Help collect school supplies for kids with cancer

The NALA hosts inaugural back-to-school donation drive to benefit the Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation and to help families that have children battling cancer.

The NALA, a national marketing agency headquartered in Ventura, is spearheading a back-to-school donation drive for the Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation (TBCF), a nonprofit 501(C)(3) organization providing financial and emotional support to families of children with cancer living in Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Obispo counties.

“We love helping the children and families through our partnership with Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation and welcome the community to join in with us. So many of us are buying supplies for our children right now and if you can just pick up that extra pack of glue sticks or another box of crayons”, said Tiffani Tendell, Vice President – Communications and Business Development at the NALA.

Donated items can be dropped off at the NALA’s headquarters, 1891 Goodyear Ave., Suite 620, Ventura, , now until Monday, August 27. Needed items include school supplies such as backpacks, erasers, notebooks, binders, crayons, pencils, pens, colored pencils and glue.

“We are so appreciative for the NALA’s community support. Their school supply collection for our families battling cancer will be instrumental in aiding their transition back to school after treatment. We cannot thank them enough,” stated Lindsey Leonard, Executive Director of Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation.

In addition to helping families during the holidays or at special times during the year with items such as holiday presents, canned food at Thanksgiving or Easter baskets, TBCF also helps defray costs that are often overlooked. These include monthly bills (rent/mortgage, utilities, etc.), automobile and related transportation costs, and other similar expenses, as parents usually have to take time off work or quit their jobs to spend quality time caring for their child in the hospital during their treatment.

Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation provides emotional, educational and financial assistance to families living in the Tri-County Region that have a child with cancer. The vision of Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation is to be the lead agency to instill resilience in families experiencing pediatric cancer. It provides programs that allow parents to be supported and to know they are not alone. New Recycle Coach App Helps Ventura Residents Maximize Waste Diversion

Ventura residents can now easily reduce their household waste and become even better recyclers with Recycle Coach, an easy-to-use mobile app designed to take the guesswork out of recycling.  Citizens can quickly access local disposal information for thousands of household items by downloading the free app at the iTunes App Store and Google Play.

The City of Ventura offers a variety of convenient ways to recycle, such as curbside collection in the blue bin, free monthly Household Hazardous Waste events, authorized drop-off locations, quarterly community cleanup events for bulky items and shredding, and certified collection centers. Recycle Coach makes these waste reduction resources and other important information, right at users’ fingertips to improve recycling and diversion.

Outreach and education are key to improve recycling,” said Deputy Mayor Matt LaVere. “This is another tool that will help our residents and businesses become greater stewards of the environment.”

Recycle Coach helps residents:

  • Know when to put out recyclables and solid waste for curbside collection
  • Receive collection reminders and real-time updates on potential service disruptions such as during holidays and emergencies
  • Access useful recycling tips, tricks and tools to become recycling experts with local disposal information and collection requirements for common and uncommon items
  • Use the problem-reporting tool, equipped with geolocation, to notify municipal customer services about issues like missed collections

Residents can access Recycle Coach from their desktop computers, mobile devices, or through digital assistants like Amazon Alexa and Google Home.

Vol. 11, No. 23 – Aug 15 – Aug 28, 2018 – Police Reports

by Cindy Summers

Police reports are provided to us by the Ventura  Police Department and are not the opinions of  the Ventura Breeze. All suspects mentioned  are assumed to be innocent until proven guilty  in a court of law.

Do you know this crook?

Robbery, Theft

On August 4, at approximately 3:15pm, the Ventura Police Command Center received a 911 call of a Robbery that had just occurred at the Lowe’s shopping center. As officers arrived, they were informed that as the suspect was leaving the store he activated the store security system. A store employee went to contact the suspect and when he did the suspect brandished a knife to the employee. The employee smartly allowed the suspect to leave the store and called the police department.

During a search of the area, witnesses told officers that the suspect was last seen in the parking lot of Pacific View Mall. Officers searched the parking lot however they were unable to locate the suspect. The officers contacted Mall security to see if their security cameras had recorded the suspect in the area. Mall security officers informed the officers that the suspect had committed a theft from Target . They said the suspect was last seen running from Target.

At approximately 5:30pm, the Ventura Police Command Center received a 911 call of the same suspect attempting to enter occupied vehicles in the intersection of Mills and Maple. The driver of one of the vehicles pulled over while calling 911 and the suspect began to approach him. The driver asked the suspect what was going on and the suspect threw one of the items stolen from Lowes at the driver and then brandished a knife. The suspect then ran away. A search of the area including the use of a K9 was unsuccessful.

Arson Arrest

On July 18, at approximately 10:30am, the Ventura Fire Department responded to a structure fire at a residence in the 7000 block of Brannan Street. Their investigation determined the cause of the fire was arson. Ventura Police Major Crime’s detectives assisted with the investigation and determined 60 year old Ventura resident Katherine Britigan was responsible for starting the fire. On July 26, at 5pm, patrol officers located Britigan and she was taken into custody. At the conclusion of the investigation, she was booked into Ventura County Jail on the felony charge of arson.

Indecent Exposure and Parole Violation Arrest

On July 27, at approximately 5:45pm, officers responded to a call regarding a male committing lewd conduct adjacent to the businesses in the 1100 block of South Victoria Avenue. The suspect had fled prior to officers arrival, and after a searching the area, the officers were unable to locate the suspect.

At approximately 7:45pm, the Ventura Police Communications Center received information that a parolee, 51 year old vagrant Steven Perry, had just cut off his ankle monitor in the 1400 block of South Victoria Avenue. Officers checked the area and located Perry and took him into custody for the parole violation of removing the ankle monitor. Perry, who is on parole for Indecent Exposure, matched the description of the suspect from the earlier lewd conduct call in the 1100 block of South Victoria Avenue. At the conclusion of the investigation, officers determined he was the suspect from the earlier incident. He was booked into Ventura County Jail on the charges of Indecent Exposure and a Parole Violation.

Brandishing an Imitation Firearm, Violently Resisting Officers, Battery on a Police K9 and Possession of Methamphetamine Arrest

On August 8, at approximately 11:45pm, a witness called and reported a disturbance in the 2100 block of Harbor Blvd. The suspect was yelling at passing vehicles and people in the area. When the first officer arrived, they found the suspect, 35 year old Ventura resident Guadalupe Juarez Lopez, and discovered she was holding a handgun. She was waiving and brandishing the gun and was uncooperative with the officers verbal instructions. Additional officers arrived on scene and contained the suspect in a parking lot.

The suspect retreated from officers and hid near a large propane tank in the parking lot and remained uncooperative with officers as they attempted to get her to drop the hand gun. After 20 minutes of talking with the suspect, she still refused to disarm, and she threatened to shoot the nearby propane tank. At that point, officers used a less lethal projectile in an attempt to disarm the suspect and prevent her from shooting the propane tank. The K9 was also deployed. The less lethal rounds were effective, causing the suspect to fall to the ground. The K9 then apprehended the suspect, and she began battering the K9. After briefly fighting and resisting the K9, the suspect was taken into custody. As officers were approaching the suspect during the K9 apprehension, they discovered the hand gun she was holding was a BB gun.

The suspect sustained minor injuries during the incident. After she was medically cleared at the Ventura County Medical Center, she was booked into Ventura County Jail on the charges of Brandishing an Imitation Firearm, Violently Resisting Officers, Battery on a Police K9 and Possession of Methamphetamine.

Fatal Hit and Run Investigation

On August 10, at 8:37 pm, the Ventura Police Command Center received a call of a hit and run collision that just occurred at Ventura Ave and Prospect. As officers arrived on scene, they learned from witnesses that the victim Michael Pedigo, walked between two parked cars and into the northbound lane of traffic on Ventura Avenue. A white four-door vehicle driving northbound struck Pedigo and immediately pulled over to the side of the road. Without checking on the well being of Pedigo, the driver and car left the scene. Paramedics from Ventura City Fire and AMR who also responded administered first aid to Mr. Pedigo, and transported him to VCMC.

Pedigo succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. This is an ongoing investigation, and anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the investigating officer Corporal Al Gomez at 805-339-4474.

Property tax relief available for those impacted by fires

If your property has been damaged by the recent fires, you may be eligible for property tax relief. In many cases, the damaged property can be reappraised in its current condition, with some taxes refunded to the property owner. Once rebuilt, the property’s pre damaged value will be restored.

To qualify for property tax relief, you must file a claim with your county assessors’ office within 12 months from the date of damage or destruction. The loss estimate must be at least $10,000 of current market value to qualify.

Owners of eligible property may also apply for deferral of the next property tax installment on the regular secured roll or tax payments on the supplemental roll, without penalties or interest. The disaster must be the result of a Governor-proclaimed state of emergency. When a timely claim for deferral is filed, the next property tax installment payment is deferred without penalty or interest until the county assessor has reassessed the property and a corrected tax bill has been sent to the property owner.

For further information on property tax disaster relief, please see go to

On Tuesday August 7, at Fire Station 1, located at 717 N. Ventura Ave. the Ventura City Fire Department presented the official launch of Medic Engine 7 (ME7), the Department’s new 40-hour per week Roving All-Hazards Fire Engine Company.

ME7 is designed provide additional resources during peak incident hours and will be available to respond to all types of emergencies, provide station coverage, improve departmental training opportunities, and provide additional community risk reduction to the citizens of Ventura. Red Cross urgently needs blood donations before summer ends

As summer winds down, the American Red Cross urges individuals to give blood and platelets now and help end an emergency summer blood shortage that began last month.

A critical need remains as many regular donors delay giving to take final summer vacations and prepare for school to start. To ensure lifesaving treatments remain available for patients in the coming weeks, donations are needed now, especially type O.

In thanks for helping at this urgent time, all those who come to donate blood or platelets through Aug. 30, 2018, will receive a $5 Amazon.com Gift Card via email. (Restrictions apply; see amazon.com/gc-legal. More information and details are available at RedCrossBlood.org/Together.)

Make an appointment to donate blood by downloading the free American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Those who donated blood earlier this summer may be eligible to give again. Blood can be safely given every 56 days, and Power Red donations can be given every 16 weeks.

Upcoming blood donation opportunities in Ventura.

8/21/2018: 11:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., Knights of Columbus, 36 S. Figueroa St.
8/27/2018: 8 a.m. – 8 p.m., Ventura College, 4667 Telegraph Road

Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information.

Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App.

Another way to support the lifesaving mission of the American Red Cross is to become a volunteer transportation specialist and deliver lifesaving blood products to local area hospitals. Volunteer transportation specialists play a very important role in ensuring an ample blood supply for patients in need by transporting blood and blood products. For more information and to apply for a volunteer transportation specialist position, visit rdcrss.org/driver.
