of a stolen vehicle and participation in a criminal street gang.

Robbery Arrest

On December 5 at 9:45pm, VPD Patrol units responded to De Anza Middle School in reference to an armed robbery that had just occurred. Upon arrival, officers spoke with (2) victims who told them they were sitting on a bench in the quad area of the school when the suspect approached them, brandished a firearm and demanded their property. The suspect then fled the area with the victim’s property. Officers canvassed the area but were unable to locate the suspect.

VPD Detectives later identified the suspect as 19 year old Ventura resident Adrian Riggs. On December 18 at 10:15am, Riggs was taken into custody in the area of Seaward Ave and Harbor Blvd. Detectives executed search warrants in the 100 block of James Dr. and the 70 block of Franklin Ln. Detectives recovered evidence related to the robbery.

Riggs was booked at Ventura County Jail for Robbery. This investigation is on-going; anyone with information is asked to call Det. Reginato at 805-339-4466.

Felony Animal Abuse

On December 24, at approximately 12:30pm, the Ventura Police Department Command Center received a 911 call from a Gold Coast Transit bus driver reporting a male subject beating a dog with a lock near the Bus Depot in the 3300 block of Telegraph Rd. It was also reported several passersby confronted the subject, later identified as 26 year old vagrant Ezekiel Heterwegscheider, who then left the area on foot. Officers responded and located Heterwegscheider at a gas station near the intersection of Telegraph Rd. and Mills Rd.

During the investigation officers found several witnesses who saw Heterwegscheider attacking and hitting his dog, a mixed breed puppy, with a large master lock that was attached to a rope. He left with the dog when confronted by others waiting at the bus depot.

Heterwegscheider was arrested for felony animal cruelty. Officers with Ventura County Animal Services responded and took custody of the dog. The dog will be evaluated for injuries.

Train vs Vehicle Traffic Collision

On December 27, at approximately 7pm, the Ventura Police Command Center received multiple 911 calls of a train versus a vehicle collision. As officers arrived at the scene and started to investigate, they learned that the 79-year-old driver of the vehicle was driving south on California and had stopped on the railroad tracks when he became confused as the railroad crossing lights came on, and the crossing arms came down.

The Union Pacific freight train was traveling east on the tracks. The engineer attempted to stop the train, however, he was unable to stop it in time, and it collided with the vehicle on the passenger side front corner panel. There were four occupants inside the car during the collision. All four were taken to local hospitals to be checked out. One of the four occupants, a 37-year-old male, suffered major injuries during the collision. His status is unknown at this time. No one on the train was injured.

It does not appear as if drugs or alcohol were involved in the incident. This is an ongoing investigation and anyone who may have witnessed the collision is asked to call the Ventura Police Traffic Investigation Unit at 805-339-4451.

Activities for All Seasons: Fun Ideas for Being Active All Year

” I didn’t know riding a bike could be so much fun while staying active?”

by the National Institute on Aging

Being creative about your physical activity plans and trying new forms of exercise can keep you motivated by preventing boredom. A change in seasons is an excellent time to be creative about your exercise routine and try something new. There are many ways to be active throughout the year.

Grandfather and granddaughter in garden

If you have holiday shopping to do, walk the entire mall each time you’re there.

Cold outdoor temperatures are an excellent reason to join a mall-walking group.

Start the new year by trying out a fitness center—many offer New Year’s Resolution specials.

As the weather begins to cool, join an indoor sports league, such as basketball, handball, or bowling.

Give your heart a Valentine’s Day gift with dance lessons, such as salsa, tango, or belly dancing.

As the temperatures start to get warm, get your garden ready for spring and summer. The lifting and bending you do when gardening are great for strength and flexibility.

A bike ride is a great way to enjoy the warmer temperatures.

Build your endurance and strength with a bike ride during National Bike Month (May). Remember your helmet.

Swim laps or take a water aerobics class. These are both refreshing once the weather gets steamy.

Walking in the mall is a cool way to beat the heat.

If you’ve heard about the benefits of yoga but haven’t tried it yet find special events and trial classes for beginners.

Fall provides great opportunities for physical activity. You can take long walks to see the beautiful fall colors. Once the leaves have fallen, raking is good exercise.

Alzheimer’s Association® to host community forum on Alzheimer’s research

With such an exciting year for dementia research behind us – and with 2020 promising to be even more thrilling – the Alzheimer’s Association is hosting a Community Research Forum for residents of the City of Ventura. The forum will be held at the NAMBA Performing Arts Space in Downtown Ventura on January 31st at 1PM. The Alzheimer’s Association is offering this free forum as a way to wrap-up all the advances that have been made in the last year, including:

  • A healthy lifestyle may counteract genetic risk for dementia.
  • An Alzheimer’s blood test may be on the horizon.
  • Alzheimer’s risk and progression differs by sex.
  • Vision and hearing loss might increase dementia risk – especially when combined.
  • New possible treatments and drug targets for Alzheimer’s disease.

The Alzheimer’s Association California Central Coast Chapter Research Champion, Donna Beal, will discuss the landscape of Alzheimer’s and dementia science; the latest advances in clinical trials, treatments, and lifestyle interventions; and updates on the work being done locally, including new education and support group opportunities.

The Alzheimer’s Association is the premier source of information and support for the five million Americans with Alzheimer’s disease. Through its national network of chapters, it offers a broad range of programs and services for people with the disease, their families and caregivers and represents their interests on Alzheimer’s-related issues before federal, state and local government and with health and long-term care providers.
