Cabrillo Music Theatre brings stories of miracles
By Jim Spencer and Shirley Lorraine

Created in the early 1970s, formally incorporated in 1988 and the resident musical theatre company at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza since 1994, the Cabrillo Music Theatre (CMT) has been presenting big Broadway musicals in Ventura County for over 40 years.

So, many were deeply concerned when the CMT announced it was suspending production of its next season of shows.

Happily, CMT revealed this week that changed circumstances have permitted it to cancel its prior action.  CMT Board Chair Bart Leininger explained the genesis for the turnaround came from intensive and creative Board action, operational restructuring, cooperation from the City of Thousand Oaks and anonymous financial support.

As a result, CMT will be proceeding full-tilt with its block buster, three show season for 2016-17.

This proves that miracles do happen – a messaged mirrored in CMT’s current delightful musical, Children of Eden. It plays through Sunday, April 17, 2016 in the Kavli Auditorium at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza.

With words and music by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin, Godspell) and a script by John Caird (Les Miserables co-director), Children of Eden emphasizes the dynamics among the family members in the  Biblical stories of Adam and Eve (Act 1) and Noah, the Arc builder (Act 2).

Director Lewis Wilkenfeld, who is also CMT’s Artist Director, and his creative team pull out all the stops to fill the stage to overflowing with rich visual images, fresh and delightful dance numbers and exceptional production values, including a live orchestra.

In addition to the marvelous voices of the principal leads, Norman Large, Misty Cotton and Kevin McMahon, a standout vocal performance is turned in by Ryan J. Driscoll in the dual roles of Cain and Noah’s son, Japheth. The lead storytellers, Katie Porter and Kenneth Mosley, are also on the roster of vocally memorable cast members.

The adult ensemble boasts depth, experience and, like a good cup of coffee, a superb blend. And, as if back-up is needed, there is an off stage choir.

One of the joys of the piece is the reoccurring appearances of some 20 members from CMT’s famous youth outreach programs – the Kabrillo Kids (students 8-14) and the Cabrillo Teen Project. Participants receive free instruction in the various theater arts, plus opportunities to perform with professional actors. In this show there is a contingent over 20 members strong from the programs. Joyfully they sing, they dance, and they portray all sorts of animals – from penguins to snails, and big cats to elephants.

Undergirding the successful efforts of the entire cast, which numbers about 50, are the unsung costume designers, dressers, wardrobe assistants, make-up artists and wig wranglers.

The result is an opportunity to experience a live Broadway musical presented with Cabrillo Music Theatre’s trademark style and panache. A tradition that now promises to continue.

Performances of Children of Eden are Thursday at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, 2100 Thousand Oaks Blvd., Thousand Oaks. Tickets: $35-$75. Ticketmaster (800) 745-3000.

In welcoming the large gathering Board Member Jim Duran, and Lead Pastor of The River Community Church in Ventura stated “In October of last year the City Center brought awareness to Domestic Violence.  Through that event, we were able to raise $10,000 to designate one of our rooms specifically to domestic violence victims and survivors.  The Oxnard Monday Club ponied up $7,500 of the $10,000 raised.  We are thrilled to be  giving the keys to the Purple Room to a mother and her two children that are currently involved in a domestic violence situation. We are moving Alissa and her children, Isaiah and Noah into the City Center in order to keep them safe and get them on the road to recover and self-sufficiency.”

Said Charleen Morla, OMC Board Member “The Oxnard Monday Club is honored and blessed to be part of the City Center’s history in sponsoring The Purple Room, a room in honor of domestic violence survivors. Our members are excited to witness the progress of the lives who come will come into the Purple Room over the years to heal, recover and succeed. Thank you to The City Center staff and board on the amazing job they do in serving these families and to the new family of The Purple Room. Welcome Home”.

Members of the Filipino Community of Ventura County, Inc.(FCVCI) partnered with the Oxnard Monday Club  to paint the Purple Room.

Stephanie Caldwell Ventura Chamber President & CEO stated “As Ventura’s only transitional housing center that does not receive government funding, the City Center is changing lives and making a difference every day.”

“Each resident who walks through the doors of the City Center will be touched in ways that many of us will never understand.  On behalf of our 650 member companies and our 24 member Board of Directors, it is my honor to recognize the leadership of Jim Duran and his team at the City Center for the monumental work that you are doing.”

“Congratulations Jim on the opening of the Purple Room, this newest addition to the incredible wrap-around support and services that you provide for our community, with a specific focus on victims of domestic violence.  We are proud to have you as a part of the Ventura Chamber family and blessed to have you as a part of our community.”

In helping with the cutting Ventura Mayor Erik Nasarenko told the gathering “Last October, The City Center held a fundraiser and public awareness dinner to assist victims of domestic violence.  I, and a number of you in the audience this evening, attended that event, where $10,000 was raised, including a $7,500 donation from the Oxnard Monday Club.  Tonight marks the fulfillment of that collaborative effort as we dedicate “The Purple Room” to domestic violence victims and their families.  As many of you know, the City Center provides hope, opportunity and basic necessities to those in need of housing, with its children and adults staying in this former motel space anywhere between three months and two years.  Upon leaving the City Center, participants go out into the world with a savings account, a job, and a car.  More importantly, they graduate with resolve, strength and dignity.  It is a pleasure to join all of you in the cutting of the ribbon tonight, and my thanks on behalf of the City of Ventura to the City Center for its ongoing and successful efforts to positively transform the lives of Ventura residents.”

Amber Stevens, Director of Aquatics and Youth Programs at the Ventura Family YMCA who presented Isaiah and Noah with Y swimming lessons said “We’re going to make sure the kids are water safe and we’re going to get them free swim lessons.  The Y has also made a promise and that promise is to strengthen communities. And to help you in your next step, in the next chapter of your life, we’re giving you a six month membership to the Y. Where you can come, where the kids can swim, where you can work out, or they can be in the children’s area. And you guys can just have fun with us in our community.”

Also representing the YMCA were Amy Bailey Jurewicz, Executive Director at the Ventura Family YMCA and Alicia Cattoni, Marketing and Communication Director .

“Our Journey Home” documentary highlights need for public housing

Home gives us a sense of belonging and stability. It’s so much more than just a physical structure. Yet, so many people in the U.S. face housing instability and homelessness on a daily basis. A shocking 76% of Americans live paycheck-to-paycheck (Bankrate.com Survey 2013). They are just one accident or injury away from losing everything, including a place to call home.

To advocate for increased public housing assistance, ReThink: Why Housing Matters, an initiative to change the misperceptions surrounding public housing, has created a documentary film “Our Journey Home. The documentary, produced by Emmy-Award winning filmmakers, Stillmotion, and narrated by singer-songwriter, Jewel, follows three families supported by public housing and examines how their relationship to home has shaped them.

One such story featured in the film is of Ventura County resident, Rosalio Galaviz, whose family immigrated to the U.S. at a young age, in search of a better life. However, shortly after, Rosalio’s mother was left alone to raise five children on a minimum wage job. While public housing provided a safe and stable place for his family to live, Rosalio decided to become the change he wanted to see in his community and overcame his circumstances by enrolling in the Ventura Police Academy.

“Public housing offered us the tools in life to become successful,” says Galaviz in “Our Journey Home.” “If you want to see a change in the world, then you have to be that change in the world. A police officer can make that change.”

Rosalio is currently a police cadet in training and striving to give back to Ventura County, the place he calls home.

On Apr. 20 ReThink in partnership with the Housing Authority of the City of San Buenaventura will be hosting a public screening event for “Our Journey Home.” The screening will be followed by an invigorating panel discussion with notable members from housing authorities, the Ventura County police chief and Rosalio Galaviz.
