A Living Legacy: Chumash Tomol Showcased at Museum of Ventura County

By Patricia Schallert –

On November 8, Alan Salazar and a group of Chumash community members proudly paraded a traditional tomol canoe down Main Street to the Museum of Ventura County. The tomol, a plank canoe crafted by the Chumash people of Southern California, was meticulously built and faithfully replicated using wooden planks sewn together with plant fibers and sealed with tar. These vessels were vital for fishing, trade, and travel along the coast – an essential part of Chumash culture and maritime heritage. The procession was a powerful tribute to the enduring legacy of the Chumash people and their deep connection to the sea and the Ventura community.

The City of Ventura’s Arts and Culture Commission has played a key role in supporting and preserving the cultural heritage of the Chumash community. Through a range of arts and cultural initiatives, the Commission has provided a platform for Chumash artists and performers to share their art, music, dance, and storytelling with the public. Alan Salazar, a Chumash spiritual leader in Ventura, continues to be a vital force in promoting and sustaining Chumash traditions and spirituality.

The display of the tomol at the Museum of Ventura County offers residents and visitors alike a meaningful opportunity to learn about and appreciate the rich cultural history of the Chumash people. In addition, the Arts and Culture Commission continues to amplify Chumash perspectives in public art and cultural programming, ensuring that their history and contributions are represented with accuracy and respect.

By fostering greater understanding and appreciation of Chumash culture, the Commission has helped strengthen the connection between the Chumash community and the broader Ventura community – building mutual respect, awareness, and pride. The tomol is currently on display at the Museum of Ventura County on Main Street.
