The Earth Organization launches its Cooperative Ecology® program to help youth rediscover respect, empathy, and environmental responsibility amid rising classroom behavior challenges.
As schools across America report increasing disrespect and disconnection among students, The Earth Organization, co-founded by humanitarian Barbara Wiseman and the late Dr. Lawrence Anthony, known as “The Elephant Whisperer” for his legendary relationship with a herd of wild elephants, is taking action with a powerful new educational initiative: the Cooperative Ecology (CoEco®) Education Program and Contest.
Built on Anthony’s enduring message that “None Survive Alone,” CoEco helps students ages 6–18 reconnect with themselves and others and better understand the effect they have on the environment around them through interactive books, reflection exercises, and real-world lessons.
From Saving Zoos in War Zones to Saving Empathy in Classrooms
Lawrence Anthony became an international hero during the Iraq War when he entered Baghdad in 2003 to rescue starving and abandoned animals from the city’s zoo, a mission chronicled in his bestselling book Babylon’s Ark. His lifelong dedication to restoring harmony between people and wildlife inspired the founding of The Earth Organization and its guiding principle of interdependence.
Restoring Respect, Accountability, and Connection
Educators nationwide have expressed growing concern over disrespectful and disengaged classroom behavior. The CoEco program addresses this problem at its roots, guiding students to observe how their actions affect family, teachers, and community, and to practice choices that strengthen those relationships. In describing the program, Wiseman stated “A successful life is only brought about by actively enhancing the life and things around one and having an awareness that, by so doing, it strengthens one’s own potential for long-term health, happiness, and financial viability. And this extends out to every part of one’s life, including family, school, community and nature.”
Teachers using the program report improved student focus, communication, and kindness. One student shared, “Before this, I didn’t realize how my actions affected others. Now I think before I speak, and my teachers actually smile at me again.”
CoEco Contest
To celebrate students who embody Cooperative Ecology in their daily lives, TEO has launched the CoEco Contest across Kern County, California. Contestants who complete the CoEco workbook can submit an essay describing how the lessons changed their perspective. Eight grand-prize winners will be selected in 2026 for an unforgettable safari experience, featuring guided wildlife tours, conservation workshops, and youth leadership seminars at an African wildlife sanctuary in Napa Valley, CA.
Global Reach and Lasting Impact
CoEco is already being introduced in schools across the U.S., Africa, India, and many other countries. Its curriculum integrates seamlessly into science, civics, and social-emotional learning programs, offering educators a practical, uplifting way to rebuild empathy and responsibility in today’s youth.
