By David Dickey, Ventura Chief of Police –
Ventura is a safe city by many measures, but I often hear from our community that they do not always feel safe. Those feelings matter. Challenges like traffic issues, property crime, criminal vagrancy, and illegal drug activity can erode the overall sense of safety. At the same time, expectations for how we address crime and safety have changed. Meeting those expectations requires more than just responding to calls; it takes engagement, proactive strategies, and a clear roadmap for the future.
That is why we are developing the Ventura Police Department’s next Strategic Plan, and why I am asking for your input. The plan will be grounded in the voices of our officers and professional staff who selflessly serve Ventura every day, as well as from our residents, families, business owners, and visitors who call our city home or rely on our services.
Transparency and collaboration are essential for effective policing. Ongoing community connection is foundational to maintaining the trust that makes true public safety possible. We are committed to working together to set priorities and address the complex issues we face.
To support this, we have launched the Ventura Police Strategic Plan Community Questionnaire, a brief 3–5-minute survey available in English and Spanish. It is your opportunity to tell us what safety means to you and what priorities we should focus on over the next few years. Whether you want to see more emphasis on traffic safety, stronger efforts to address quality-of-life issues, or expanded youth and neighborhood strategies, your perspective is essential. Your input will guide our priorities, technology, and resource allocation.
By listening to you and developing strategies with input from our officers and professional staff, we will create a plan that is responsive and rooted in community connection. Safety is a shared responsibility. Together, we can make Ventura safer.
