Harbor Patrol Blotter

Monday 12/23

4:55am, received request for an escort into the harbor from the #2 buoy, one of the fishing fleet seiners and lightboat concerned about the large surf. Officers responded in Harborwatch to assist with safe passage back into harbor.

5:41am, observed NOAA is Small Craft Advisory, raised warning pennant.

8:58am, dispatched to a surfer in distress at Oxnard shores. Officers responded in Fireboat to assist with the call. After arriving, the surfer was assisted to shore.

4:45pm, received report of a small vessel engaged in hoop netting at the North end of the breakwall with breaking waves nearby. Officers responded, contacted the skipper with his two young children and wife onboard. Convinced the skipper to quit and come back when conditions are safer for fishing.

Tuesday 12/24

5:53am, observed NOAA issued Small Craft advisory 4 dangerous winds/waves.

10:45am, observed a surfer in the harbor entrance attempting to ride waves breaking across the entrance. Officers escorted the surfer back into the keys.

11:33pm, assisting Ventura PD with a call at Surfers Knoll and PBYC r/r’s.

Wednesday 12/25

12:14am, dispatched to chest pain at VWM A-dock. Officers responded with AMR/VFD to assist with assessment and entry to the marina.

3:12pm, received report of a large commercial purse seiner unsecured and moving significantly with the surge. Officers responded and found the vessel was secured securely and moving normally with the surges from large swell.

Thursday 12/26

6:43am, observed NOAA issued Small Craft Advisory for winds and waves.

9:20am, safety contact of a small skiff with 3 persons onboard. Loaned the group a lifejacket and advised of the hazardous conditions and to stay in harbor.

2:02pm, conducting a safety contact of a group attempting to head out in a very small vessel. Officers advising of the strong currents at the entrance and the extremely large swell with breaking waves everywhere. Group stayed in harbor.

11:49pm, dispatched to a medical at VIM parking lot. Officers responded with AMR/VFD and Ventura PD to assist with assessment and treatment.

Friday 12/27

6:03am, again observed several advisories posted by NOAA for weather issues.

6:50am, while on patrol in truck, observing severe coastal sand erosion at harbor beaches. Contacting beach combers and advising of dangerous areas.

Saturday 12/28

8:53am, dispatched to difficulty breathing in Ventura Marina Community. Officers responded with VFD/AMR to assist with patient assessment/treatment.

12:01pm, officers training new officers on safely exiting/returning to harbor in large swell events and hazardous conditions outside the harbor.

Sunday 12/29

12:30pm, received a 911 CHP transfer call of a person in distress, surfing with a “JetPack” on, has disappeared, feared drowned. The call was from an individual parked at Neptune’s Net. Advised to contact closer responding agencies to assist.

6:05pm, received report of a lost engagement ring, fell in between the planks of the Ventura Pier. Advised conditions and no proper retrieval process except to file lost report to VPD in the hopes that someone finds it on the beach.
