Community members are invited to join the City of Ventura and local environmental partners to observe the King Tides event at the Ventura Promenade on Monday, January 13, 2025, starting at 9:00 a.m. This engaging and educational event highlights the extraordinary natural phenomenon of King Tides when the alignment of the sun and moon increases the ocean’s gravitational pull. This event also explores how rising sealevels could impact our local coastline.
“The high surf and King Tides are a striking reminder of how powerful and dynamic our ocean is,” shared Mayor Dr.Jeannette Sanchez-Palacios. “This year’s event offers a hands-on opportunity for residents and students to witness these forces of nature while learning about the innovative steps our community is taking to protect our coastlines.”
Event Details:
• Date: Monday, January 13, 2025
• Time: 9:00 am – 11:00 am
• Location: Ventura Promenade, Ventura 750 E Harbor Blvd, Ventura, CA 93001 (right below the pier, parking free of charge for the event on the E. Harbor Blvd parking structure).
The King Tides event features a variety of interactive activities:
• Coastal talks: City teams will discuss ocean health programs, hazardous waste management, water quality, and sea level rise adaptation efforts.
• Educational booths: Learn about City initiatives and the work partnering nonprofits that promote ocean health and coastal resilience.
• Pledge to protect our oceans.
• Interactive demonstrations: Explore how tides shape our coastline and discover steps to reduce your environmental impact.
• Photo opportunities: Capture the beauty and significance of the King Tides in action!
“These high tide events remind us of our coastline’s vulnerability and the importance of working together to protect our beaches,” shared Public Works Director Charlie Ebeling. “Through partnerships with local nonprofits the City continues to address the challenges of coastal erosion and climate adaptation.”
King Tides are exceptionally high tides that occur when the sun and moon align to create a powerful gravitational pull. When combined with storms or heavy surf, these tides can lead to coastal flooding and erosion, underscoring the importance of sustainable coastal management.
