Vol. 15, No. 22 – July 27 – Aug 9, 2022 – Ventura Music Scene

The traditional free concert to the community once again opens the Ventura Music Festival (VMF) in Mission Park and this year it features Adaawe. The international women of voice and drum perform a global fusion of African rhythm, thrilling harmony, and world soul to uplift the spirt, celebrate diversity, and unite humanity. Low-back chairs are allowed, but honestly, I’m thinking we’ll be up and dancing for most of their performance which starts at 5:30 pm. Why not make it a family event and bring a blanket, picnic dinner while enjoying the sounds of Adaawe.

Following the Wednesday free performance, there will be six ticketed VMF performances held at the Ventura College Performing Arts Theater over the next two weekends featuring We Banjo 3, Django Festival Allstars, Sean Chen, the Moanin’ Frogs, Veronica Swift and The Crossing. To secure tickets, go to VenturaMusicFestival.org.
The Ventura County Fair returns this summer with a fine line up of musical entertainment both on the Station Stage featuring local artists, and the Grandstand Stage featuring national touring acts. It’s such a treat knowing all shows are included in the price of admission. By the way, did you know the fair is free for those five and younger and for those 100 or older? For the rest of us, it’s only $15 for adults; $10 kids 6-12; seniors 65 and older $10.

Check out VenturaRocks.com for the Station Stage lineup. Here is the Grandstand Stage list of acts:
Wednesday, 8/3: Martina McBride
Thursday, 8/4: KC & the Sunshine Band
Friday, 8/5: The All-American Rejects
Saturday, 8/6: Blue Oyster Cult
Sunday, 8/7: Dia de la Familia concert
Monday, 8/8: The Beach Boys
Tuesday, 8/9: Clay Walker
Wednesday, 8/10: Cheap Trick

New shows added for the Majestic Ventura Theater include Marcus Mumford and Danielle Ponder on Tuesday, October 4, GWAR on Saturday, October 8; Black Flag on Saturday, October 29, Gogol Bordello on Saturday, November 5, and Tegan and Sara on Friday, November 11.

The Hueneme Beach Festival falls over the last weekend of August (27- 28; 11 – 7 pm) with free admission. Do note that parking is $10 but BikeVentura will be hosting a free bike valet, so if you can, ride your bike there. There will be music on two stages featuring New Orleans Suspects, Twisted Gypsy, Taylor Sackson, CRV, Marachi Camarillo, Oliva Willhite, and Morie & the Heavy Hitters on Saturday. And then on Sunday, it’s Nth Power, Beebs & Money Makers, the Phantom Blues Band, Sade, the Hand me Down Band, Juano & Friends, and the Cousins.

Spencer Mackenzie Throwdown Cornhole Festival will be held at Surfer’s Point Live (Ventura Fairgrounds parking lot) over the last weekend of August. The acts scheduled to perform this year are Sunny Ledfurd, Mandex, A.D.D., Rey Fresco and Morie & the Heavy Hitters. This is a ticketed event at $25 a day, or $40 for 3-day pass.

The New West Symphony announced their 2022/2023 Masterpiece Series Season recently where performances will be held Saturday evenings at the Thousand Oaks Performing Arts Center and with Sunday matinees in Camarillo at the Rancho Campana Performing Arts Center. It all kicks off with their Winter Spectacular starring Sam Harris in December 2022 and will run through next November 2023 with a production of “Beethoven to Brubeck.” You can download their brochure at NewWestSymphony.org.

If you enjoy the punk end of the music spectrum, then you won’t want to miss NardFest on August 6, at the Oceanview Pavilion Performing Arts Theater in Port Hueneme. Bands on the bill include Head Heat, Ill Repute, Stalag 13, Dr. Know, False Confession, iDecline, Civil Conflict, Romper and Boilerman. The event runs 3 – 11 pm; tickets are only $20.

The Ojai Valley Land Conservancy benefit concert runs two days July 30-31 from 2-9 pm at the Libbey Bowl featuring Grateful Shred headlining both days. Leading up to the main act: Saturday, Cayucas, Gifted & Blessed, Chuck & Luisa, Barbarelle and on Sunday, Nate Mercereau, Carlos Nino, Dan Horne, Service Human, Shelley Burgon, Melody Bird and Barbarelle. Ticket information can be found at OVLC.org/shred.

Quick Notes:
Vincenzo Giammanco, CEO and founder of Boots and Brews confirmed there will in fact be two Boots and Brews for Ventura this year with Cole Swindell on August 20 and Tim McGraw on October 14 (tickets for both are on sale at BootsAndBrews.com); Tony’s Pizzaria continues with the Thursday free reggae shows with Morie & the Heavy Hitters on Thursday, July 28; Myst plays the Heritage Square Summer Concert Series on Friday, July 29 and it’s Soul Machine on Friday, August 5; Jerry’s Middle Finger plays the Ventura Music Hall on Friday, July 19; Hip Hop Mindset at the Oceanview Pavilion Performing Arts Theater on Saturday, July 30; Pedals & Pints Brewing Company and Tarantula Hill Brewing Company in Thousand Oaks are presenting the inaugural Down the Rabbit Hole Festival of Music and Beer on Saturday, July 30; Donna Lynn Caskey will open for the Dennis and Laura Show at Namba on Saturday, July 30; Poseidon Brewing will be celebrating their 8th anniversary over the weekend of 8/12-8/14; it’s Third Eye Blind at the Ventura Theater on Saturday, August 6; and finally, the Oxnard Salsa Festival is postponed for yet another year (fingers crossed for 2023);

Breeze

Dogs are not allowed on most beaches in the city of Ventura, yet every day there are dozens of dogs running loose with no consequences. Even on the few small sections of city owned beach where dogs are allowed, dogs must be on a leash at all times. I’ve contacted State Beach officials and Animal Control and they refuse to take any action in enforcing these laws.  Sometimes lifeguards try to enforce the law, but then get verbally abused by the law breakers.  How bad does this problem have to get before anyone does something about this?  Maybe after a big dog attacks and kills another small dog, or maims a young child?

People are coming from all parts of Ventura and beyond to let their dogs run wild on the beach. And with basically unlimited and unregulated vacation rentals all over Pierpont and the rest of Ventura, we have multitudes of out-of-town tourists also bringing their dogs to the beaches.

This is not just a weekend occurrence, it’s seven days a week, from dawn to sunset. There are no more shore birds from Marina Park to the State Beach, the dogs have chased them all away.  I urge you to take a trip to the Pierpont beaches and see what’s happening for yourself.

It would be great to see signs put up on all the beaches with the rules and fines clearly stated for all to see.  Lifeguards can put them up along the shore in the mornings, and permanent signs can be posted at the end of San Pedro, Seaward, New Bedford, Martha’s Vineyard, and Greenock Lanes.  Give people a week to comply, and then start writing tickets and/or impounding animals.

Hello Sheldon and Team,

I am reaching out in response to your request in the Opinion/Editorial page in the June 15 to June 28, 2022 issue of the Ventura Breeze for an answer from the Bible regarding its viewpoint on Abortion and Birth control. Please refer to the two attached links where these topics and the Bible principles involved are discussed in detail.

Personally, I love the scripture at Psalms 139:13-16 in which David describes in poetic and beautiful terms how wondrous it was that he was seen by his Creator, when as an embryo in his mothers womb. He had all his parts were down in writing (DNA)! That genetic code is transferred from the parents at conception and thus a new life begins to form. Thank you for the opportunity to share!

Warmest Regards, Mrs. Kristina Kline

In regards to the following comment I read in the July 13-July 26, 2022 edition of Ventura Breeze, “Pro Life isn’t even Pro Birth at the root, it’s Anti Sex…”, I would agree that loosely held morals is the root cause or the “Elephant in the Room” that very few people want to address. I also believe that careless, or casual sex outside of the sanctuary of ordained marriage has resulted in the millions of abortions that have been executed in our country.

Dear Editor,

I am writing to implore the Ventura City Council not to approve a marijuana store near Ventura High School.

I advise the Ventura City Council not to approve any marijuana stores anywhere in the city, but especially not near a school, bus depot, or other sensitive locations that are used by the sober public.

Again, I strongly caution against all members of the Ventura City Council from approving any marijuana store, anywhere in the city. But approving a marijuana store that is so close to Ventura High….well, it would be a shameful legacy that all members of the Council would have to live with for the rest of their lives.

Respectfully,
Nik Schiffmann

SEEAG reaches over 15,000 students and community members

Students for Eco-Education and Agriculture (SEEAG), a nonprofit organization that aims to help young students and the community understand the farm origins of their food and the importance of local agriculture, spread its message to more than 15,000 students and community members in 2021.

“One of SEEAG’s goals is for the public to better appreciate our local farmers, ranchers and farmworkers who grow the food we eat,” says Mary Maranville, SEEAG founder and CEO. “The food supply chain from farms to our tables is a journey we don’t often think about, but we should.”

SEEAG’s Farm Lab at Petty Ranch in Saticoy welcomed over 1,600 second graders, including low-income, Title 1 students, for a hands-on farm experience. “In addition to the wonderful experiential education benefits that Farm Lab gives students,” says Maranville, “it also gets kids outside off their devices and tech, which improves their mental health and wellbeing.”

Another 1,300 students in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties took part in SEEAG’s Child Wellness Initiative designed to educate and inspire children to eat healthy by adding locally-grown fruits and vegetables to their diet. Each student received a bag of fresh produce, recipes and other educational material. Another 200 middle and high school students attended SEEAG’s STEM Career Pathways in Agriculture presentations to learn about technical careers in the industry.

“SEEAG wants to cultivate the next generation of agricultural ambassadors and farmland stewards,” says Maranville. “We’re hoping that learning about the importance of eating fresh fruits and vegetables will create life-long healthy eating habits. We did much of our instruction remotely during the first part of 2021. We were able to return to in-classroom instruction in October.”

After a year off because of the pandemic, SEEAG held its Ventura County Farm Day and Santa Barbara County Farm Day in 2021. More than 12,000 people attended, visiting growers and other agricultural sites to see firsthand how food is grown, harvested and transported to local markets. Visitors experienced a day of agricultural activities, farm tours, tastings, and fruit and produce giveaways.

“SEEAG was able to engage with a large number of kids and adults even during a challenging year,” says Maranville. “We are currently expanding our STEM Career Pathways in Ag outreach to middle and high school students throughout Ventura and Santa Barbara counties and our Ventura County Child Wellness and Santa Barbara County Child Wellness elementary school presentations.”

All SEEAG programs are free to schools and participants. It provides free bus transportation for students attending SEEAG’s Farm Lab.

Major 2021 donors included Haas Automotive Foundation, Gill’s Onions, Sprout’s, Ed and Jeanne Woods Family Foundation and Wood-Claeyssens Foundation.

VUSD appoints new superintendent

Dr. Castro brings 25 years of educational service to his new office.

Following an internal search and selection process, the Ventura Unified School District (VUSD) Board of Education has appointed Dr. Antonio Castro as the new VUSD Superintendent. Dr. Castro will begin his new role on August 1, 2022, as Dr. Roger Rice transitions into his previously announced retirement.

“We are so fortunate that Dr. Castro will be leading the VUSD team. His unique, well-rounded perspective provides him with the ability to see everyone and truly understand what it takes to make our District a success. He is not one to take anything for granted, especially not the people who make up our community,” stated Sabrena Rodriguez, Board President. “We are thrilled to have such a special leader who we believe will inspire our students, support our team, and work collaboratively with our families and community.”

A dedicated public servant, Dr. Castro brings 25 years of educational service with him to his new office. Dr. Castro has served in many roles throughout his career. Those roles include a general and special education teacher, assistant principal, principal, director of special education and student support services, associate superintendent of educational services at the Ventura County Office of Education, and most recently has been serving as the VUSD Assistant Superintendent, Educational Services since April of 2021.

During his tenure with VUSD, Dr. Castro has contributed significantly, including being responsible for implementing the Local Control Accountability Plan.

“As we progress through this next COVID stage, it is essential that we reestablish a sense of belonging. I am dedicated to cultivating and investing in practices that promote trusting relationships throughout the District. It is my goal that through a shared vision for students, families, and staff, we will become a stronger community. I am humbled by the opportunity to lead this incredible District in its next phase of success,” stated Dr. Castro.

Dr. Castro leads a purpose-driven life in every aspect of his personal and professional identity. Beyond his work in education, Dr. Castro has given back extensively to the Ventura County community serving organizations such as AYSO, Moorpark City Council, Moorpark College Foundation, Ventura County United Way, and as a mentor to many inside and outside of education. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Arizona State University and his Master’s and Doctorate from California Lutheran University.

“I am honored to be a part of the Ventura Unified School District and look forward to leading the VUSD’s dynamic staff with the support of our extended community. Ventura is a beautiful area with a rich history, and these deep roots serve as a strong foundation for our future growth,” stated Dr. Castro.

The Board of Trustees would like to thank District staff, students, parents/guardians, and community members for providing valuable input through surveys and interview panels that provided us with a clear understanding of the leadership characteristics and skills desired in the next Superintendent. In addition to the Board reviewing applications and conducting extensive interviews, the VUSD Board made its decision based on the input gathered from all key stakeholder groups.
