The Ojai Valley Museum offers July 29 from 5 to 7 pm a free exhibition opening reception. Perception and Persistence features a wide range of artwork by members of the Ojai Studio Artists. Using a variety of styles, techniques, and mediums, the artists explore the push/pull of thinking and making for this exhibition.

July 6 & 20: Parent grief support group. The Compassionate Friends (TCF) of West Ventura County provides free grief support for families after the death of a child. Parents, grandparents and siblings over 16 are welcome to join us on the first and third Wednesday of every month from 7-8:30 p.m. via Zoom. First-time attendees join the call at 6:45 pm. We provide peer-led support where you can openly grieve without being judged. July 8, 9, 10: NAMBA Performing Arts Space is thrilled to announce the 2nd Annual Women’s Voices Festival July 8, 9, and 10th. In the spirit of Hollywood Fringe, Solo Fest, and LA Women’s Theater Festival, Namba Arts, in collaboration with Producer Robyn Migel, brings three unique stories illuminating women’s voices. With over 30 shows being vetted, only three will be nominated for NAMBA’s prestigious “Splash” award.

July 12: The Ventura County Writers Club is offering a class at the Pleasant Valley Parks and Rec facility at 1605 Burnley in Camarillo. June 16: The East Ventura Community Council virtual meeting on Thursday at 7 p.m., Gina Dorrington, Ventura Water’s new General Manager, will speak about the crucially important subject of water supply. Rob Davidson, Ventura County’s Assistant Sheriff of Detention Services, will talk about the new mental health jail ward and services and facilities redesigned for mentally ill-disabled detainees. June 18: The Museum of Ventura County welcomes guests to a free opening reception from 3 – 5 p.m. at its Main Street campus. The Museum will debut of three new exhibitions: All That Glitters Is Not Gold, Chromatic: The Museum in Six Colors and, Always Keep Creating, the Resiliency of Carol Rosenak. Early arrivals are invited to enjoy a Bee’s Knees, Prohibition-era cocktail provided by Ventura Spirits (while supplies last). The Museum’s transformation leads visitors on a historical journey, from the 1920s as lived by residents of Ventura County, through 100 years of collected County artifacts.

June 21: On Tuesday, 6:00 to 7:30pm, Ventura Land Trust will host a summer solstice drum circle at Harmon Canyon Preserve as a fundraiser to benefit the Harmon Canyon Campaign. The drum circle, facilitated by John Lacques of Ventura-based company Drumtime, will encourage guests to connect with nature and honor their relationship to the seasons. The solstice marks the astronomical start of summer in the northern hemisphere, and the longest day of the year.

Funds raised from drum circle ticket purchases will benefit the campaign. Members of the public are invited to donate to the Harmon Canyon Campaign for the benefit of the preserve, its wild inhabitants, and all people who need and enjoy open spaces (www.venturalandtrust.org/harmoncanyoncampaign).
Guests can purchase a ticket to the drum circle that includes a reservation for a drum provided by Drumtime for $50; “bring your own drum” tickets are available for $25. Tickets can be purchased at www.venturalandtrust.org/drumcircle.

June 22: The College Area Community Council will hold a meeting on Zoom on Wednesday at 7 pm. June 1: BCNN (Beach Cities Neighbors and Newcomers) will meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Ventura Yacht Club in lovely Ventura Harbor. Warren Takahashi, a local favorite guitarist /vocalist will entertain. His set list features a full range of music spanning the oldies, from Frank Sinatra, & 70’s, 80’s, & even Hawaiian favorites. Our organization serves women from Ventura, Oxnard and Port Hueneme. Newcomers are welcome and there is no charge to check us out and learn about our many activities. Just show up.

June 4: Join Laura Bauer from the Ventura County Chapter of Surfrider Foundation and learn how small changes in your home landscape can make a big difference to our local ocean water quality, water conservation, and wildlife habitats. The event is at the Toppings Room at E.P. Foster Library at 651 East Main Street. All proceeds from the event will go to the Surfrider Foundation to support its mission to protect the world’s oceans. Ojai happenings

Sixteen-year-old author Micaela Ellis will visit the Ojai Library at 2pm on Saturday, June 4, 2022, to speak about her book, Autism over the Years: A Twelve Year Old’s Memoir. During this talk Micaela will share her perspectives on life as a young adult with autism.

She was diagnosed with autism at the age of two and a half and has spent over a decade learning, growing, and working to overcome the many challenges associated with this disorder. She is currently finishing up high school, learning to drive, and making travel plans with her family. As she writes in her book:

Begin your summer celebration in Libbey Park in beautiful Ojai during the Music Festival, June 11th and 12th and experience Ventura Potters’ Guild Open Air Pottery Market. Over 30 clay artists will display their unique, handmade pottery.  Students from the Ventura College Clay Club will provide wheel throwing demonstrations throughout both days of the event.

Come shop for mugs and goblets, bowls and casseroles, plates and platters, earrings and necklaces, tiles and planters, sculptures and teapots, and much more, all fashioned by the local Guild clay artists. Visit with the makers and learn how they create their pieces, from hand building a garden sculpture to throwing a dinner plate on the wheel. This event is free, child-friendly and will be open to the public 10 to 6 on Saturday and 10 to 5 on Sunday.

Renowned quartet Gov’t Mule – led by GRAMMY® Award-winning vocalist, songwriter, guitar legend, and producer Warren Haynes – will be heading out on a U.S. summer tour supporting their critically acclaimed, chart-topping blues album, Heavy Load Blues. The cross-country outing, incorporating a mix of headlining shows, festival appearances and select multi-band/support dates, will be stopping locally in Ojai on Sunday, June 19 at Libby Bowl. The Ojai Art Center is kicking off its 45th annual Art in the Park celebration Memorial weekend on May 28 and May 29, 2022. Unlike last year’s socially distant Art in the Park, 2022, Walking through downtown Ojai’s Libbey Park where over 80 artists will showcase their recent works. 

Last year’s Best of Show, Lungala Nzalamba, returns to Art in the Park. He uses a wax resistant fabric dying technique called batik to create vibrant and relatable images.

For 34 years, the Ojai Wine Festival has served as the primary non-profit fundraising effort of the Rotary Club of Ojai West Foundation and its numerous philanthropic endeavors. This year, proceeds from the Ojai Wine Festival will benefit local charities including HELP of Ojai, Secure Beginnings, Ojai Unified School District, and support the free Ojai Community Band concerts in Libbey Bowl in July and August. Historically, proceeds from the Ojai Wine Festival have donated more than $1,400,000 to Rotary’s charity efforts around the world. 

This year, event participants of the 34th Annual Ojai Wine Festival can taste wines from all of California’s unique growing regions in one beautiful lakeside location.

Many children and teens have experienced the death of a loved one during the pandemic. This is a difficult time for anyone grieving a loss. Livingston’s Grief and Bereavement Program recognizes the value children and teens receive from sharing their grief experience with their peers. Our groups provide support, connection and validation that they are not alone.

The Good Grief Club meets the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month from 5:30 to 7 pm

The Young Teen Group meets the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month from 5:30 to 6:30 pm

May 19: The East Ventura Community Council will meet via zoom on Thursday. Meredith Hart, the city of Ventura’s new Economic Development Manager, will talk about plans within the city’s business community. In addition, Ventura County Ballot Measures A and B will be discussed. Commander Weeks of the Ventura Police Department will share the area crime statistics. The Council represents those who live east of Victoria Avenue, and the public is encouraged to attend and participate. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m., link below. May 19: Join in the fun at our Channel Islands Gulls Fundraising Luncheon and help raise funds for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI Ventura). NAMI is a grassroots, family and consumer self-help support and advocacy organization dedicated to improving the lives of people with severe mental illnesses. The Luncheon will be on Thursday at Yolanda’s, 86 East Daily Drive, Camarillo. Social hour will be at 11 a.m. and Noon for meeting. Cost: $40 per person – Advance reservations and payment required. May 21-22: The Gold Coast Gem Show is coming to the Ventura County Fairgrounds. I will be featuring 30 dealers, including demonstrators and local Gem and Mineral Societies. Diane Cook, the owner of Daisy’s Rocks and Things, has curated a variety of vendors/dealers who specialize in gems, minerals, and fossils. Show goers will find unique and quality specimens, beads, jewelry, and lapidary supplies, including demonstrations and activities for the whole family.

The show is free and open to the public (fairground parking is additional). The show hours are 10-6 p.m. on Saturday, May 21 and 10-4 p.m. on Sunday, May 22. The Ventura County Fairgrounds is located at 10 W. Harbor Blvd.

May 25: The recently passed federal infrastructure bill potentially provides much needed funding for communities like Ventura. Congressperson Salud Carbajal will be explaining to the College Area Community Council how the city can take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. City Councilperson Doug Halter and Ventura Fire Prevention Supervisor Brett Reed will also be speaking. On May 10, at 8:00 pm, Flamenco dancer Savannah Fuentes and singer/multi-instrumentalist, Diego Amador Jr., direct from Seville, will present Eterno, el Flamenco vive, at the Ojai Valley Woman’s Club. Savannah and Diego have forged a unique artistic partnership after a successful summer tour as a duo. Eterno promises to be a dynamic and emotionally charged presentation of authentic Spanish Flamenco music and dance.

Local author Elizabeth Kraus will visit the Ojai Library at 2pm on Saturday, May 21, to discuss her book, 3 Sisters, 3 Weeks, 3 Countries (Still Talking). This presentation will be followed by a brief Q&A session.

A late bloomer, Elizabeth “Liz” Moore Kraus enrolled in Ventura College at age forty-two, earning her MA in English Literature six years later. Join Ojai author and naturalist Lanny Kaufer for a potential once-in-a-lifetime event: a Full Moon Sunset Nature Hike and Total Lunar Eclipse with complete visibility on Sunday evening, May 15, from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. The next time a total lunar eclipse will be visible in Ventura County before 1 a.m. or later at night is August 6, 2036.

On the way up in the daylight, they’ll stop along the trail to meet some valuable edible and medicinal plants including Blue Elderberry, Coastal Sagebrush, Prickly-Pear Cactus, Horehound, Black Sage, Purple Sage, and Chia Sage. Kaufer will have copies of his new book, Medicinal Herbs of California, with him for sale and signing before and after the hike.

May 10: Ventura County Writers Club invites aspiring writers to join their bi-annual “Join a Writing Workshop Group” meeting at 1605 Burnley St. in Camarillo at 7 p.m.
“Anyone interested in writing needs to learn the power of a writing workshop,” says VCWC Vice President Pat Caloia. VCWC is a non-profit volunteer society driven by writers for writers. All club activities are intended to expand writers’ creativity and business skills.

May 21-27: National Safe Boating Week is an excellent time to refresh on safe and responsible boating and ensure you have all safety measures before heading out. On Saturday, boaters and their families are invited to attend the Safe Boating Open House at U.S. Coast Guard Station Channel Islands. Local organizations and public safety agencies will be onsite to provide information on the latest boating safety.

May 28: Saturday, the Ventura County Handweavers and Spinners Guild will hold a hybrid in-person / zoom meeting at the Studio Channel Islands Art Center (SCIART) – 2222 Ventura Blvd., Old Town Camarillo, from 9 – Noon. Men’s Grief Support Group. Livingston’s Grief and Bereavement Program provides free grief support for men grieving the death of a loved one. April 21: The East Ventura Community Council virtual meeting will be on Thursday, at 7p.m. The City of Ventura Acting Fire Marshall, Brett Reed, will present information on better protecting our homes and businesses during the continuing drought by building up our “defensible space”. In addition, Eric Berg of Pacific Coast Landscape Design will describe the new inclusive playground at Arroyo Verde Park, built to replace the equipment that was destroyed in the Thomas Fire. Area crime statistics will be shared by Commander Weeks of the Ventura Police Department.

April 30: The day to enjoy beautiful quilts and unusual vehicles as Camarillo Quilters Association present ‘Quilts and Cars on Tour’. The event is open to the public and will feature hundreds of quilts located in gardens, studios, and community centers among the Camarillo, Oxnard and Ventura communities. Doors open 9 a.m. Camarillo Community Center, 1605 E. Burnley, Camarillo, and the Dudley House, 197 Ashwood, Ventura. Guests can purchase tickets for the tour and receive the locations map for the other eight destination. Tickets are $15 per person, and available the day of the event. Tour sites are open 10 – 4 p.m. and the Boutique ends at 5 p.m.

Open house tours of the 1892 Dudley Historic House Museum will take place on Sunday, from 1- 4 p.m. There will also be a continuous Container Gardening 101 class beginning at 1 p.m. in the pergola area on the Loma Vista side behind the museum. May 1: Join us to beat the Guinness book of records deep water aerobics , bring your flotation device . Expect to stay for 1 hour. Start time is 1:45 – 3:45 p.m. and is led by Mary Lincoln.
Pool is 7-8 feet and the water temperature 78/79 degrees. Lifeguards will be on duty.

May 21: The INCA ensemble will perform at the Hill Road Library 1070 S. Hill Road, Ventura at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. They will be sharing music and dances from the native Incas of Peru, the Criollo coastal communities, the Amazon natives, and the Afro-Peruvian communities of Peru. This program is made possible in part with a grant from the California Arts Council. This event is free and open to the public.
