The Ventura Music Festival’s annual free concert will be held once again at Mission Park with Incendio (high octane Latin guitar) on Thursday, July 18, show starts at 5:30 pm. The festival’s final performances will be held at the Ventura College Performing Arts Center with Joey Alexander Trio on July 19; Ranky Tanky on July 20 and Rastrelli Cello quartet on July 21.

The Ventura Fair opens August 2; this is just a reminder, if you want to take in more than 4 concerts (which are included in the price of admission), you should consider getting a WOW pass before the fair opens which gets you entry everyday saving you beaucoup bucks. See full lineup and ticket information at VenturaCountyFair.org.

Just a head’s up, Spencer Makenzie’s Annual End of Summer Block Party falls over the weekend of August 23 – 25. Don’t miss their free concert which will fall on Saturday with Johnny and the Love Handles, Dave Rae and Madex.

I am loving all the local punk bands supporting T.S.O.L. at the Ventura Theater on Friday, July 26; just a few of the bands include Stalag 13, Ill Repute, The Grim, and The Robot Uprising.

Tequila and Taco Music Festival returns to town over the weekend of July 20 and 21 at Plaza Park with Bruno and the Hooligans, a tribute to Bruno Mars, along with Instone, Sambada, Adelaide and Upstream. Find out more at TequilaAndTacoMusicFestival.com.

Music Under the Stars series continues on Saturday nights at Olivas Adobe with Sound Effect (sold out) on July 20 and Rodeo Drive on July 27. Know this, all final shows for the rest of the summer are sold out.

Quick Notes: Munch at the Museum this month features Sandi Ellen Anderson on Thursday, July 18 (11:30 am – 1:30 pm); Pyrate Punx has a show at Hong Kong Inn with False Confession, 3 Day Holocaust, Civil Conflict and Trash on Thursday, July 18; Alpine Camp Band plays Leashless Brewing’s Vtown Get Down Festival on Saturday, July 20; Bad Religion sold out for their show at Ventura Theater on Friday, July 19; Ventura’s Psychedelic Summer debuts at Oak and Main on Friday, July 19 (dress up!); Jen Staves returns to Ventura with her Bluzfish Trio on Sunday, July 21 at Plan B Wine Cellers; Actor Jeff Bridges performs his music at Discovery on Wednesday, July 24; The Garage welcomes Tanglers out of Vancouver on Friday, July 26; And the Caverns return to town with a show at Saloon on Friday, July 26.

Many thanks to JD Drury and his crew for pulling off another amazing Surf Rodeo. Of course, I miss them at Pierpont Beach where I could park at home and walk over, but loving the vibe at the Pier.

Vol. 12, No. 20 – July 3 – July 16, 2019 – Ventura Music Scene

by Pam Baumgardner
VenturaRocks.com

The summer event of the year is finally upon us with Surf Rodeo taking over the beach on the southside of the Ventura Pier. The weekend of July 13 and 14 will be chock-full of music both days on two stages with The Expendables headlining on Saturday, and Hepcat on Sunday. For a full rundown of over 30 bands and to secure your tickets, go to SurfRodeo.org.

Congratulations to Leashless Brewing as they celebrate their 2nd anniversary on Saturday, July 6 with live music from Bombafiya at 3 pm followed by Shaky Feelin’ at 6. Be sure to stop in for a cool one, especially if you’ve never tried their beer which is certified organic.

The band, Psychedelic Summer, will make their Woodstock-era tribute debut at Oak and Main on Friday, July 19. You’re invited to dress up in your best 60s garb (yes there will be costume contest) while listening to Joplin, Hendrix, The Doors, Sly Stone and more!

The 4th of July Street Fair will offer live music with the Colette Lovejoy Band, Midnight Ride and Rhythm 805 on the California Street Stage, then it’s Johnny & the Love Handles, Jukebox Rockers and Vendo 81 on the Palm Street Stage. The music runs 10 am to 5 pm.

One of the best tribute bands on the planet plays Thursday, July 11, and it’s absolutely free! Don’t miss Queen Nation 6:30 – 8 pm at The Collection in Oxnard.

Quick Notes: Shaky Feelin’ will make their debut at the Ventura Theater opening for Galactic on Wednesday, July 3; Shay Moulder plays Harvest Café for First Friday, July 5; the Ventura Bike Hub has with Psycoticsum, Malice Thoughts, Fun Abuse and Boy/Girl on July 5; Schwab Academy of Music continues their free concerts over the weekend at the Ventura College Performing Arts Center; Concrete Jungle hosts a Psycho Billy Night on July 6 with Cursed Bastards and Caroshi from the San Fernando Valley; it’s Hot Harbor Nights with the 805 Allstarz on Sunday, July 7, at the Harbor Cove Café; Gypsy Blues Band takes the week off for the 4th but returns the following Thursday, July 11, with special guest Shawn Jones at the Blue Room in the Ventura Harbor; The Hong Kong Inn will host a techhouse & techno party called ARRIVAL, on Friday, July 12; Music Under the Stars kicks off the 2019 summer season with British Beat on Saturday, July 13; and Plan B’s Second Sunday Supper will offer up Ray Jaurique & the Uptown Brothers for your musical entertainment.

Ventura Music Festival will re-schedule their 25th anniversary overview this fall; but the regularly scheduled festival is going as planned with concerts running July 11 through July 21 at various locations. See VenturaMusicFestival.org for more information.

Vol. 12, No. 19 – June 19 – July 2, 2019 – Ventura Music Scene

by Pam Baumgardner
VenturaRocks.com

Gearing up for the 2019 Ventura Music Festival (VMF) season, Artistic Director, Nuvi Mehta, will hold a free reception at the Museum of Ventura County on Sunday, June 30. Equipped with violin and video clips, Nuvi will highlight the past 25 years of VMF; donations will be accepted. The official program for this year runs July 11 through July 21. For a full listing of concerts go to VenturaMusicFestival.org.

When last I checked, there were only tickets available for two shows for the Music Under the Stars series this summer: Sound Effect (R&B, soul, pop, funk) for July 20 and Rodeo Drive (country rock) for July 27. All other concerts are sold out; secure your tickets for one or both of the remaining shows by calling the City of Ventura during regular business hours at (805) 658-4728.

There’s a double hitter at Oak and Main on Saturday night, June 22, with Goodnight Kiss and Brothers Fortune; then on Sunday afternoon (noon to 5), June 23, don’t miss the Americana showcase hosted by Medicine Hat, featuring RJ Bloke (Patrolled by Radar), Farm Truck, and Lasers Lasers Birmingham.

Discovery is giving you a chance to be up close and personal with actor and singer/songwriter, Jeff Bridges, when he plays the venue on Wednesday, July 24. Bridges has released a handful of albums over the years and will be performing acoustically as a duo. I can only imagine the backstory on many of his original tunes and the antidotes he’ll share with the audience. Get ticket at DiscoveryVentura.com.

Quick Notes: Congratulations to Jodi Farrell who is celebrating her 25th anniversary since opening the Jodi Farrell Music Studio; reggae returns to Café Fiore on Sunday afternoons in the Tree House Lounge for the summer; Jon Gindick returns with full band to Grapes and Hops for a show on Thursday, June 20; MUNCH returns to the Museum of Ventura County with The Ventura Artists Union Jam Band on Thursday, June 20 (11:30 am – 1:30 pm); the Red Cove has live music on Saturday, June 22, with Zig Zags, Char-Man, Vnlvx and Tung; and Gigi’s has reggae on Tuesday night, June 25, with Herbal Rootz and Ghetto Lions.

And finally, have I mentioned that I’ve been asked to emcee the Topa Mountain Music Fest at Libbey Bowl on Saturday, September 21 this year? Yessiree Bob! Performing this year will be Brett Dennen, Marc Broussard Band, The Mother Hips, Reverend Tall Tree, Bryan Titus Trio with the Brambles, Timmy Curran Band with Lee Koch, Tom Freund, and Quincy Coleman with Shane Alexander. Dude, that is a load of talent performing on one stage. Two charities will benefit this year: Stand for Cancer and the Glioblastoma Foundation. For more information and to get your tickets, go to TopaMountainMusicFest.org.

Vol. 12, No. 18 – June 5 – June 18, 2019 – Ventura Music Scene

by Pam Baumgardner
VenturaRocks.com

If nothing else, Ventura is known as a community that loves to give back; case in point, the Ventura Theater will be hosting a Cystic Fibrosis Fundraiser on Saturday, June 8, with lots of favorite local bands being given the opportunity to play the big stage. The genres range from hard rock to metal with Bone Maggots, The Deveros, The Guitar and Whiskey Club, SixPackofDoom, Samoan Take-Out and Stronger Than Machines. This one is all ages and will be over by 11 pm. Tickets are only $10.00.

The Rubicon Theater has a number of music related events the next couple of weeks. First over the weekend of June 8 and 9 it’s Amanda McBroom performing “Lady Macbeth Sings the Blues” and the following weekend, June 14 – 16, you won’t want to miss the iconic doo-wop sounds of the 50s and 60s with The Drifters and Cornell Gunter’s Coasters playing two shows daily. You can find ticket information at RubiconTheatre.org.

The Hong Kong Inn has live music once again with quite the eclectic mix of genres. They’ll have punk shows on Wednesday, June 5, with Civil Conflict, NNN, Bare Minimum and Operation Oxnard, and then again on Friday, June 7 with How to Live with Robots and Astreyas; then it’s Latin fun with La Imagen Nortena on Saturday June 8, and smooth jazz on Sunday June 9 with Del Franklin.

Quick Notes: there will be a free, all-ages show, at Bank of Books on Saturday, June 8, with Lasso the Moon (Compton), Crawdads and Trypanosome; more punk with All-a-Blur, Plot, F– USE, Birdbrain and One Minute Run at the Red Cove on Saturday, June 8; Plan B Wine Cellars offers Johnny and the Love Handles for your Sunday early evening, June 9 (4:30 – 7 pm); Silver & Gold out of Greeley, Colorado will be making a stop on their tour for a special show at Oak and Main on Monday, June 10, along with Ferriswheels, Blossum and Pretty Well; Dad Brains is holding their album release party at Gigi’s Cocktails on Friday, June 14; the Ventura Harbor Village is once again providing live music over the weekend from 1-4 pm with Surfer Joe on June 15, and Cash Cats on June 16; and finally, good to know that the open jazz jam is gaining some traction on Thursdays at Golden China.

Big news!!! Be sure to listen to episode #84 of The Pam Baumgardner Music Hour on KPPQ-LP at 104.1 FM for the world premiere release of the brand-new Crooked Eye Tommy Album! Episode #84 also includes an interview with Tommy Marsh which airs Tuesdays and Fridays at 5 pm and Sundays at noon for two weeks. You can also listen with the MyTuner app for your phone or online at CapsMedia.org.

Vol. 12, No. 17 – May 22 – June 4, 2019 – Ventura Music Scene

by Pam Baumgardner
VenturaRocks.com.

Surf Rodeo has finally announced their headliners for each day! First, it’s The Expendables (reggae) for Saturday, July 13, and then it’s Hepcat (ska and reggae) for Sunday, July 14. Don’t forget that the two-day surf and music festival lands in a new spot this year at the Ventura Pier. JD Drury has always been a strong supporter of local music, case in point, you can catch loads of local bands including Hy Brasil, Stoneflys, Honey Owl and Kings Revenge along with JD’s Raging Arb and the Redheads. There will be 30+ bands along with surf and cornhole competitions, and cowgirl & cowboy bikini contest…hey wait! A cowboy bikini contest? How did I miss this before??? Get tickets and more information at SurfRodeo.org.

The 4th Annual Ojai Blues Fest at Ojai Art Center will be held on Saturday, June 1, with another amazing lineup of blues artists. The doors open at 1 pm with music from Kelly’s Lot, Orphan Jon and the Abandoned, Crooked Eye Tommy, Rae Gordon, Laurie Morvan Band, then a grand finale set featuring an all-star jam. Acoustic sets will be played in between to keep the day moving; tickets available online at OjaiBluesFest.com

Tickets for the Music Under the Stars concert series this summer are available only through Ventura City Hall. Several shows have already sold out, but you can still get tickets for Sound Effect on July 20, Rodeo Drive on July 27, Four Lads from Liverpool on August 3 and Identity Theft on August 10. I’m happy to see people are scooping up tickets, but it’s a little baffling why the City doesn’t set up an online page to purchase tickets; you still have to call to get yours during their regular business hours.

Quick Notes: the May 23 Good Charlotte show has been cancelled at the Ventura Theater; Jon over at Leashless will be hosting the Listening Room Open Mic weekly on Tuesday nights until further notice; Big Adventure has landed a Wednesday night residency at Oak and Main; you can find out what psychedelic jazz funk sounds like when Los Retros and Evolution Burger play Concrete Jungle on Friday, May 24; Ventura College Performing Arts Center hosts El Bracero, a Mariachi opera on Friday May 24; River Ripley, RyMi and the Martians along with Tattered Angels play Namba downtown on Saturday May 25; and Topa Mountain Winery will have live music with Bryan Titus Trio on Memorial Day, Monday, May 24.

The Pam Baumgardner Music Hour returns to KPPQ-LP at 104.1 FM after a short hiatus following the passing of my father Gilbert Sanchez. Airdates are Tuesdays and Fridays at 5 pm and Sundays at noon. You can also listen with the MyTuner app for your phone or online at CapsMedia.org.

It’s still three months away, but I cannot wait for the Ventura County Fair this year! I’m loving their music line up which is always included in the price of admission. The fair runs July 31 through August 11 with music most nights on the Grandstand stage starting with Styx on the July 31, then it’s Martina McBride on Thursday, August 1, with Melissa Etheridge on Friday, August 2. Saturday, August 3 has a triple bill with The Ohio Players, The Emotions and Evelyn “Champagne” King. Sunday is Dia de la Familia concert with X Ambassadors on Monday August 5. Tuesday has two shows, the earlier one features Tommy James and the Shondells and that evening it’s Brothers Osborne. Wednesday, August 7, it’s Daughtry, and then on his “Good to be Bad Tour” – 45 years of Rock, it’s none other than George Thorogood and the Destroyers. I’d say I’m saving my favorite for last, but it is actually the last concert of the fair, and they are one of my all-time favorite bands, it’s Collective Soul on Friday, August 9. The final two days the Grand Stand arena always hosts the P.R.C.A. pro rodeo.

There will be plenty of music at Surf ‘n’ Suds beer festival this year on Saturday, May 18, at Ventura State Beach (entrance at San Pedro Street off Pierpont Blvd). While tasting all the suds and ciders from over 65 breweries, you take in music from Soul Majestic, Flogging Seagulls and DJ Hecktik. For more information and tickets, go to www.SurfBeerFest.com/Ventura.

Quick Notes: Gindick has a new CD, you can get your own copy when he plays Grapes and Hops on Thursday, May 9; There will be a punk show at Concrete Jungle Brewing Friday, May 10; the Spring Swing Big Band Dance with Ventura Jazz Orchestra featuring Donna Greene will be held at Knights of Columbus downtown on Friday, May 10; Mother Sting Ray (formerly Strange Weather) play Oak and Main on Sunday, May 12; Ventura Music Festival presents NICO on Friday, May 10, at the Ventura College Performing Arts Center; Pizza Man Dan on Victoria hosts a Celtic Music Slow Session on the second Tuesday of the month; The Exploited play the Ventura Theater on Friday, May 17; Fluid State is celebrating their anniversary with Ventucky String Band on Saturday, May 18; Maid of Ace out of the UK play Red Cove on Saturday, May 18; The Knit Pickers play Made West on Saturday, May 18; Slim Jim Phantom’s at Discovery on Sunday, May 19; and there will be a fundraising event for Casa at Olivas Adobe on Sunday, May 9, featuring Elvis impersonator, Raymond Mitchell.

And finally, I’m sorry to report the passing of Patrick Buley last month. He was a well-respected musician and will be missed by our community.
