Fall Productions and Programming at CAPS (Plus Prop 50 Explained)

By Elizabeth Rodeno –

Recently, volunteers from the Ventura County League of Women Voters recorded an important public service message at CAPS to inform voters for the special election on Tuesday, November 4th. David Maron and Cheryl Collart presented a clear and unbiased explanation of Proposition 50, the state redistricting initiative.

As with many past elections, CAPS Media provides a nonpartisan public forum for candidates and issues of concern to the public. CAPS belongs to the entire community, with the “C” in CAPS standing for Community. The CAPS’ mission is to create an engaged and informed community through participation in electronic media.

The League of Women Voters presentation provides neutral, nonpartisan information to help voters make their choice. The presentation can be viewed on CAPS channel 6, online at capsmedia.org. The CAPS programming schedule is available at capsmedia.org.

The CAPS studio was also the location for a new series of Our Ventura programs, the weekly talk-show series that showcases community nonprofits, leaders, artists, and organizations and more in the community. Since 2008 Our Ventura has been producing original programming at CAPS. The programs are scheduled on Channel 6 and stream online. Check capsmedia.org for specific days and times.

On October 7, the CAPS crew recorded a special Town Hall meeting at Ventura High School for the Ventura Unified School District. The meeting focused on the future of the former Avenue School and Washington School sites, and a presentation on VUSD’s goals. The VUSD Town Hall airs on CAPS Channel 15, and streams on capsmedia.org.

For this edition, the featured CAPS employee is Manny Reynoso. Among his many responsibilities, Manny is the “man behind the curtain” directing, recording, and streaming all the city council meetings and many other public meetings from city hall. Manny is on site two hours before a meeting starts and in the control room until the meeting ends – which is quite often six or seven hours later. Manny is also the man calling the shots on CAPS remote, live productions including parades and the college and high school graduations. His CAPS journey is best described in his own words:

“About a decade ago I came into the CAPS Media Center with zero skills in film and television. With CAPS’ one-on-one training, I now have the skills to be marketable in this industry. For the past nine years, I’ve directed and streamed the city council meetings at City Hall from the control room in the top floor of city hall.

Like everyone else at CAPS, I’m involved in other projects and productions throughout the community. My story is not unique. Over the past few years, I’ve seen many others collaborate with the CAPS team members to grow their creative talent at the CAPS Media Center.

There’s much more to share about CAPS Media resources, training, classes, programs, KPPQ radio, and other opportunities. To register for the free monthly orientation or learn more about CAPS go to capsmedia.org. Discover what CAPS has to offer when you join the CAPS Creative Community.
