Oct. 27: The Nature Conservancy is hosting a free bird walk at Ormond Beach to look for fall migrants passing through on their way south for the winter. The walk is about 1 1/2 miles and flat. Nov.5: Open house at the Dudley Historic Museum. Decked to the 9’s – Canines Compete for best costume at Pet Costume Contest

“Could any dog be cuter than me?”

Four-footed “ghosts,” “spirits” and all manner of costumed canines will parade through Ventura Harbor Village, Saturday, October 21 as the 5th Annual Ventura Harbor Village HOWL-O-Ween Dog Costume Contest gets underway starting at Noon. The contest, open to canines only, welcomes both adults and children and is free to the public.

What makes this family-friendly event so unique is that Ventura Harbor Village gives out a “Sea Worthy” ribbon for the dog that dresses in sea theme. Another distinctive feature is the large creativity factor of the costumes for both the dogs and the owners. Prizes are awarded for Spookiest, Sea-Worthy, Creative/Original, Cutest/Prettiest, and Best in Show.  The prizes include gift certificates to Ventura Harbor Village restaurants, boutiques, and attractions. Each winner selects a pumpkin of choice and a blue ribbon.

The first 100 dogs that participate receive a bag of doggie treats from HOWL-O-Ween sponsor Ventura Pet Barn and fifty cents off an ice cream from Coastal Cone.  Approximately 75 dogs attend the event.

Oct. 14: The Ventura and Santa Barbara County chapter of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors (NAWCC) will meet Sunday, in the Campus Student Center of Ventura College,

The meeting starts at noon and at 11 a.m. there will be an informal workshop followed by lunch and an informational meeting and a program.

This month’s program will be presented by David Spong on Fabricating a Verge for an English Clock.

Rev. Karen Wiley will offer her monthly half-day retreat at Meditation Mount on Saturday, October 21, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The topic will be “Discovering the ‘Authentic Self’ within.”

“We have the power within us to create the lives of our dreams,” Rev. Karen says, “but all the preparation takes place within the silence of our own soul.”

The morning will include quiet contemplation, wisdom talks, sacred music, and peaceful walks on the beautiful grounds. Randee Vasilakos, registered Science of Mind Practitioner, will be available to assist with prayers for personal healing. People of all faiths and traditions, or no tradition, are welcome to attend. The Ojai Photography Club will feature photographer Joshua Curry as its guest presenter for October. The free event, “Defining Your Style,” will be held at 7 p.m. on Oct. 17, 2017, in Help of Ojai’s Kent Hall, 111 W. Santa Ana St.

Curry is a full time professional photographer working in the fields of editorial and commercial photography. Monthly free presentations are part of the Ojai Photography Club’s community service and education outreach. The general public is always welcome to attend.

Actor, playwright, and scholar Stephanie Satie will visit the Ojai Library at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 14 to perform her solo play Coming to America: Transformations. This performance depicts a gallery of women whose lives have been transformed, first by extraordinary events in their country of birth, and then by their response to America.

The first in her family to be born in America, Satie was always hungry for a sense of her history. Neither her mother’s nor her father’s family ever spoke of “the old country.” This event is free and open to the public. Shirley Waxman will visit the Ojai Library at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 7, to deliver a talk entitled “East Meets West: Japanese Inspired from Monet to Van Gogh.” Ms. Waxman comes to us via the Santa Barbara Museum of Art’s Community Speakers Program.

When Japanese woodblock prints arrived in Europe they had a profound influence on avant-garde artists of the nineteenth century. Impressionists and post-impressionist artists such as Monet, Mary Cassatt, Degas, Pierre Bonnard, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Vincent van Gogh created art that in composition, color, and imagery, borrowed directly from the Japanese. This talk will explore the development of Japanese woodblock prints and the artists who were inspired by the craze for all things Japanese.

Opera Santa Barbara will return to the Ojai Library to present a Free Noontime Opera Concert on Thursday, October 5. The concert will begin at 12 p.m. in the main room of the library and will last approximately 45 minutes.

Spend your lunch hour listening to members of the Opera Santa Barbara Studio Artists, who will perform a selection of popular opera arias and duets as well as some musical theatre pieces, all accompanied by piano.

The 18th Ojai Film Festival has selected the submissions for this year’s event. Each year the submissions grow creating an outstanding variety of features, documentaries and animated films for Festival attendees. The number of entries totaled 420 films from over 43 countries. The screenings and other Festival activities are held between the Ojai Art Center and Chaparral Auditorium. Kickoff night is November 2 with a free film at the Libbey Bowl and film screenings continue through November 12.

The 10-day Ojai Film Festival has a reputation for showcasing the best new films from emerging and established filmmakers, and has helped launch a number of careers over the last decade.

Along with screenings, the Festival hosts workshops and special events. and host regional filmmakers with a special day of screenings. Two lifetime achievement awards are being given out his year, one to famed cinematographer Johnny E Jensen and another to film and TV actor, Ed Asner.

Oct. 7: On Saturday, from 10- 3 p.m. Ventura Friends of the Library will hold a Book Sale at the Vons at 6040 Telegraph Road. Quality used books at bargain prices. All genres, including special interest, classics and vintage, fiction, including current hardcover and paperbacks; non-fiction,dvds, books on cd and tape more.

Oct. 7: Thousands of free stamps will be combined with information about stamp collecting, games, the chance to make bookmarks with stamps and contests at the 27th annual Youth Stamp Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Dudley House Museum, 197 N. Ashwood Ave. Admission is free.

The event, which is aimed at helping young stamp collectors learn more and introducing others to the hobby, is sponsored by the Ventura County Philatelic Society and the Anacapa Middle School Stamp Club. Five stations will give attendees basic information about how to collect and treat stamps.

Visitors will also get a “swag bag” that includes a color catalog of U.S. stamps, several handouts and a CD or DVD with a complete U.S. album from 1847 on, many topical pages and albums, games and more.

Oct.11: The Ventura County Camera Club will hold a meeting on Wednesday, at 6:30 p.m. at the Poinsettia Pavilion. An instructional workshop on the techniques of image followed by the showing of member images. A professional photographer will critique member’s prints and digital images. Ojai Raptor Center, (ORC) a non-profit 501(c) (3) organization is dedicated to the rehabilitation and release of birds of prey and other wildlife, and to providing educational programs to teach communities about wildlife and our shared environment.

On Sunday October 29 ORC will open its doors to the public for their annual Fall Open House; a rare opportunity to meet the non-releasable “ambassador” raptors, and tour the Center that is otherwise closed to the public year-round due to the sensitive nature of wildlife in rehabilitation.

Guests will have the opportunity to meet a variety of hawks, falcons, and owls up close. There will be back-to-back stage presentations and a number of fun activities for children A silent auction will be held along with a chance to win a release of a rehabilitated raptor with ORC staff. There will be a five dollar suggested donation per person with children under ten admitted for free. This is a dog-free event. Handicapped parking will be available. At 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 16, the Ojai Library will host a screening of the documentary film Divided We Fall. After the screening there will be a discussion facilitated by members of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF).

Divided We Fall is the first film about the 2011 Wisconsin Uprising to present a critical perspective on the movement that inspired workers around the world. This event is free and open to the public. The Ojai Library is located at 111 East Ojai Ave. Hours of service are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday.
