Buenaventura Art Association presents watercolor paintings by Beverly Cunningham

art CunninghamBuenaventura Art Association is presenting an April solo exhibition of watercolor paintings by Beverly Cunningham, titled Expressions of Grace, at its downtown Ventura gallery.

“I love to paint floral still life’s; I am influenced by flowers in my garden,” said the Ventura artist and retired longtime teacher, whose theme is “peace and beauty through floral still life’s.

Buenaventura Gallery, at 700 E. Santa Clara St., is open 11 a.m.- 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. For more information, visit the nonprofit Buenaventura Art Association’s website, www.buenaventuragallery.org, or call 648-1235 during gallery hours.

“Tattoos: Not Just for Drunken Sailors Anymore!”

art price2On April 3 a conversation with Sandra Price was held at the Brooks Institute Screening Room, “Tattoos: Not Just for Drunken Sailors Anymore!” The conversation was held between Focus on the Masters (FOTM) volunteer (and executive assistant) Mary Galbraith and Sandra Price and took the audience to the colorful and fascinating world of Tattoos.

Sandra Price grew up around the world, a Navy “brat.”  Her Philippine father and Norwegian mother encouraged her interest in art and were supportive of her arts education, first at Ventura College, then at Pasadena College of Art & Design. She worked as an animator and was part of a team that won two Emmy awards.

Studio Sunday painting classes at the Museum Ventura County

art museumThe Museum Ventura County’s art instruction series, Studio Sunday, has provided a great reason for friends to gather at the museum and cultivate their inner artist.  The Studio Sunday painting classes are taught by Mary Perez and Megan Bisbee of Vita Arts Center, and are open to all regardless of their level of expertise.

Pre-paid reservations are being taken now for  Sunday, April 17: “Frida & A Margarita”

Master the self-portrait as Frida Kahlo did, incorporating symbolic elements and bright colors.

Brooks Institute Portfolio Show opening April 22

Join Brooks Institute on Friday, April 22 from 4:00-6:00 pm for the Portfolio Show opening reception, celebrating the work of April 2016 graduating class. The work in this exhibition is selected by the students with the support of a faculty member and features projects created by graduating students in the Graphic Design, Professional Photography, and Visual Journalism programs.

Ventura Unified School District all-district art show April 1-3

The Ventura Unified School District is having an all-district art show that will include student work from elementary, middle and high schools.
art vusdOne of the featured artists is Chloe Yahner who created the image on the art show poster.  A senior at Foothill Technology High School she stated “I have been painting since I was five.  Excited by the feeling of completion, a creative fire burns inside of me.”

In addition to Chloe’s wonderful art work there will be a “musician series“ created by VUSD’s 5th grade elementary students. These art pieces were created to honor the band Big Bad Voodoo Daddy who have generously given their time and talent to supporting Ventura Unified School District’s Music and Arts programs.

art vusd3Opening night is Friday, April 1st from 5:00-7:30 at the Museum of Ventura    there will be food trucks and music on site.  Admission is free.

The art show continues Saturday, April 2nd, and Sunday, April 3rd.

Saturday, April 2nd, 11:00 am- 3:00pm. $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for Seniors, $1.00 for children.

French artist and Post-Impressionist painter Paul Cézanne at Ventura Breeze Basement Gallery

art Paul_CézannePaul Cézanne is a  French artist and Post-Impressionist painter whose work has laid the foundations of the transition from the 20th-century conception of artistic endeavor to a new and radically different world of art in the 21th -century. Cézanne’s often repetitive, exploratory brushstrokes are highly characteristic and clearly recognizable. He used planes of color and small brushstrokes that build up to form complex fields. His work will be at the Ventura Breeze Basement Gallery from April 1, 2016 until April 1, 2078.

Cezanne will attend an opening reception for the show from 5-7 p.m. and will be signing his work at the Gallery. Lobster and beer will be served.

“El Nino at Ventura Pier” takes first place in Santa Paula Art Show

Ventura artist  Tony Jankowski captured the wonderful waves and pier in his piece called “El Nino at Ventura Pier” which took first place in the annual Santa Paula Art Show. His mother exposed him to European Masters and encouraged him to draw and paint at an early age. At age 5, he painted his first watercolor and took up traditional oil painting at the age of 13. His paintings have been shown at galleries throughout United States, Central and South America, where he has won numerous awards.

Hiroko Yoshimoto’s Biodiversity series is the springboard for this abstract oil pastel by Montalvo Elementary 5th grader, Aisha.

Ventura County Potters’ Guild presents Scott Semple … Throwing BIG March 28

The Potters’ Guild welcomes local and internationally recognized Santa Barbara County ceramic artist Scott Semple.  Semple is a large format potter who has lived, worked, and studied with native peoples and resources in some of the most remote places in the country and abroad. He was introduced to clay in his freshman year of high school when he found that his fellow surfing classmates also took ceramics. “For me, the commitment to becoming a ceramic artist meant to become aware of the acute level of service we choose to pay to history as artists, lending our interpretations to fire. “
