Ventura High Cougars Advance to First-Ever CIF-State Championship Bowl

Ventura High School made history Friday night, Dec. 5, defeating host Arroyo Grande 35–28 in the CIF-State Division 3AA Regional Final. The victory secured the Cougars’ first appearance in a CIF-State Championship Bowl in the program’s 102-year history, while also earning them an unprecedented 16th game of the season.

With the win, Ventura (13–2) moves on to face St. Ignatius College Preparatory (8–6) of San Francisco for the Division 3AA state title on Dec. 12. The game will be held at Fullerton Union High School in Orange County at 8 PM.

St. Ignatius advanced after a tight 17–13 win over Danville-Monte Vista in the Northern California regional. The Wildcats finished fifth in the rugged West Catholic Athletic League, home to programs such as Archbishop Riordan – defeated by St. Bonaventure each of the past two seasons – and St. Francis, which claimed the 2017 CIF-State Division 2A championship over Grace Brethren.

Ventura now stands one win away from a state crown in a season already marked by milestones.
