The Museum of Ventura County invites you to explore What is Beauty? Rethinking Women’s Portraiture in Art, an inspiring exhibition featuring 14 portraits by Ventura County artists. Spanning works from 1939 to 2011, the exhibit showcases diverse styles from vibrant realism to minimalist simplicity challenging conventional standards of beauty shaped by art, media, and society.
Among the collection are four portraits from the celebrated Face of Ventura series, first published in the Ventura Breeze. This unique series, created by Johanna Spinks, highlights the personal stories and faces of Ventura residents.
Other featured artists include Carlisle Cooper, Hiroko Yoshimoto, John Nava, John Nichols (whose work is featured in the exhibition logo), Kitty Botke, Lis Schwitters, Michael Ward, Neal Barr, Omar d’León and Robert Clunie. Together, these artists offer eclectic interpretations of women portraiture, sparking conversations about identity and representation.
The exhibition opens on January 17th at the Museum of Ventura County, located at 100 E. Main St., from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Remarks will begin at 5:45 p.m. Enjoy live music from the Ventura Music Festival, a curated atmosphere, and beer and wine available for purchase. https://venturamuseum.org.
