Wednes 7/30:
12:16am, monitoring affects of the 8.8 magnitude earthquake off Russia. Most of the forecasts and observations are benign. Multiple officers arriving for the tsunami event predicted for approximately 1am arrival.
1:33am, officers aboard Rescue Boat 19 monitoring affects of the tsunami throughout the harbor. The initial surge, outbound registered as 2ft drop on the Port District tide gauge. The GPS on RB19 measured 3kts while adrift.
5:00am, in a zoom meeting with Tsunami warning center. They believe the event will continue with surges throughout the day. Observed reports of some damage to Cresent city harbor, northern California.
5:33am, RB19 contacted a large sailboat advising of threat, they continued out of the harbor on a trip to Catalina Island and were well informed of the tsunami.
9:45am, manning the ops center, observed strong surges, rapid tide fluctuations +/- 2-3ft so officers launching the boats out and off the docks for their safety.
12:45pm, observed the most significant surge/tide fluctuation of the event. The ATON buoys (aid to navigation) in the harbor are significantly “off-station.”
Thursday 7/31:
10:20am, attempting to return storage dock and other equipment, but observing +/- 1ft surges still occurring unpredictably so officers decided to wait to tow.
9:48pm, dispatched to a fall patient in the Ventura Marina Community. Officers responded with VFD/AMR to assist with patient assessment and treatment.
Friday 8/1:
9:15am, while on patrol in Rescue B19, observed a petroleum sheen in the South Basin of the harbor. Officers investigated, but were unable to locate a source.
11:00am, new village security company, Nobleguard Security will begin service of a newly awarded contract from the Port District today.
1:20pm, officers aboard Fireboat 1, returning ATON buoys (Aids-to-Navigation) back on station in the main channel of the harbor. The buoys were moved off station during the tsunami event that occurred Tuesday-Thursday with surges and tidal fluctuations occurring unpredictably all hours of the day(s).
Saturday 8/2:
8:30am, officers aboard Fireboat 1 to monitor the State Parks lifeguard tryout in front of their headquarters near Ventura Pier. 36 candidates applied and swam.
11:20am, performing general maintenance on the Rescue watercraft (PWC) including charging batteries, unstaining dip stick and thorough cleaning.
3:45pm, received report of a large group of electric bikers at VIM. Advised the RP to contact Ventura PD if anything illegal is observed.
Sunday 8/3:
12:10pm, proctored requal swim of VC Sheriff boat crew in the Pierpont Basin.
4:30pm, dispatched to a fall patient in there vehicle near the VYC. Officers responded with VFD to assist with patient treatment and assessment.
6:23pm, received report of a disabled vessel in distress off N. end of Pierpont, anchored in the surfline. Officers responded in Fireboat, found the 21ft vessel as reported, passed tow line, towed out of danger and back to the harbor.
Monday 8/4:
7:21pm, dispatched to Haz-mat, oil pipeline broken by a falling tree branch. Officers responded with City/County Fire Hazmat apparatus. A large amount of crude oil was spilled into the containment area and onto Spinnaker Drive.
