The Thomas Fire benefit 805 Love Notes concert at the Ventura Theater on Sunday, January 14, was an amazing day of talent celebrating first responders and raising money for Help-California.org, a grassroot efforts to help our community recovery. Just a few of the highlights were performances by Glen Phillips of Toad the Wet Sprocket, the return of Shades of Day and Franklin for Short as well as all the artists who donated their time. I can’t thank Steve and Polly Hoganson enough for inviting me to emcee the day.

Mark Hartley gave me the head’s up for the Thomas Fire Benefit Festival (www.ThomasFireBenefit.com) to be held at Plaza Park on Saturday, February 3. He said this one will be one for the books, and I can’t disagree as the headliner will be Kevin Costner and Modern West along with Olivia Newton John, Colbie Caillat, Super Duper Kyle, and Ventura’s own Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. When asked what it means to be a part of the fundraiser, BBVD front man, Scotty Morris, told me, “It means everything to us! We were on the road when the Thomas Fires kicked in and it was personally one of the most painful tours of my career. Watching my city burn on [social media] is hard to put into words. To see my family and my friends and my community facing such unbelievable horrors in our beautiful city was heartbreaking. All we wanted to do was get back home and help.” I also hear more acts may be added, so keep tuned!

And yet another Thomas Fire benefit will be held this month at Discovery on Friday, January 19, with The Delgado Brothers, Teresa James & the Rhythm Tramps, Guy Martin and Ray Jaurique & the Uptown Brothers. 100% of the funds raised will go to Ventura County Food Share Food Bank, The United Way Thomas Fire Fund and the Red Cross Thomas Fire Fund.

Quick notes: The Boatyard Pub now offers live music Tuesday through Saturday, Yachtley Crew continues their Thursday night residency at Bombays, Cubensis returns to Ventura for a show on Saturday January 20 at Discovery, Tariqh Akoni and Curt Bisquera play Grapes and Hops on Thursday, January 18 as The Groove Lounge; Made West celebrates their 2-year anniversary Saturday, January 27 with Skin & Bones; and the Ventura County Concert Band has a free concert for the family on Sunday, January 28 at Ventura High School’s auditorium.

I’ll be spinning new music over the next few weeks from Karyn 805, Anchor & Bear and Brent Franklin on the Pam Baumgardner Music Hour which airs weekly (Tuesdays and Fridays at 5 and Sundays at noon) on KPPQ-LP 104.1 FM here in Ventura, and worldwide on the internet, at www.CapsMedia.org/Radio. Help support real local radio supporting local artists in the 805.

Vol. 11, No. 7 – Jan 3 – Jan 16, 2018 – Ventura Music Scene

by Pam Baumgardner
VenturaRocks.com

I’m happy to report that our community continues to rally to help raise funds for Thomas Fire relief. I can’t tell you how much I’m looking forward to Ventura becoming stronger and more vibrant this year, and music has a lot to do with that.

The next big benefit comes from the former owners of Zoey’s, Steve and Polly Hoganson entitled 805 Love Notes which is being billed as a thank you to the first responders and a Thomas Fire relief benefit concert at the Ventura Theater on Sunday, January 14. The show starts at 4 in the afternoon with so many Zoey’s alumni on the bill including Chris Pierce, Glen Phillips (Toad the Wet Sprocket), Jesse Siebenberg (Lukas Nelson), Lee Koch, Leslie Stevens, the Pendleton Sisters, Shawn Jones, Bryan Titus, Seth Pettersen, Trevor Beld, Shades of Day, Shane Alexander, Tim Curran, Todd Hannigan and more! It promises to be a lovely evening filled with so much love for all our heroes.

Another benefit (which was scheduled before the fire) is Nardcore Punk Rock to Walk Me Home which supports sheltered and fostered dogs find new homes. This one falls on Saturday, January 6, at the Ventura Theater with TSOL headlining along with Nardcore bands on the bill such as Ill Repute, Stalag 13, Boxheads, The Big Problem and Civil Conflict.

Quick notes: Dwight Yoakam’s rescheduled show at the Ventura Theater is Thursday, January 4; Yachtley Crew begins a Thursday night residency at Bombay’s this month; Hi Hat Entertainment has Kelly’s Lot on Friday, January 5, and Rob Rio on Friday January 12; The Golden China is hosting a Thomas Fire fundraiser featuring Darkside Cosplay on Saturday, January 13.

Oh! Just so you know, I heard an advance rough cut of a new song written by Tommy Marsh featuring some of my favorite players here in town, Tommy Marsh, Guy Martin and Shawn Jones. The tune is called “Rise from the Ashes” and according to Tommy he hopes to raise money for ongoing Thomas Fire relief funds. The next stage is to add more players and a vocal choir. Additional artists expected to contribute their time to this project include Johnny Main (The 44’s), Robert Ramirez and Michelle Voltrian (Medicine Hat), Jodi Farrell and students, Evangeline Noelle (Sisterook), Kelly Z and Perry Robertson (Kelly’s Lot), and more! I cannot wait to hear the final product and you know I’ll be spinning it on my radio show.

And speaking of which, the Pam Baumgardner Music Hour continues to air weekly (Tuesdays and Fridays at 5 and Sundays at noon) on KPPQ-LP 104.1 FM here in Ventura, but the station is also worldwide now on the internet, so no excuses! Invite your family and friends to tune in for so many great artists out of the 805, just tell them to adjust for their specific time zone. They can find the station at www.CapsMedia.org/Radio.

by Pam Baumgardner
VenturaRocks.com

I’m not going to lie, this is awkward. How does one write about promoting a music scene while so many around us are suffering major loses? We’re suppose to be celebrating the most joyous time of the year and we find ourselves affected by one of the worst disasters our City has ever had to endure. I’m a firm believer that music helps to heal, and thankfully we have a community of artists, venues and music supporters who have been rallying to help others. That is what I plan to take from this catastrophic event. The fundraisers, the donations of one’s tip jar, bands playing for free, venues offering their facilities, and the dozens and dozens in our community planning, creating, and supporting all these efforts. Yes, Ventura does and will continue to rock.

Here now, as promised, New Year’s Eve parties around town. Please contact the venues for ticket pricing and amenities and be sure the event has not sold out. Grapes and Hops will be hosting a Speakeasy themed party with the Barrelhouse Wailers; Discovery has Hirie in the house; The Tavern offers a dress-up black and white themed event with DJ Aycer; the Hong Kong Inn has the Misunderstood band; the Star Lounge snagged Alastair Greene for their party; The Greek at the Harbor has an “Under the Sea” themed soiree with the band Awesome Sauce; Café Fiore has Young Dempsey up front and Big Adventure in the Tree House; you can party at the Copa Cubana with the Brandon Ragan Project; you’ll find What the Funk at Gigi’s; Crosscut will be at the Keynote Lounge; the House Arrest band will be at the Moose Lodge; and there’ll be plenty of dancing with DJs at Bombay’s and Sans Souci.

Quick notes: Tilford Jackson’s Christmas special will be held on Thursday, December 21, at Squashed Grapes; Smash Mouth plays Discovery on Friday, December 22; the Ventura Theater 5th annual Holiday Sing-along has been rescheduled for Friday, December 22; Hi Hat Entertainment presents James Intveld and Elvis Blue Christmas on Friday, December 22, at the Hong Kong Inn; Shaky Feelin’ is hosting a Christmas show on Saturday, December 23, at Bombay’s; there’s a Ventura Strong community holiday party on Saturday, December 23, at the Ventura Beach Club with Hard Six, Raging Arb and the Redheads, Laura Ruth Ward, and DjPj; and just a reminder, Chopper Fest was postponed, new date is February 4.

And I just got the press release that Night Demon has announced Frost and Fire has gone global with their next event to be held in London over two days, May 11 and 12, 2018. Headlining will be Cirth Ungol. Way to go boys.

I’m wishing a safe, prosperous and harmonious year for one and all.

Vol. 11, No. 5 – Dec 6 – Dec 19, 2017 – Ventura Music Scene

How quickly time passes as we find ourselves in the final month of the year. My next column will cover New Year’s Eve parties, but for now, let’s take a look at a couple of special events you might want to support during December.

The 5th annual 4 Kids 2 Kids Toy Drive will be held Saturday, December 9th, at the Ventura Beach Club from 5-10 pm. Not only will the honorary guest and rock and roll hall of famer, Nick St. Nicolas (Steppenwolf) be on hand, but so will the jolly guy himself, old saint Nick, aka Santa Claus, as only Gary Gordon Goff can pull off. Featured artists playing include Johnny Main and the 44’s, Ray Jaurique and the Uptown Brothers, Tommy Marsh, Tom & Milo, and more.

The Brave & the Young are holding a fundraiser at Made West Brewery on Saturday, December 9, called My Brother’s Board. It will help benefit Ian Campbell (Campbell Brothers Surfboards) who is battling cancer. It’s a daylong event with board swapping, raffle, yoga and more, including of course live music. The bands start at 4 pm with Geranium, then Tim Curran, Todd Hannigan and My Brother’s Band wrapping up the event.

The Majestic Ventura Theater is holding their 5th annual Holiday Sing-along on Saturday, December 9th. It’s a great event for the entire family, and they’re only asking for a donation of an unwrapped toy from each group attending.

Hi Hat Entertainment booked Harpdog Brown & the Travelin’ Blues Show while they’re out on their US West Coast Tour in support of their new release, Travelin’ with the Blues. Based out of Vancouver, Canada, this is the band’s first Southern California appearance. Harpdog Brown is Canada’s reigning Harmonica Player of the Year since 2014 and they’ll be performing at the Hong Kong Inn on Friday, December 10.

Chopper Fest returns to the Ventura Fairgrounds on Sunday, December 10. This event is dedicated to the design, function and art of the motorcycle. While checking out some amazing rides, you can enjoy live music from The Bob Carrillo Blues Band, Kelly’s Lot and Gethen Jenkins. You can get more information including ticket prices at ChopperFestival.com.

Quick notes: Dag Nasty and the Missing 23rd will be at The Garage on Thursday, December 7; The Vonettes will do an early show at Bombay’s at 7 pm on Friday, December 8; Topa Mountain Winery has music in the afternoon on Saturday December 9th with Crooked Eye Tommy and Sunday, December 10th with Matthew Zeltzer; I’m hearing Tariqh Akoni is expected to join Shawn Jones at Grapes and Hops on Sunday, December 10; the Ventura Harbor parade of lights falls over the weekend of December 15 and 16 with music at several venues including the Boatyard Pub and Copa Cubana; there will be a Silent Night Disco at Plaza Park on Friday December 15; the Phantom Pomps CD release party will be held at the Hong Kong Inn on Saturday, December 16; the Rubicon Harmonix Concert will be on Sunday December 17 at the Rubicon; and the final SPRP event will be held at the Sewer on December 17 with FSKD, Publik Enima, I Decline and the Kane Gang.

The Rubicon Theater will be hosting a special evening of holiday cheer on Sunday, December 17th featuring the Rubicon Harmonix, six high school seniors (five of whom have been in the group since middle school). You may have caught them in the past performing at the Channel Islands Chamber Orchestra Holiday Concert, the YMCA prayer breakfast or the Downtown Ventura tree lighting ceremony. The concert will feature a mix of sacred and secular songs of the season. Tickets are available at RubiconTheatre.org.

Vol. 10, No. 4 – Nov 22 – Dec 5, 2017 – Ventura Music Scene

by Pam Baumgardner

The holiday season is in full swing with Ventura looking as lovely as ever with music keeping us as lively as ever. To start off with, it’s the “social event of the year,” Ventura Winter Wine Walk and Holiday Street Fair on Saturday, December 2. The holiday street fair is free and runs from Noon until 8 pm; the main stage of music is also free and located at the corner of Main and California with City Hall as the backdrop. The bands rockin’ the event this year are the Road Brothers, Adelaide and the Bomb. Then of course it’s the Wine Walk (21 and over) which typically sells out every year; it runs from 4 until 7 pm.

Squashed Grapes is hosting a fundraiser for the local chapter of Notes for Notes on Saturday afternoon, December 2, from 1:30 to 4:30 pm with two acts on the bill. Firstly, it’s the East Valley Road band featuring Notes for Notes students who are raising funds to help them get to a Blues competition in Nashville, and then it’s Patrick Warburton’s band called The Bearded Pearl Clams featuring Pearl Jam tunes. Yes, you read that right, it is that Patrick Warburton of Seinfeld and Rules of Engagement fame. It’s all about raising awareness about this amazing program available to our up and coming young musicians here in Ventura where they have a state-of-the-art recording studio available to them and soon a mentoring program featuring a Master’s program with key local musicians. You can learn more about this non-profit organization at NotesForNotes.org.

The Surfrider Foundation’s 8th annual Pints Against Plastics benefit will be held at Discovery on Saturday, November 25th, with Through the Roots and Rising Son providing the reggae. The fundraiser is for litter prevention efforts for Ventura County beaches and rivers. Find out more at Ventura.Surfrider.org.

Quick notes: Kick off the holiday weekend with pre-Thanksgiving fun on Wednesday night, November 22, with Yachtley Crew at Bombay’s; Nathan McEuen returns to town with a show at Grapes and Hops on Friday, November 24, with what he calls Nathan McEuen and the Enormous Ego Band; there’s a Numbskull Productions show at the Garage with Captured! By Robots on Friday, November 24; catch The Tenderloin and Spivey Spi at Duke’s on Seaward on Friday, December 1; the Old Time Country Music Christmas concert will be held on Sunday, December 3, at the Poinsettia Pavilion; and just released, the soundtrack to the documentary featuring local blind musician, Rachel Flowers, “Hearing is Believing.”

And finally, Ray Jaurique and the Uptown Brothers are working on their second release. Ray told me he’s penned ten or eleven new songs and that this one will include some special guest players; they’re working out of Castaway 7 Studios here in Ventura.
