Vol. 17, No. 05 – Nov 29 – Dec 12, 2023 – As I See It

Costs for the water treatment facility project, known as VenturaWaterPure (coverage in previous issues), had been estimated at $374.4 million. The latest estimate is $556.9 million.

This should not come as a surprise. Government projects have an “estimated” cost that just allows initial funding but never seems to be enough for a finished project. Initial funding allows projects to get started, but when money runs out (and the only other recourse is to abandon them) they just throw in more money.

The decline of local news in the United States is increasing. The nation has lost one-third of its newspapers and two-thirds of its newspaper journalists since 2005.

An average of 2.5 newspapers closed each week in 2023 compared to two a week the previous year. Most are weekly publications, in areas with few or no other sources for local news.

At its current pace, the country will hit 3,000 newspapers closed in two decades sometime next year, with just under 6,000 remaining. This is why it is very important to support our advertisers, as it’s support along with some help from those who donate that keeps us publishing.

Some of the funniest shows on TV are commercials that aren’t meant to be funny. Especially the ones with products that aren’t available anywhere else except on TV, so they don’t have any specific retail value.

They go something like this: “These 12 pots and pans usually sell for $23,125, but, if you order in the next 10-minutes (of course they have no idea when you saw the ad) you can buy them for only 5 payments of $29.95. But wait, there’s more if you order in the next 30 seconds you can have for only 4 payments of $29.95.”

Another one I like is a solar powered generator ad that says, “Order now and receive the solar panels for free.” It doesn’t work without the panels. That’s like saying “Order your new car in 10-minutes and receive a free engine.”

Guns in the news:

Gary police say a 3-year-old boy found a gun in his mother’s purse and accidentally shot his 2-year-old brother, fatally wounding him. What would happen if this mother was attacked, would she say, “just a minute while I get my gun out of my purse? Hard to imagine how this mother feels.

According to a national website that tracks gun violence at least nine mass shootings rocked cities across the nation over last weekend, leaving five people dead and 56 wounded. The mass casualty shootings occurred at parties, outside of a nightclub and a convenience store, during a street game of dominoes (always a violent sport) and even at a community meeting on how to combat gun violence (is there some irony here?) Seattle Police Chief Adrian Diaz stated, “Honestly, this is really disturbing when you have victims who are trying to do an outreach effort, trying to help people out and get people on the right path and this is what they get hit with.”

Two men and one woman were fatally shot while another woman was being treated in a hospital trauma unit but was expected to survive. Authorities have said the shooting was a “suspected property dispute,” and the victims have property bordering that of the suspect. I think I saw this in an old cowboy movie.

The weekend violence upped the number of mass shootings in 2023 to 419, with still five months left in the year. An average of two mass shootings have occurred every day this year. In all of 2022, there were 647 mass shootings nationwide, slightly down from 690 that occurred in 2021.

Global average temperatures reached new highs over the past 10-12 months, breaking records in the steady march of a warming climate. It’s been warmer than at any time in recorded history and was likely warmer than any other time in 125,000 years, an analysis by Climate Central concluded. The Copernicus Climate Change group said it’s “virtually certain” that 2023 will be the hottest year in recorded history. Why, this could almost be considered to be “climate change!”

Of course, it’s wonderful that some people kidnapped by Hamas are being released (traded actually). I hope the 3-year old girl who saw Hamas kill her parents are amongst them and she has family to take care of her.

Vol. 17, No. 05 – Nov 29 – Dec 12, 2023 – Forever Homes Wanted

Hi: I’m Sasha, a sweet older Labrador / Pit Bull mix who enjoys going on leisurely short walks. I was adopted years ago into what I thought was my forever home, but sadly, through no fault of my own I am back at CARL waiting once again for a family to call my own. I’m thankful CARL has a lifetime commitment to all of their dogs and welcomed me back with open arms.

I don’t pull much on leash and I don’t seem to care about the other dogs. I like to hang out in the grass and be around people. I’d really love to spend my golden years in a warm cozy home loved by people.

I know people will pass me by because I’m an older gal, but I hope you’ll put in an application to come and meet me. I deserve to be in a loving home as much as the younger dogs do.

The Festival of the Lights, Chanukah

Every year Jewish people around the world celebrate the holiday of Chanukah, the Festival of Lights. Chanukah begins on the 25th day of the Hebrew month of Kislev, but the starting date on the western calendar varies from year to year. This year it will start on sundown on Dec. 7 and end on Dec.15.

In the land of Judea there was a mean (boo) Syrian king, Antiochus. The king ordered the Jewish people to reject their God, their religion, their customs and their beliefs and to worship the Greek gods. There were some who did as they were told, but many refused. One who refused was Judah Maccabee(hooray).

Judah and his four brothers formed an army and after 3 years of fighting, the Maccabees were finally successful in driving the Syrians out of Israel and reclaimed the Temple in Jerusalem.

When Judah and his followers finished cleaning the temple, they wished to light the eternal light, known as the N’er Tamid, which is present in every Jewish house of worship. Only a tiny jug of oil was found with only enough for a single day. The oil lamp was filled and lit. Then a miracle occurred as the tiny amount of oil stayed lit not for one day, but for 8 days.

Jews celebrate Chanukah to mark the victory over the Syrians and the rededication of the Jerusalem Temple. The Festival of the Lights, Chanukah, lasts for eight days to commemorate this miracle of the oil. The menorah candles are lit to celebrate the 8 days that the oil stayed lit.

The spellings of Chanukah has caused some confusion. Part of the reason for this confusion may be due to the fact there is no exact English translation of the Hebrew word for Chanukah. So, to help clear up some of the confusion here are just a few of the different spellings one might encounter. They all celebrate the holiday.

Chanukah, Chanukkah, Hanuka, Hanukah , Hannukah ,Hanukkah. In the United States it is most common to use the spelling Chanukah.

Candlelight Remembrance Service

Participants in services included: Dr. Paul Lenderman-Spiritual Counselor, Raquel Jensen-Spiritual Counselor,  Hospice Physicians Dr. Lisa Deihl Rajala, and Dr. William Rajala, Marianne Cody Administrator, Susan Derby-Social Worker, and Michael Boyko

On the evening of November 9, greater Ventura again gathered as the Joseph P. Reardon Funeral Home & Cremation Service on Main St. as it opened its doors for the ninth annual Candlelight Remembrance Service. The caring professionals of Assisted Hospice of Ventura hosted the ceremonies.

This notable evening is for any individual who has experienced a loss and is looking to honor their loved one(s) in a particularly special way.  We gather, reflect, give tribute with poems and music and finally recite our loved one’s names during our candle service.

“The turn out for nights like tonight really surprises me” says Michael Boyko, Funeral Director and owner of the funeral home.  “It’s just a sign to me that our community really needs this.  The last several years haven’t been easy and we’re proud to invite all to gather for this ceremony.  It doesn’t matter who you’ve lost, or when, or where, all are welcome.”

Boat Fire at Portside Ventura Harbor

Photos by Nella Nelson

Apparently, because of fear of fuel on board becoming a major fire, when an overheating battery starting smoking in a boat anchored at Portside Ventura Harbor fire fighters from several cities came to make sure it didn’t spread. Perhaps a bit of an overreaction.

Ventura Fire Units Respond to Garage Fire

On November 27, at 7:45am, Ventura fire units were dispatched to a reported garage fire with extension into the residence in the 1600 Block of Ventura Ave. Firefighters arrived within 4 minutes of dispatch and found a single story/multi family home with heavy fire and smoke showing from the garage and the attached homes.

The Santa Ana winds played a critical role in the rapid spread of the fire into the structures and immediately threatened multiple homes and vehicles directly adjacent. Firefighters extinguished the fire with a coordinated effort of vertical and horizontal ventilation to keep the fire from spreading throughout the structures.

The fire was controlled 30 minutes after initial dispatch, and the house was confirmed to have no victims inside. In order to control the incident, Ventura City Fire units were assisted by: Ventura Police Department, Oxnard Fire Department, American Medical Response, as well as Ventura County Fire Department.
