Founded in 1924 by Ralph C. Smedley, Toastmasters International was built on a simple idea: people learn best by doing. That philosophy continues to guide the Sandpiper Toastmasters Club of Ventura, where members build confidence and leadership skills step by step in a supportive environment.
On April 14, the club celebrated 50 years of service to the Ventura community at Pierpont Bay Yacht Club. Since its founding in 1976, Sandpiper Toastmasters has empowered individuals from diverse backgrounds – from young professionals to community leaders – to strengthen their communication skills and self-confidence. Marking the milestone, International President Aletta Rochat, DTM, attended as keynote speaker, highlighting the broader impact of the organization.
For many members, the journey begins with a challenge. As incoming president of the Women’s Council of Realtors in 2020, Vicky Cummings wanted to deliver an engaging and memorable speech. Like many, she faced a common fear – public speaking. With guidance from club founder Jim Sullivan, she developed the skills and confidence to connect with her audience and elevate her message.
Julio Gomez joined Toastmasters seeking mentorship to strengthen his communication skills, particularly his accent. Now a past president of the club, he is working toward the Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) designation – the organization’s highest honor – with the goal of founding a new club of his own.
Another member recalls initially dreading even brief introductions. “My voice shook,” he said. Starting with a small meeting role, he gradually built confidence, eventually leading meetings and delivering speeches with assurance. His experience reflects a common Toastmasters journey: steady progress through practice and encouragement.
Founder and past president Jim Sullivan has seen that transformation countless times. Reflecting on his early experience starting a club in Nebraska with just 20 members, he emphasizes the lasting value of the program: “Toastmasters offers an excellent opportunity to become a leader in whatever you do – whether in business, service, or community life.”
For half a century, Sandpiper Toastmasters has provided a welcoming space for individuals to grow as communicators and leaders. Members consistently share how the experience has strengthened their careers, given them confidence, and helped them find their voice.
“This 50-year milestone isn’t just about the numbers; it reflects Ventura’s strong sense of community and commitment to personal growth,” said Cummings. “We celebrate every individual who has walked through our doors with their own goals and aspirations.”
As the club looks ahead, it remains committed to fostering communication, leadership, and connection for future generations. Open to anyone interested in self-improvement, Sandpiper Toastmasters continues to offer mentorship, hands-on learning, and a supportive environment where members can thrive.
The Sandpiper Toastmasters Club meets Wednesdays from 6:30–7:45 a.m. at Pizza Man Dan’s on Santa Clara St. For more information, visit www.toastmasters.org/Find-a-Club/00001224-00001224.
