June 7: Wednesday BCNN, Beach Cities Newcomers and Neighbors monthly meeting speaker is Frank DeMartino an avid birdwatcher whose passion for birds has led him to serve on the board for both Ventura Audubon Society and Conejo Valley Audubon Society. Currently he serves as the President for CVAS and he opened a Wild Birds Unlimited store in Ventura in 2017.

June 3: Ventura Audubon Society will be conducting a volunteer Beach Naturalist training workshop on Saturday from 9am to 2pm. Become a beach naturalist volunteer for the Shorebird Recovery Program. You will learn about beach ecology, plover/tern nesting and chick rearing,. After lunch, included , you will join Biologists and Outreach Coordinator to practice what you have learned. Volunteers will be asked to complete two beach shifts per month through September. Funding for this grant program is made possible by sales of the WHALE TAIL® License Plate, donations to the Protect Our Coast and Oceans Fund on the California state tax return, and funds from the State of California. Livingston’s Grief & Bereavement Program is offering a weekly Good Grief Club to children ages 6 – 11 who have lost a loved one. This session will focus on grief through cinematherapy. April 22: The strength and resilience of Ventura will be on view as the Ventura County Library Foundation presents a tour of some of the beautifully rebuilt homes after the devastation of the Thomas Fire from Noon to 4 p.m.  The Ventura County Library Foundation offers this home tour to support the county libraries. Representatives from the Ventura Regional Fire Safe Council will also be on hand to provide home gardening information.

May 3: Jess Ramirez is the first Wednesday of the month Beach Cities Newcomers and Neighbors meeting speaker.  He is on the Board of Labor Commissions of the Oxnard Harbor District.  He served with distinction in the US Army in both Europe and Vietnam.  He has a bachelor’s degree from UC San Diego in Sociology.  He worked as a longshoreman for 18 years. The meeting will be at The Ventura Harbor Yacht Club, 1755 Spinnaker Drive. 9:30 -11 a.m.  Beach Cities and Neighbors and Newcomers, BCNN is a group for women from Ventura, Oxnard, and Port Hueneme.  It has dozens of small group offshoots, from sports activities, town tastings, bridge, games, book groups, and more. May 4: Gail Ginell will visit the Hill Road Library on Thursday at 5 p.m. to deliver a presentation on Adventures in Lifelong Learning. Road Scholar is the world’s largest educational travel organization for adults, offering nearly 5,500 affordable programs annually in about 150 countries worldwide. These programs provide a chance to expand your mind while in the company of other people who believe that learning is one of the best parts of life.

May 16: The Ventura Regional Fire Safe Council will visit the Hill Road Library on Tuesday, to host a workshop for the local community entitled “Wildfire Preparedness: Protect Your Home Against The Threat Of Wildfires.” 

This workshop will deliver a brief overview of wildfire history and behavior, provide steps you can take to protect your home and families, and give resources for emergency preparedness.

Award winning artist, teacher and mentor, Bert Collins, will be honored at the Ventura County Creative Artist’s (VCCA) upcoming show. The show will take place on May 6 and 7 from 11 am to 4 pm at her West Hills Gallery located at 1545 Cuyama Road in Ojai. Collins, who will celebrate her 95th birthday in June, continues to paint daily and give classes out of her Ojai home-studio despite challenging physical limitations.

Collins began her long career as an artist painting with oils. Once she and her husband moved to Ojai in the 1980s she transitioned to pastels inspired by the beautiful landscapes of the area. She considers herself a tonalist “with a hard line of realism.” Her work is influenced by the past and present, echoing the Romantic humanists of the 19th century. She has influenced hundreds of artists and her work is still widely collected throughout the country.

Local Oxnard author Leslie Rinchen-Wongmo will visit the Ojai Library at 2pm on Saturday, May 13, 2023, to talk about her new book, Threads of Awakening: An American Woman’s Journey into Tibet’s Sacred Textile Art.

What if you set out to travel the world and got sidetracked in a Himalayan art workshop? What if that sidetrack turned out to be your life’s path? For over 500 years, Tibetans have been creating sacred images from pieces of silk. Much rarer than paintings and sculptures, these stitched fabric thangkas are among Tibet’s finest artworks. In 1992, Leslie Rinchen-Wongmo traveled to the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile in India to manage an economic development fund, only to wind up sewing pictures of Buddha instead. Through her remarkable journey, she discovered that a path is made by walking it and some of the best paths are made by walking off course. In this talk, Leslie will reveal the unique stitches of an ancient needlework tradition, introduce the Buddhist deities it depicts, and share the extraordinary possibilities they embody.

Trained by two of the finest living Tibetan appliqué artists, Leslie learned to stitch bits of silk into elaborate figurative mosaics that bring the transformative images of Buddhist meditation to life. Her artwork has been exhibited internationally and featured in the documentary Creating Buddhas: The Making and Meaning of Fabric Thangkas. After two decades abroad, Leslie returned to southern California where she now lives with three cats and enough fabric to last several lifetimes. Chamber On The Mountain, a chamber music concert series in Ojai presents the multiple award-winning cellist, Alexander Hersh, with pianist, Dominic Cheli, for a beautiful program with a mix of solo cello and cello and piano music on Sunday, April 16, 2023, at 3:00 pm in Logan House (located at the Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts in Upper Ojai). “Elemental,” an art exhibit featuring the work of six talented Ojai artists, will run until April 30th with an opening reception Sunday, April 16th, from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. at The Ojai Art Center. We hope you can join us.

This show promises to be a must-see exhibition for art lovers and nature enthusiasts alike. In addition, a Patio Pop-Up Show of recent work will be featured Sat. & Sun., April 15th & 16th, from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The exhibit and pop-up show will feature a wide range of artwork for sale.

Micaela Ellis, teen author, will visit E.P. Foster Library on Saturday, April 8, 11:00 am to noon

opportunities for growth and learning that are available to children like her when they are
respected and understood.

Nathalia brings Bilingual Music for Families to Hill Road Library on Tuesday, April 25 at 3:30
pm. Get ready to dance and sing in English and Espanol with Nathalia, a multi-talented singer
songwriter based out of Los Angeles. From rock to cumbia, jazz to reggaeton, Nathalia’s songs
are produced in a number of different musical styles and written with the whole family in mind.
This event is open to all ages.

April 8: Micaela Ellis, the teen author, will visit two Ventura County libraries, Ray D. Prueter Library, and E.P. Foster Library, to deliver a presentation on her book, Autism Over the Years. In her presentation, Micaela will share her experiences as a young adult navigating autism in today’s world. She hopes to expand community perceptions and educate others on some of the challenges that autistic people may face, as well as share the many growth opportunities that are available to children and young adults like her when their needs are respected, understood, and celebrated.

The event will begin at 11 a.m. at E.P. Foster Library at 651 Main Street.

April 15: Flamenco in the 805 is back! Namba Performing Arts Space will host the 5th annual Flamenco showcase at 7 p.m. The show will open with the dance students of Wendy Castellanos and feature over 25 dancers from all over the 805 and the globe. The second half will feature Ana Quintero singing timeless gypsy melodies and Gerardo Morales on Flamenco guitar. At the same time, dancers Ryan Rockmore and Wendy Castellanos set the stage ablaze with thundering rhythms, entrancing movements, and heart-wrenching expressions. Get ready, Ventura! April 16: The Ventura Senior Men’s Group has Ian Johnson, a Ventura County fire station chief speaking.  I’ve asked him to cover the relationships between the multiple fire authorities when we have a significant fire.  Ian says he has many stories about fighting the Thomas Fire.  The group continues to meet for a social lunch and program at the Poinsettia Pavilion in Ventura on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. In 1989, the very first Community Good Friday Service began in the City of Ventura. The service included the senior pastors from four churches, Horizon Foursquare Church, which is now The River Community Church, First Baptist Church, which is now Coastline Bible Church, South Coast Fellowship, which is now Journey Church Ventura, and Community Presbyterian Church which is still Community Presbyterian Church.

Today, thirty-four years later, we have approximately fifteen churches represented and over a dozen denominations. On Good Friday, denominational differences will be set aside, and the focus will be on what all these churches have in common, which is Jesus Christ.

“I love this service!” says Senior Pastor Jim Duran of The River Community Church. “The pastors in this city have become good friends, and they love to serve together for the betterment of our community. Each pastor brings their own personality, their knowledge of the scripture, and their love for Jesus, which makes this an amazing service. The entire city of Ventura should experience our Good Friday Service.”

April 4: Beach Cities Neighbors and Newcomer’s speaker is Marsha McHenry Carol moved to Ventura from Dana Point five years ago. She has a degree in Communications from Cal State, Fullerton, and is a freelance journalist, writing for many of California’s lifestyle magazines. She splits her time between Laguna and Ventura. She bought Charles of Laguna, Charles Wigs, in 2010 when the business was 45 years old. She recently opened a private room, a wig boutique in Salon Pancho off Harbor Bl in Ventura. April 8: Saturday 8 – 2 p.m., our monthly plant and collectibles sale continues on the grounds at the Dudley House. April 12: The Ondulando Firewise Community will hold its first community-wide meeting from 6 – 7 p.m. at the Church of the Foothills, 6279 Foothill Road. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. All residents of Ondulando are invited to come and learn about the benefits of a Firewise Community: How to harden your home against wildfires, how our neighborhood can be more fire resilient, and how the cost of home insurance can be reduced for Firewise Communities.

Our local Ventura Regional Fire Safe Council has been helping us start our Firewise Community using the FIREWISE USA framework. “The Firewise USA program encourages local solutions for safety by involving homeowners in taking individual responsibility for preparing their homes for the risk of wildfire. The program provides resources to help homeowners learn how to adapt to living with wildfire and encourages neighbors to work together to act now to prevent losses.” (VRFSC, Feb 2023). April 15: Step Up Ventura, a 501(c)(3) organization that provides academic, social, emotional, and behavioral skills to children experiencing homelessness under the age of 5, is hosting a Local Youth Artist Showcase on Saturday from 7-9 p.m. at Bell Arts Factory, 432 N. Ventura Ave. Our Inspire to Aspire event will feature the talent of local VUSD students through choral and jazz music, crafted desserts by Ventura High School culinary students, and a silent auction. E.P. Foster Library is offering a new book club – Foster’s Young Reader Book Club will meet on the fourth Saturday of each month, from 1:00 to 2:00 pm, for children ages 9-12 (4th or 5th grade reading level). The selection to be discussed at the March 25 meeting is The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo. Despereaux Tilling is a mouse who sets out on a quest to rescue a beautiful human princess from the rats. The book won the 2004 Newbery Medal award and has been adapted into a film, a video game, and a stage musical.

Micaela Ellis, teen author, will visit E.P. Foster Library on Saturday, April 8, 11:00 am to noon to present her book, Autism Over The Years and share her perspective on life as a child with autism. She hopes to educate others on the challenges that people with autism face and the many opportunities for growth and learning that are available to children like her when they are respected and understood.

The Hill Road Library Book Club will discuss Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver on
Tuesday, March 28, 5:00 to 6:00 pm. The April book club selection is Bird Brother: A Falconer’s Journey
and the Healing Power of Wildlife by Rodney Stotts.

Hill Road Library also offers a quarterly Wise Owls Book Club for adults who enjoy reading children’s literature. The Spring meeting takes place on Tuesday, April 11, 5:00 to 6:00 pm. The book selection is : The Last Cuentista by Donna Barba Higuera. This middle-grade dystopian novel follows Petra Peña who, along with her family and a few hundred others, leaves Earth to continue the human race after a comet strikes the planet.

The Ventura County Library Foundation has announced its second Rising from the Ashes home tour to take place on Saturday, April 22, 12:00 to 4:00 pm.

The Thomas Fire of 2017 caused devastation, but not defeat. The Ventura County Library Foundation invites you to witness the resilience of Ventura as you tour some of the beautifully rebuilt homes and hear the stories of rebirth.

Proceeds will help fund important literacy programs, the Mobile Library, broader access to the internet and computers to close the digital divide, homework tutoring, STEAM initiatives, and much more.
