The Brand New Fernery Opens at the Ventura Botanical Gardens

The Ventura Botanical Gardens (VBG) announces the opening of their striking new space for shade plants and seedlings called “The Fernery”. Architect Noah Greer worked with a volunteer committee of professionals to create this contemporary twist on a traditional lath house.

“The design addresses the dramatically sloping hillsides and the confluence of three pathways through the gardens that merge at the site,” shared Noah. He continues, “We envisioned engaging visitors not just up close, but from a distance. As you approach along the path, you glimpse the lifted eaves above the surrounding flora. Then, the hairpin turn takes you beneath the dramatically cantilevered roof. From the highest points in the garden, the roof reads as a single surface, warping in response to the dynamic topography.”

Developed to reduce sunlight by thirty percent, The Fernery facilitates shade loving plants and new propagations to thrive.

“This is an important expansion of our nursery space that enables VBG to protect threatened and endangered plants in our conservation programs through propagation,” adds Joe Cahill, Executive Director. “Visitors on education tours and at special events in The Fernery will get a behind the scenes experience of the core horticultural activities so important to the gardens.”

Linda and Sky Sylvers sponsored The Fernery as a legacy gift for the entire community. “We believe that through generous giving, we enhance the quality of life for ourselves, our families, and our community,” said Sky Sylvers. “We hope this inspires others to give generously to the Gardens.”

The Fernery kicks off on Thanksgiving weekend with a vibrant display of Poinsettias, honoring the history of this plant in Ventura, opening just in time for the holidays. Admission for the exhibit is $3 + general admission or membership. Children are free with an adult.
