Ventura Audubon Society field trips for September

September 3, 8:30 am. Camino Real Park.
Raeann Koerner 701-1919.
Camino Real is a grassy park surrounded by pines and eucalyptus and is an excellent fall migrant hotspot. Target birds will include Pacific-slope Flycatcher, Yellow Warbler, Wilson’s Warbler, Western Tanager and Black-headed Grosbeak, but any number of cool warblers show up at this park during migration!

September 9, 8:30 a.m. Arroyo Verde Park.
Linda Easter 482-7537.
Enjoy birding the oak woodland, grassy areas, and chaparral in this long, broad canyon. Early fall migrants may include Western Tanager, Rufous Hummingbird, Ash-throated Flycatcher, and Phainopepla.

September 17, 8:00 a.m. Santa Clara River Estuary/Surfers Knoll.
Tevin Schmitt 661 904-1563
We hope to see a variety of shorebirds including Western Snowy Plovers, Ruddy and Black Turnstones and hopefully Surfbirds which are always an exciting treat. We will also tackle some gull and tern identification, so bring your field guides!

September 19, 8:30 a.m. Emma Wood State Beach/Ventura River Estuary
Adele Fergusson 415-4304
We will meet at the entrance to Emma Wood State Beach and begin searching the scrub for sparrows and warblers. Then follow the path that leads through the willow forest (often finding wrentits and other secretive birds) and finally across the sand dunes to the Ventura River Estuary. The estuary is always an exciting place to bird, and target birds will include: Western Snowy Plover, Black-bellied and Semipalmated Plover, Willet, Whimbrel, Black Turnstone, Red-necked Phalarope and Forster’s Tern. There will be a fair amount of walking, so please dress appropriately in layers and comfortable shoes.

September 23, 8:00 a.m. Ventura Settling Ponds.
Frank DeMartino 906-8733.
The Settling Ponds at the Ventura Harbor is a reliable place to find ducks, summer gulls and terns, as well as songbirds and raptors. We should hear Yellow Warblers and maybe some fall migrants!

A benefit for Notes for Notes™

A benefit for Notes for Notes™ (N4N™) – Music Making for our Youth – this coming Friday at the Squashed Grapes:

Support a remarkable organization that brings music making to youth: Notes for Notes™ (N4N™) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that designs, equips, and staffs after-school recording studios inside Boys & Girls Clubs offering youth the opportunity to explore, create, and record music for FREE. N4N Studios are packed with professional instruments – guitars, basses, drums, keyboards/synths – and equipment – DJ gear, digital music workstations – and full recording facilities. Beyond providing access to equipment and resources, N4N educates youth about careers both on the stage and behind the scenes and is expanding throughout the country.

And we now have a Notes for Notes studio right here in Ventura as we continue to position ourselves in the forefront of music making! As they have done for years now – Adam Randall and Josh McNutt at the Squashed Grapes are making it happen. This time it’s partnering with Notes for Notes to bring this concept to Ventura and making a Notes for Notes studio a reality here.

So, join us at the Squashed Grapes for a benefit ($20 cover and more if you feel moved to do so) for a fun evening of good music to support this marvelous cause: It’s  Friday, August 25 at 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. Music by Jazz Villains and Hans Ottsen Quartet.

Vol. 10, No. 23 – Aug 16 – Aug 29, 2017 – Ojai News & Events

Events at the Ojai Library

Beginning at 9 a.m. on Monday, August 21 the Ojai Library will be hosting a live stream viewing of the 2017 Solar Eclipse. A partial solar eclipse will be visible from Southern California, while certain areas of the country will be able to witness a total solar eclipse. We will project a live stream of the eclipse in the library meeting room, and a limited amount of eclipse glasses will be available for those present.

A solar eclipse occurs when the sun is partially or completely obscured by the moon, revealing the solar corona. These events are rare; the next solar eclipse that will be visible from North America will not happen until the year 2024. More information on the eclipse can be found by visiting https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/.

At 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 19 the Ojai Library will host a screening of the documentary film Seeds of Time. After the screening there will be a discussion facilitated by members of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF).

A perfect storm is brewing as agriculture pioneer Cary Fowler races against time to protect the future of our food. Seed banks around the world are crumbling, crop failures are producing starvation and rioting, and the accelerating effects of climate change are affecting farmers globally. This film follows Fowler on a passionate and personal journey that may save the one resource we cannot live without: our seeds.

This event is free and open to the public. For additional information, contact Ron Solórzano, Regional Librarian, at 218-9146.

The Ojai Library is located at 111 East Ojai Ave. Hours of service are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday.
