A benefit for Notes for Notes™

A benefit for Notes for Notes™ (N4N™) – Music Making for our Youth – this coming Friday at the Squashed Grapes:

Support a remarkable organization that brings music making to youth: Notes for Notes™ (N4N™) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that designs, equips, and staffs after-school recording studios inside Boys & Girls Clubs offering youth the opportunity to explore, create, and record music for FREE. N4N Studios are packed with professional instruments – guitars, basses, drums, keyboards/synths – and equipment – DJ gear, digital music workstations – and full recording facilities. Beyond providing access to equipment and resources, N4N educates youth about careers both on the stage and behind the scenes and is expanding throughout the country.

And we now have a Notes for Notes studio right here in Ventura as we continue to position ourselves in the forefront of music making! As they have done for years now – Adam Randall and Josh McNutt at the Squashed Grapes are making it happen. This time it’s partnering with Notes for Notes to bring this concept to Ventura and making a Notes for Notes studio a reality here.

So, join us at the Squashed Grapes for a benefit ($20 cover and more if you feel moved to do so) for a fun evening of good music to support this marvelous cause: It’s  Friday, August 25 at 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. Music by Jazz Villains and Hans Ottsen Quartet.

4H youth affected by Tetrasomy 18p brings market goat to auction

Her summer memories will include her exciting day at the Ventura County Fair. Photo by Amanda Peacock

Amelia Gallardo is a special child. She has a rare chromosome 18 abnormality known as Tetrasomy 18p, born with 47 chromosomes instead of 46, which is the typical number. The 14 year old, about to enter Moorpark High School, raised a market goat with Somis 4H for the Ventura County Fair.

Her summer memories will include her exciting day at the Ventura County Fair Junior Livestock Auction, where her market goat brought in $31,000 dollars at auction. The money raised is all earmarked for the Chromosome A Team Registry and Research Society where it will be used for research into this rare chromosome 18 abnormality that affects families worldwide.

The auction buyers, a consortium of community members and local businesses, bid on the goat in a show of support for Amelia and to help her raise awareness for the rare chromosome 18 abnormality.

“I’m proud of Amelia for her accomplishments, and I am thankful to the people who have chipped in to help support the research that will lead to better lives for people affected by Tetrasomy 18p,” said Amelia’s mother, Stacey Gallardo.

People who are affected by Tetrasomy 18p experience neurological changes, seizures, MRI changes, eyes and vision, ear infections, hearing, palatal abnormalities, heart irregularities, gastrointestinal changes, orthopedic changes, allergies and immunology, growth and bone issues.

Barbara Quaid, Ventura County Fair CEO said “The Ventura County Fair is a place where anything is possible! We are proud of Amelia, and the Somis 4H and we are happy to be in a position to bring awareness to this affliction and the research that will bring relief to those afflicted and their families.”

Youth Surfari

Twelve teens ages 12-14 visited Ventura for Mary Osborne’s teen overnight “Surfari”. A six day week of surf, adventure, education, motivational celebrity speakers and friendships. The girls were from San Francisco, Orange County, Valencia, Nevada and other cities.

Mary stated “ After teaching all ages of youth and adult programs, I realized we are lacking a program on our coastline specialized for females teens. I wanted to create a place where teens could not only learn about the ocean and surf, but to also feel safe, overcome fears and just “be” themselves. My Teen Surfari’s programs are an amazing active week of self-discovery, growth, and health.”

Her other favorite subjects are math and science, and Anna is a member of the National Juniors Honors Society. Anna was also honored by the Rotary Club as Student of the Year.
