A Key Step in VenturaWaterPure’s Water Purification Process
By Ventura Breeze Staff
As Ventura continues to secure a sustainable and local water supply for the future, the VenturaWaterPure Program is making major strides toward improving water reliability through advanced purification technologies. One of the most important processes used in this program is called reverse osmosis – a high-tech but surprisingly simple method for purifying water.
So, what exactly is reverse osmosis?
At its core, reverse osmosis (RO) is a filtration process that removes unwanted substances from water by pushing it through a special semi-permeable membrane. Think of this membrane like an incredibly fine filter – so fine that it can remove contaminants as small as individual molecules. This includes salts, bacteria, viruses, pharmaceuticals, and other microscopic impurities that aren’t caught by traditional treatment methods.
In the VenturaWaterPure Program, reverse osmosis plays a crucial role in transforming recycled water into a highly purified and safe drinking water source. After treated wastewater (also called recycled water) goes through several preliminary cleaning stages it enters the reverse osmosis system. There, it’s forced through membranes that strip away virtually all remaining contaminants, producing water that is exceptionally pure.
But the job doesn’t stop there. After reverse osmosis, the water is further treated with ultraviolet light and advanced oxidation to break down any remaining trace compounds. The result is water that meets and exceeds all state and federal drinking water standards.
Why is this important for Ventura?
With limited access to imported water and ongoing challenges from drought and climate change, Ventura is investing in innovative solutions to make the most of its local water resources. By using reverse osmosis to purify recycled water, VenturaWaterPure helps create a new, locally controlled water supply – one that reduces reliance on other sources and increases our community’s resilience.
This process has been proven safe and effective in communities across California and the nation. VenturaWaterPure is bringing this technology home to ensure our city has a sustainable, drought-resistant water source for generations to come. Water Commission Meeting:
The next regular Water Commission Meeting will be held on Monday, August 25, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. The public is invited to join in-person for both meetings at the Ventura City Hall, Community Meeting Room, Second Floor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxv0q_9-F_8
