Nature’s Spirits: A Celebration of Heritage
In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, the Ventura Botanical Gardens presents Nature’s Spirits – Flight of Our Ancestors, a colorful mini exhibit running Sept. 15 through Nov. 1, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Inspired by rich cultural traditions, including ancient Mayan mythology, the exhibit explores the hummingbird as a sacred messenger believed to carry messages from ancestors and loved ones. Throughout the gardens, visitors will encounter bold colors, striking silhouettes, autumn blooms and colorful calaveras gigantes, or giant decorative skulls, creating a festive, Day of the Dead-inspired atmosphere.
The exhibit also celebrates the creativity of the local community. Much of the artwork was created by Ventura Botanical Gardens volunteers, Ventura College art students and children from the IDEA Center on Ventura’s Westside.
The celebration continues after dark with a special evening event on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 5 to 8 p.m. Visitors can explore the gardens at night, enjoy traditional Mexican hot chocolate and cookies, and visit a fortune teller tucked inside a giant hummingbird-inspired nest for a glimpse into the future.
The evening also offers after-hours shopping at the Welcome Center, Gift Shop and Nursery, where guests can browse plants and other selections. Access to the upper garden walkways will be closed during the event.
The hot chocolate will feature Abuelita, a traditional Mexican chocolate brand with roots dating to 1939, adding a taste of Mexican culinary heritage to the evening.
General admission to the Botanical Gardens is $15, with free admission for members and children accompanied by an adult.
Nature’s Spirits – Flight of Our Ancestors offers visitors an opportunity to experience art, culture, nature and community while celebrating the traditions and stories that connect generations. https://venturabotanicalgardens.org/.
