Father Tom Elewaut Reflects on Mission Legacy

By Patricia Schallert

After 15 years at Mission Basilica San Buenaventura, Father Thomas Elewaut is preparing to transition into the role of pastor emeritus, reflecting on a tenure defined by pastoral leadership, community outreach and efforts to preserve the Mission’s history and identity.

Elewaut has served as pastor, guiding parishioners in matters of faith, education and spiritual growth while overseeing daily operations at the historic Mission. He also helped lead programs focused on scripture, doctrine and Catholic teaching, and provided pastoral care through counseling, hospital visits and support for the homebound.

Spiritual care, he said, is deeply personal.

“I believe in being approachable, understanding, and relating to the life experiences of each person I interact with,” Elewaut said.

During his tenure, Elewaut expanded community engagement efforts, including events in the Mission gardens that supported charitable causes, along with outreach programs serving those in need. He also encouraged parish involvement in ministries and volunteer work and was frequently seen participating in local community events.

He also worked to strengthen relationships with other faith communities and supported collaborative service projects across Ventura.

“Joining in events, dialogues, and service projects emphasizes the importance of coming together to help those in need,” said local resident Jerry Cranham.

A major milestone during his leadership was the elevation of Mission San Buenaventura to basilica status in 2020, a designation granted after a multi-year process involving approval from church leadership.

Elewaut also supported social service efforts through Catholic Charities programs, including meal distribution, shelter support during severe weather and community assistance initiatives.

As he steps into retirement, Elewaut said he plans to remain involved in ministry in a reduced capacity, including mentoring and supporting parish initiatives.

He will hold the title of pastor emeritus, remaining a presence at the Mission without active administrative duties. He will also continue work related to historic education and community programming.

Fr. Maurice Harrigan will become the new pastor of Mission Basilica San Buenaventura on July 1. Harrigan previously served in Southern California parishes and has experience in church history and military chaplaincy work, including with the U.S. Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton.
