Vol. 10, No. 19 – June 21 – July 4, 2017 – Ventura Music Scene

by Pam Baumgardner
VenturaRocks.com

The 2017 Ventura Music Festival is still a few weeks away, which means you should get your tickets now to attend one or more, or all of the events they have lined up. The theme this year is “An American Season” with the grand finale staring the one and only Michael Feinstein featuring stories and songs from the great American songbook on Sunday, July 23 at the Oxnard Performing Arts Center. There will be performances all week long at different venues; I’m particularly looking forward to Perla Batalla’s tribute to Leonard Cohen on Friday, July 21, at the Ventura College Performing Arts Center. All the event and ticket information can be found at VenturaMusicFestival.org.

In case you missed the memo, Roadshow Revival has moved from downtown Mission Park to Discovery this year, Saturday, July 1, with Los Lobos headlining the day. There will still be two stages with bands playing all day long and an after party indoors that evening (separate cover charge for each event). Roadshow Revival started out as a tribute to the man in black but has since evolved into a celebration of American roots music. You can find the full band line up and ticket information at RoadshowRevival.com.

The City of Ventura will once again celebrate the Fourth of July starting with the Pushem-Pullem Parade at 10 am followed by the 42nd annual street fair downtown. Several stages will provide live musical entertainment including such bands as Rin Kon Tiki, Pier 101, Rhythm 805, Big Adventure, Raised on Vinyl, and more. Then later in the day catch the fireworks show and family picnic at Ventura College sponsored by the Rotary Club of Ventura; gates open at 5 with the fireworks at about 9 pm with entertainment including live music in between. The Rotary Club donates 100% of the event’s net proceeds to benefit charitable community programs in Ventura.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy has released their latest CD entitled Louie Louie Louie, a tribute to three musical giants, Louis Armstrong, Louis Jordan and Louis Prima. The entire CD from start to finish demonstrates Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s love, admiration and first-class musicianship in honoring the three Louies. I’m incredibly proud to include this one in my private music collection.

Quick notes: Jodi Farrell and TreCoustics played their final show at Grapes and Hops Friday, June 16; Congratulations to Topa Mountain Winery as they celebrate their one-year anniversary on June 25 with live music from Orgone and the Bryan Titus Trio; Ventura Theater announced Queens of the Stone Age will play there August 10; and don’t forget next month it’s Surf Rodeo July 15 and 16.

Distinguished songbirds stage benefit

Duo is raising their voices to benefit the Young Artists Fund of the VMF.

Soprano Patricia Lathrop-McPherson and baritone Steven Z. Perren will sing for a good cause on Sunday, June 25th, at 4pm at Temple Beth Torah. The duo is raising their voices with an American Songbook Sampling to benefit the Young Artists Fund of the Ventura Music Festival and to whet the appetite for the Festival’s big Michael Feinstein “Great American Songbook” concert that closes their annual festival a month later. Lathrop-McPherson and Perren are each members of the VMF Board of Directors.

Benefit tickets for the June 25 concert are $25. Temple Beth Torah is located at 7620 Foothill Road. The program includes a guest appearance by Blake Kasting, recent Ventura High grad and winner of VMF’s 2016 Student Jazz Competition.

The VMF Young Artists Fund includes the annual Music in the Schools program, Student Jazz Competition, Rising Stars concerts, a special Children’s Concert for VUSD, master classes and other youth education, engagement and performance programs.

Benefit Tickets are available online at VenturaMusicFestival.org, or reserve by phone – 648.3146. Ticket and program information on the “American Season” July Festival is also on the VMF website.

Vol. 10, No. 18 – June 7 – June 20, 2017 – Ventura Music Scene

The Ojai Music Festival is underway taking over several venues and running June 8 – June 11. You’ll need tickets for most events, but there are several free concerts throughout the week.  You can get information at OjaiFestival.org.

Rene Ponce gave me the lowdown on Goodnight Kiss when they recently played at Ollie’s Duck and Dive in Malibu.  He told me they’ve played there several times, but this last time Kid Rock was in the crowd and accepted the band’s invitation to join them for a couple of tunes. How cool is that? The guys return to Ventura on June 17th when they open for Brothers Fortune at Bombay’s.

The Ventura Beach Club has been booked on Saturday, June 17th by Stay True and ideal Music Collective hoping to alleviate those “No-Warped-Tour-Again-This-Year-Blues” by lining up bands and DJs indoors and out.  On the bill includes Split Second, Love Thing, Yearbooks, No Advisory, Two Brothers and Pretty Well.  If you love punk, ska, emo & pop, you won’t want to miss this one.

Ones to Watch Productions (O2W) have announced that Grammy Award winning artist Lucinda Williams will be headlining this year’s Topa Topa Folk Fest at the Libbey Bowl in October. Leading up to the event, O2W will be hosting a folk fest showcase on June 17 at Topa Mountain Winery featuring Justine Bennett, Tim Curran, The Brambles and Shane Alexander. Get more information on all their events at TopaTopaFolkFest.com.

Quick notes: You can get your tickets for Roadshow Revival with Los Lobos headlining on Saturday, July 1 at Discovery at RoadShowRevival.com; The Wine Rack is rebranding itself as Vintura Tasting Room & Wine Rack; the Boatyard Café is undergoing some upgrades and I understand renaming itself as the Boatyard Pub; Alastair Greene is heading out to jam at the Chicago Blues Fest on June 10; Shawn Jones returns from Europe and will be at Grapes and Hops on Saturday, June 17; and finally don’t miss Alex Nestor when she plays at Café Fiore, on Friday, June 16, she opened Sunday (May 28) at the Simi Valley Cajun and Blues fest.

And finally, I’ve officially made a name change for my radio show on CAPS Media’s KPPQ-LP, 104.1 FM.  I seriously thought about calling it Pam on the Rocks, but out of respect to Rodney Bingenheimer (Rodney on the Roq), I opted against it; and because I can’t use Ventura Rocks, my third chose, and apparent final choice is: The 805 Music Scene with Pam Baumgardner.  The name alone encompasses more than Ventura, even more than Ventura County which is good. I still play indie artists from outside our area who have caught my ear, and I spin tunes from bands who have come here to play. Tune in and support local music Tuesdays and Fridays 5-6 pm.

Vol. 10, No. 17 – May 24 – June 6, 2017 – Ventura Music Scene

Are you ready for the Cajun & Blues Festival?  It falls over Memorial Day weekend May 27-28th at Rancho Santa Susana Community Park in Simi Valley. This year’s lineup looks pretty tasty with such notable acts at Doug Kershaw, Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, The Yardbirds, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, and the Robby Krieger Band as Krieger continues to celebrate 50 years of The Doors music. I’m also looking forward to catching Kelly’s Lot, the 44’s and getting to know all the other acts on the bill.  You can find ticket information at www.SimiCajun.org.

The Ventura County fair has released most of their grandstand concert schedule for this summer’s run.  There will be Smash Mouth and Sugar Ray on Thursday, 8/3; Huey Lewis and the News on Friday, 8/4; KC and the Sunshine Band on Saturday, 8/5; Dia de la Familia concert Sunday afternoon, 8/6; Billy Currington on Monday, 8/7; The Spinners on Tuesday afternoon, 8/8; Shinedown on Wednesday, 8/9; Gabriel Iglesias on Thursday, 8/10; and Wynonna and the Big Noise on Friday, 8/11.

Speaking of music over the summer, several of the Music Under the Stars concerts at the historic Olivas Adobe have and will sell out.  Several bands of note include WhosNext, The Swing Kings, Steely Jam, Celebration of Joni Mitchell, Dead Man’s party, Fantastic Diamond and more. Call the City to order your tickets during regular business hours at (805) 658-4726.

Reggae returns to Café Fiore’s Treehouse on Sunday afternoons with the Babylon Rockers taking the floor on Sunday, May 28. The band tells me they’ll be offering up new takes on some well-known tunes, original reggae music as well as some lesser known gems. Music runs 6-10:30 pm.

Hi Hat Entertainment is bringing back Billy Vera, but this time featuring his full band, Billy Vera and the Beaters on Friday, May 26. Enjoy their popular songs such as “Millie make some chili” and his #1 radio hit song, “At this Moment.”

Quick notes: The Pullmen are heading back to Europe for another tour this time with only three members; Brothers Fortune is back in the studio working on a couple of songs; Donna Lynn Casky’s CD release party is at NAMBA on Saturday, May 27 and the San Francisco jazz trio, Charged Particles, return to Squashed Grapes Saturday, May 27.

And finally, be sure to tune in for my “mostly local” music show on CAPS Media’s KPPQ-LP at 104.1 FM on Tuesdays from 5 -6 pm. I’m having a blast finding local music nuggets to share like vintage music from Ariel to the Missing 23rd, plus I’m getting new music in from the likes of Ozomatli and Big Voodoo Daddy. CAPS hasn’t launched their simulcast on the internet yet, so if you’re local, be sure to tune and support!

Jazz vocalist helping community

Local Ventura jazz vocalist and social activist Toni Jannotta is on a mission.  As the recipient of two Ventura arts grants, Toni now believes that music is for the benefit of society in ways she hadn’t realized before. With her 2007 Cultural Arts Fellowship Grant from the City of Ventura, Toni merely finished her 3rd album.  But it was with her 2010 Artist in the Community Partnership Grant, awarded to her by the Ventura County Arts Council, that Toni found her groove and the meaning of music as a healing tool.

“Voices of the Homeless” was Toni’s first experience with producing music to help others.  It was a live storytelling concert performed at Working Artists Ventura (the WAV) on August 21, 2010.  “Voices of the Homeless” brought together jazz improvisers with members of our local homeless community.  It was a concert where the focus was on the homeless themselves educating the audience on who they really were.  At the same time this concert demonstrated the unique quality of improvisation.  All the music was made up on the spot as the musicians listened and responded to the stories they heard.  The performance later became a documentary.  It won Toni the 2012 Earth Charter and the Arts Award given to her by Citizens for Peaceful Resolutions.

Now Toni is ready to release another musical project in an effort to help and heal.  This project’s goal is to bring comfort to all those who have suffered abuse yet believe it was their fault.

The project is called “My Little Heart, Ruthie.”   It is a picture book and album, that tells the story of a little heart in isolation that must learn to free itself.  It is told as a children’s rhyme.  The illustrations are by artist Jennifer Mones.  Along with the book is a 22-minute jazz-inspired musical suite with narration, so that the reader can sit with the book, listen to the music, and be told a bedtime story.  The album features jazz harpist Carol Robbins, L.A. drummer Paul Tavenner, bassist Granville “Danny” Young, and our own multi-instrumental Venturan, Jon Crosse, who plays trumpet.

Toni’s hope is that this project soothes the middle school child who has been bullied or has witnessed things no child should have to, helps the adult still working through past traumas and wishes to feel alive again, and heals anybody, whether young or old, who would like to be held and told a simple little story of hope.  This project is for all those who need to be reminded that what they suffered was never their fault.

This project is in its finishing stages.  If you would like to help, please visit https://www.gofundme.com/ruthieheart.

Are you ready for a beer festival with a surf twist? Then you’ll want to check out Surf ‘N’ Suds on Saturday, May 20, at San Buenaventura State Beach (901 San Pedro Street entrance). They’ll have over 50 breweries represented and of course live music to entertain while sipping on your suds; this year it’s Synrgy, Crosscut 805 Band and DJ Hecktik. There will be a free bicycle valet, you can catch the free Ventura Trolley, or check out the other shuttles available to get to the beach.  For ticket and more general information go to SurfBeerfest.com.

The Rubicon Theater is hosting “Music for Changing Times” a weeklong festival bringing together three generations of activist artists in a series of events celebrating music. It runs May 8-13 which includes performances from Grammy winners Peter Yarrow and Noel Paul Stookey (Peter, Paul and Mary). Go to RuiconTheatre.org for more information.

This year’s “Rising Stars” concert from the Ventura Music Festival will be held on Friday, May 12, at the First United Methodist Church (1338 E. Santa Clara) and it’s free to the public. Expect an outstanding mix of young choral, classical and jazz performers including the Ventura College Chamber Singers and the 2017 Student Jazz Competition winner Angelo Velasquez with his trio.

Alastair Greene has announced that he has left the Alan Parsons Live Project after seven years touring with the band.  He said he’s had the opportunity to see much of the world because of his guitar and a generous man named Alan Parsons.  He’ll be focusing on his solo career and other musical adventures.

Local artist, Kyle, who has been certified platinum for his song “iSpy” had a concert Saturday, April 29 at the Ventura Theater.  It was great to see so many kids lined up around the block to support their local friend. You’d expect that kind of turn out from his hometown, but he’s sold out shows in Salt Lake City, Detroit and Chicago. Way to go Super Duper Kyle!

It’s finally been announced that Los Lobos will be headlining this year’s Roadshow Revival.  Don’t forget its new location is at Discovery Ventura and will be held on Saturday, July 1. Other bands on the bill include Raging Arb and the Redheads, The Walking Phoenixes, The Rockin’ Rebels, Phantom Pomps, Hard Six, and more.  Get the lowdown at RoadshowRevival.com.

Quick notes: Cask Alehouse (5952 Telegraph Rd) is featuring Adam Tunney with jazz, standards and lounge tunes every Monday; Medicine Hat can be found at Cork (1930 E. Main St) Fridays 5/12 and 5/19; September Begins CD release party is Saturday, May 20, at Bombay’s; Black Dragon will open for Foghat at the Canyon Club on May 26;
