Congresswoman Julia Brownley (CA-26) and Ventura Mayor Cheryl Heitmann will tour the VenturaWaterPure Demonstration Facility (located at 1400 Spinnaker Dr.-Ventura Water Reclamation Facility) on Thursday, October 15. Ventura Water, in partnership with the Water Research Foundation, is utilizing the demonstration facility to; generate essential research, better inform regulators on how to move from indirect potable reuse to potable reuse blending, and to help create a secure water future for the City of Ventura. Congresswoman Brownley says, “I look forward to visiting the VenturaWaterPure Potable Reuse Facility, and learning more about how this facility will meet the needs of local water users. As we look for solutions to the drought, California must embrace innovative ideas, like water reuse and recycling, which are playing an increasing role in meeting our unprecedented water challenges.”

Ohana Pet Hospital welcomes two new vets
Dr. Tam and Dr. Asato will provide for more care for animal patients
Ohana Pet Hospital expands its veterinary professional team, to support the health and well-being of its growing family of patients, by welcoming Dr. Christina Tam and Dr. Kayla Asato to the Ohana family. Dr. Tam will join Dr. Jennifer Kelly to serve the urgent care needs of the hospital’s existing patients while Dr. Asato will provide general practice services.
Dr. Christina Tam is a native southern Californian, originally from the San Gabriel Valley. In 2008, she graduated from the University of California–San Diego with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Biochemistry and Cell Biology and obtained her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine at the University of California–Davis in 2014. Dr. Tam enjoys running, camping, biking, traveling, and any activity that takes her outdoors and around the world.
Dr. Kayla Asato was born and raised in Kaneohe, Hawai’i. In 2010, she earned her undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences from the University of California–Davis and continued her education at UC Davis Veterinary School where she earned her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 2014.
“We feel blessed that this community has embraced Ohana Pet Hospital with such open arms, trusting us with their pets,” said Dr. Janis Shinkawa, Medical Director of Ohana Pet Hospital. “It is our responsibility to ensure we provide the best care and that means expanding our professional veterinary staff to accommodate growing patient needs. Cassandra Tondro hosts first-ever Ventura Open Art Studio event October 17th
Artist Cassandra Tondro hosts her first-ever Ventura Open Art Studio event on Saturday, October 17th from 4-6pm. Tondro moved to Ventura in 2014, and built a dream studio behind her home on the East End of the city.
Tondro is known for her bright and colorful abstract paintings created using leftover house paint that she rescues from recycling centers.
The Open Art Studio will feature a display of Tondro’s latest paintings from her “Picture This” series as well as new work from her popular “Organic Series.” Her artwork can be seen on her website at www.tondro.com.

Duane Simshauser canvas in permanent Ventura’s Municipal Art Collection
This painting, acrylic on canvas by Duane Simshauser can be seen in the permanent Ventura’s Municipal Art Collection in the corridors of the Ventura City Hall. The Municipal Art Acquisition Program was established in May, 1999. Simshauser has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Eastern Washington University. Ventura County Potters’ Guild presents Harry Poliak’s Clay Journey at the Ventura Avenue Adult Center 550 N Ventura Avenue, Monday, October 26, doors open at 7 pm, program begins at 7:30 pm 648-3035
Harry Poliak was born in 1952 and grew up in South Africa during the Apartheid regime. As a child, the need to travel into the inner recess of his mind and connect to creativity abounded. Influenced by his African roots, he spent many moments entering the realm of ancient art fed by Africa’s multicultural identities. Poliak moved to Canada in 1977 where he began replanting forests and where he trained and worked as a cabinetmaker. In 1985 he married a potter. By 1990 he had shifted his focus primarily to clay and started the journey as a production potter making both functional and sculptural ware. Currently Poliak’s work is sculptural. In 2000 he relocated to the USA where he pursued opportunities to work in community arts, education and youth development and continue his journey with clay. Poliak will be doing a hand building demonstration of his working process.

Focus on the Masters kicks off its 2015-16 Artist Spotlight season on Nov. 7 in the Screening Room of Brooks Institute in Ventura. The Spotlight interview will feature the inkspots. Founder Virginia Furmanski will be joined by Bay Hallowell and Inés Monguió in a panel discussion led by Dr. Judy Larson. The inkspots were formed in 2007 by Virginia who explains that the group is greater than the sum of its parts. “We take classes together. We learn new techniques.”
Four Ventura artists interested in printmaking formed the original inkspots group in 2007 by pooling their resources and creating a printmaking studio at the Sea Breeze Gallery in Ventura. The inkspots of San Buenaventura are a group of artists dedicated to creating original prints using a variety of techniques including etching, collagraph, linocut, monoprint, monotype, woodblock, and digital manipulation.
Spotlight interviews are free to FOTM Members, $10 for general public, $5 students and seniors.
Immediately following the interview guests will gather at 643 A Project Space for the AfterGLOW Fundraising Event. Paid reservations are required for the AfterGLOW: $25 for FOTM members and $35 for non-members. An exhibit of works by inkspots artists will run from November 6 through December 19 at 643 A Project Space.

StoryFest well attended in spite of the high temperature

On Saturday, October 10 the ninth annual StoryFest was held in the beautiful park area at Ventura Unified School District Education Service Center located on Stanley Ave. This free event featured story-telling, book giveaways, musical activities, Truckfest (an opportunity for children to get up close and touch trucks and a fire engine and blow horns), and plenty of fun.
Local “celebrity” readers and children’s entertainment were all showcased in this Ventura Neighborhood for Learning (VNfL) program where young children are invited to fill their StoryFest passports by visiting six story tents and booths featuring interactive art, music, science, and physical activities. Those attending heard community celebrities read books throughout the day in each of the tents some of the tents were “pets&animals, art&music and families&home.”Every child who visited all of the story tents received a free book. And 2 for one books were on sale all day.
Ventura Breeze publisher Sheldon was one of the “celebrity” readers and was aided by Jasmine Casey, from Tri-County GLAD who signed for the kids and then taught them some signing.
