The “C” in CAPS is for Community Service

By Ventura Breeze Staff –

Celebrating 25 Years of Service

The CAPS Media Center continues to serve Ventura as a hub of activity for community groups and organizations utilizing the resources of the CAPS Media Center for productions, meetings, training, performances and more. Recently the Rotary Club of East Ventura toured the center and discovered the resources available to the community.

In addition to the training, equipment, soundstage, radio station, and editing bays, many of the Rotarians were interested in using the CAPS meeting room available for community groups. The conference room is set up for hybrid “zoom” meetings and has been used by the College Area Community Council, Ventura County Humane Society, 4H, Scouting leadership groups, and many others. Soon CAPS will host members of the Ventura Chamber of Commerce at the CAPS Center for a mixer and tour of the facility.

The CAPS Media Center is available for community service organizations to hold meetings and training sessions. To learn more and arrange a tour send an email to info@capsmedia.org.

25 Years of Service to Ventura

This year marks a major milestone in Ventura as Community Access Partners of San Buenaventura, better known as CAPS, celebrates 25 Years of serving our community. In 2000 a dedicated group of community-minded citizens in Ventura shared a common vision. They wanted to encourage civic engagement, provide access to information, and create a place for creative public expression and freedom of speech.

CAPS is unique as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit public access corporation. CAPS is not a division of Ventura City government services. CAPS belongs to the entire community and Ventura is the only community in the county with both a public access channel (channel 6) and an education and government access channel (channel 15).

The CAPS Media Center, located at 65 Day Road, was built in 2007 as a community partnership between the City, Ventura College and local cable companies. In the past 25 years the CAPS staff have trained hundreds of Venturans in the use of video cameras, editing systems and studio space, empowering them to produce their own programs. CAPS crews have created hundreds of video productions for nonprofit organizations, and government agencies in the county and more.

Plus CAPS has directed, recorded, broadcast and streamed thousands of hours of meetings at Ventura City Hall including city council, planning commission, community development meetings, and more.

Most recently, in 2024 CAPS crews produced more than 50 fee-for-service projects, including live coverage, and streaming of graduation ceremonies for Ventura College and all Ventura public high schools, plus special presentations for County Health, Ventura Regional Firesafe Council, the City Center and the Ventura Land Trust.

For the city government in 2024 CAPS projects included coverage of more than 150 hours of city meetings and nearly 90 informational videos including multiple episodes of Ventura Voices, community workshops for Surfer’s Point, the Westside Community Center, bike trail improvements, Pierpont safety updates, the police and fire public safety block party, multiple press conferences, and the Mayor’s State of the City.

While continuing to provide creative and programming services to Ventura, CAPS’ 25th Anniversary Celebration will include special events inviting the public to join in the festivities. Everyone at CAPS looks forward to celebrating with the people we serve every day throughout Ventura.
