Ventura Police officers arrested a man Sunday night after interrupting a sexual assault
at Kellogg Park on the Avenue. Officers responded after receiving a report of a woman screaming for help around 11 pm and discovered an assault in progress.
The suspect, identified as Jannier Urbina-Avila (32), fled but was quickly caught following a foot pursuit that lasted about one block. He was arrested and booked at the Ventura County Jail for multiple felony charges related to sexual assault. It appears the suspect was not known to the victim.
The victim received immediate medical attention and was connected with local services that provide support to survivors of sexual assault. “This was a horrifying situation that no one should have to face,” said Police Chief David Dickey. “Our officers’ quick response prevented further harm and ensured the victim received immediate support.”
Ventura Police Special Victims Unit detectives are continuing to investigate. Kellogg Park and the surrounding area receive regular patrols, and the department remains committed to ensuring public safety and supporting victims of violent crime.
