Harbor Blotter

Monday 1/5

2:01pm, observed a sailboat in the timeshare docks sitting low in the water.  Officers investigated, found possible petroleum in the bilge.  Advised owners of marina, they contacted the owner.

8:50pm, received report of a vessel appearing in distress according to the reporting party.  The caller was concerned that the vessel had bright lights on.  After brief investigation, ascertained that the vessel was a fishing boat with deck lights on heading towards Santa Barbara, where most of the trawlers go to fish.

Tuesday 1/6

9:00am, observed a small skiff disabled in the harbor entrance.  Officers responded in Rescue Boat 19, towed the vessel to the launch ramp.

10:45am, officers returning shoal buoy and #14 navigation buoy back on station in the “stub-channel” entrance to the barranca in the keys.

3:50pm, observed a 14ft skiff in violation of speed/wake ordinance in the Pierpont bay.  Officers responded in Rescue Boat 19, contacted, issued warning.

Wednesday 1/7

10:27am, received report of a missing person, Standup paddleboarder.  Officers beginning search in Rescue B19.  After 1hr of searching, found the missing Standup Paddler in the harbor safe and unaware of being reported missing.

2:50pm, report of boat fire outside the breakwall.  Officers responded in the Fireboat, found a motor vessel with a cracked radiator cap, crew member standing on the cap.  Convinced skipper to turn off engine, towed to L/R.

Thursday 1/8

11:51am, dispatched to Ocean Rescue, capsized vessel, one person in the water. Officers responded in Fireboat and Rescue Boat 19 to Solimar beach.  Experiencing very rough conditions from 20kts of wind and short period swell. Once on scene, US coast guard helicopter also on scene searching.  Received a call from an individual who was in the area earlier conducting a downwind kite surfing journey from Faria.  He was contacted by the reporting party, told him he was not in distress and making his way to shore at Emma Wood.

3:32pm, dispatched to an Ocean Rescue, kite surfer down outside the Ventura Pier.  Officers responded in Rescue Boat 19 to assist.  Kite surfer was able to “self-rescue” and make it safely to the beach while officers escorted.

Friday 1/9

11:02am, received request for dewatering a vessel at the launch ramp so they could retrieve the vessel onto a trailer.  Officers were able to dewater the vessel.

12:55pm, observed a white hydrofoil power boat operating at 20kts in the main channel of the harbor.  Officers contacted the skipper at VIM F-dock and issued stern warning.  Skipper advised he, “talked to our boss and he said it was cool.” Advised there is no way anyone would allow that type of reckless operation.

Saturday 1/10

7:53am, observed NOAA issued a Small Craft Advisory for 30kts of East wind.

3:45pm, received report of a dinghy operating recklessly around the pier and surfers.  Officers on patrol in Rescue B19 contacted skipper, educated on rules.

Sunday 1/11

1:32am, dispatched to unconscious person in a vehicle at Portside.  Officers responded and were able to wake the individual, no medical component.

11:30pm, officers monitoring Greek “Epiphany” ceremony at VHV D-dock.

Monday 1/12

5:12am, observed NOAA issued a Small Craft Advisory for Northeast winds, raised warning pennant at the Ventura Port District.

8:45pm, received a request for fuel or a tow from the skipper of an inflatable near the patrol dock.  Found a crew of 3 with no safety equipment or fuel.  Took the dinghy en tow and crew aboard Fireboat to their vessel “Erasmus.” Stated that the Praise-of-Folly was a great book.  He looked at me sideways, skipper believed they have great luck because their beat-up sailboat is named, Erasmus, a Greek God. The crew were from Monterey, en route to a small mooring, Marina Del Ray, looking for cheap accommodations for their 50ft sailboat.

Tuesday 1/13

7:15am, dispatched to traumatic injury at McGrath State Beach.  Officers responded with VFD/AMR to assist with patient treatment and assessment.

9:00am, conducting a tryout swim for Marina Safety Officers in Pierpont Basin.

8:10pm, while on patrol in the truck, observed a large bonfire on top of the wood/arundo pile from Surfers Knoll jetty to South Jetty.  Officers extinguished the fire mound on the beginning of the SK jetty.  It could of started a huge fire.

Wednesday 1/14

7:46am, while on patrol in the vehicle, observed last nights bonfire.  Officers extinguishing coals still simmering at Surfers Knoll Jetty, confirming its out.

4:34pm, while on patrol in Rescue Boat 19, dispatched to Ocean Rescue, unconscious surfer at Surfers Point.  Officers were in the area, deployed a rescue swimmer to assist with the call.  Unfortunately all resuscitation efforts failed.

Thursday 1/15

12:30am, officers witnessed NASA astronauts returning to Earth from office.

11:50am, received “Mayday” call, vessel on the rocks outside breakwall VHF16.  Officers responded with Tow Boat US to assist a 30ft sailboat off the rocks.

Friday 1/16

9:00am, officers conducting Marine Safety Officer tryout swim for new officers.

11:20am, observed a Hazard-to-Navigation, 15ft log in the main entrance of the harbor.  Officers towed the log downcoast past the Santa Clara Rivermouth.

2:20pm, while on patrol in truck, observed a injured surfer walking on the beach.  Officers assessed and treated the patient for a dislocated shoulder.  Patient was transported to vehicle in Harbor Cove, but refused any further medical aid.

Saturday 1/17

8:02am, dispatched to fall patient in the Ventura Marina Community.  Officers responded with AMR/VFD to assist with patient treatment and assessment.

12:00pm, dispatched to an Ocean Rescue, swimmer caught in a rip current at Surfers Knoll.  Officers responded by Harborwatch vessel and vehicle.  Rescue swimmer deployed from vehicle, was able to safely swim victim to shore.

9:19pm, while on patrol in Fireboat, officers contacted a fisherman with no navigation lights and hoop nets in the entrance.  Educated about ordinances.

Sunday 1/18

5:45pm, while on patrol in Fireboat, observed a 14ft electric boat in the surfline near Marina Park.  Officers attempted to assist, but the vessel was in 2ft of water with breaking waves.  A rescue swimmer was deployed to assist the 2 persons onboard and Rescue Boat19 responded also.  Towline was passed 50ft to the swimmer and the vessel was towed to safety out of the surfline.
