VCPA Welcomes First K-9 Officers and Partners

From the Ventura County Probation Agency (VCPA) –

The Ventura County Probation Agency (VCPA) is proud to announce the assignment of two new K-9 Officers, Virna Mejia and Andy Bernal, and their specially trained K-9 partners, Inca and Koda. This marks a significant step forward in enhancing the agency’s safety protocols and community service capabilities.

The introduction of K-9 Officers and their canine partners is a strategic initiative designed to strengthen public safety and support probation supervision efforts. This highly skilled K-9 team will focus on detecting illegal substances and weapons during home visits and searches within juvenile facilities. Their presence not only acts as a powerful deterrent against criminal activity but also enhances officer safety and efficiency during field operations.

K-9 units have been proven to improve search accuracy and efficiency, building trust within the community through their non-threatening yet effective approach. The partnership between officer and canine also boosts morale and fosters a deeper commitment to community protection.

Both Officers Mejia and Bernal, along with Inca and Koda, undergo rigorous and continuous training to maintain the highest standards of performance and reliability in all duties.

Chief Probation Officer Ron Miller emphasized the value of this new program, saying, “I have personally observed the dedication and extensive training our K-9 Officers and their partners commit to daily. This team brings an unmatched level of precision and safety to our operations. Their skills significantly enhance our ability to enforce court orders, ensure community safety, and support rehabilitation efforts. I am confident this K-9 unit will become a vital asset to our agency and the communities we serve.”

Assistant Chief Probation Officer Candice Modica added, “Our mission is to promote accountability while fostering rehabilitation. The integration of a K-9 team strengthens this mission by enabling more effective and safer searches for drugs and weapons, reducing risks to our staff while enhancing public safety. This K-9 team also provides an invaluable presence that supports both our officers and the individuals under our supervision, reinforcing a safer, healthier community environment.”

The Ventura County Probation Agency looks forward to the continued growth and success of its K-9 program, reaffirming its commitment to innovative approaches in public safety and rehabilitation.
