Letters for the Lost, an exhibit marking the 90th anniversary of the St. Francis Dam Disaster, commemorates the lives lost during one of America’s worst civil engineering disasters of the 20th century. May 23: The College Area Community Council Wednesday, at 7 p.m. A representative from the Public Works Department and the police department will give brief updates and answer questions. May 24: The County of Ventura Human Resources Department will host its annual Family Care and Volunteer Resource Fair on Thursday, from 10 – 1 p.m. Main courtyard at the County Government Center, 800 S. Victoria Ave. Visitors to the fair can receive information and resources on family care – including child care, elder care and senior services. The event is hosted by Work Life Program of the County of Ventura. Both the event and parking are free.

May 26: The Ventura Tennis Club, in partnership with the Ventura Recreation and Community

Services, are hosting a bi-annual Ventura Tennis Day on Saturday, from 9 – 3 p.m.

at the Camino Real Tennis Park. Clinics for adults and kids from 9 – 12 p.m. with pro Hoss Salehi and staff. After a break for refreshments, raffle and announcements there will be organized doubles play in the afternoon. The Ventura Tennis Club is a non-profit community based club bringing tennis enthusiasts of all ages and abilities together for social and competitive play.

May 26: Volunteers needed for Ormond Beach/Wetland clean up, Saturday, 9-11 a.m. The Nature Conservancy is hosting a clean-up of the wetland and beach area of Ormond Beach at the end of McWane Blvd. Clean up supplies will be provided. Please wear durable shoes and note that there are no facilities at this location. A naturalist will be on site to provide information on the natural history of the area. Professor James Adams of USC School of Pharmacy will return to Ojai on Saturday, July 14, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a Summer Medicinal Plant Workshop. Based on Dr. Adams’ pharmacological studies on local native plants. For information and registration, visit HerbWalks.com or call 646-6281.

The cost of the workshop is $75 including all materials. Registrants will receive an email during the week prior with all necessary information including directions, what to bring, etc. After the workshop, participants will receive a complete list of all plants that are identified and utilized as well as recipes and other information.

In continuing its program of recognizing outstanding actors, the Ojai Film Festival presents An Evening with Sally Kellerman on June 3 from 4 to 8 pm at the Ojai Art Center. The event will include a screening of her iconic film “MASH.” Her 60-year career in film, TV and voice-over reflects her versatility as a performer. The Ojai Film Festival is delighted to present the satirical black comedy that brought her nominations for an Academy Award and Golden Globe.

Sally’s monumental break came via director Robert Altman when he hired her, and she created a dusky-voiced sensation out of the aggressively irritating character Major Margaret. Both she and the film were a spectacular success. She went on to do several more Altman classics “Brewster McCloud” and “Welcome to LA.” Her last film was in 2011.

The Ojai Photo Club will feature photographer Scott Miles as its presenter for May. The free event, “The Scientific Photographer,” will be held on Tuesday, May 15, at 7 p.m. in Help of Ojai’s Kent Hall, 111 W. Santa Ana St.

The club, which is devoted to education, inspiration, and camaraderie, meets on the third Tuesday of each month, February – November. Only members may submit images for critique. More information is available at: www.ojaiphotoclub.com/

Jill Santos will visit the Ojai Library at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 19, 2018, to deliver a presentation on local non-profit Food Forward. Santos is an avid outdoor adventurist who moved to Southern California in 2007.

Food Forward rescues fresh, wholesome produce that would otherwise go to waste, connecting this abundance with people in need and inspiring others to do the same. Food Forward staff and volunteers rescue more than 300,000 pounds of surplus produce each week from backyard fruit trees, orchards, farmers markets, and wholesale warehouses. These fresh fruits and vegetables are donated to over 300 hunger relief agencies across eight counties in Southern California.

On Sunday, May 20th, Ojai Jazz Concerts will feature Mitchell Forman on piano, Kevin Axt, on bass, and Steve Haas on drums. The event will be from 7-9 and doors to the Ojai Art Center, at 113 South Montgomery Street, will open at 6:30. Tickets are available at www.ojaijazzconcerts.com.

The Ojai Valley Library Friends and Foundation (OVLFF) invites you to its Annual Memorial Day Weekend Book Sale on Saturday, May 26, Sunday May 27 and Monday 28, 2018 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale will be held on the patio and parking lot of the Ojai Library, 111 E. Ojai Avenue. A huge amount of high quality books will be sold at prices that range from 50 cents to $2.00.

All profits from the book store go to providing the three Ojai Libraries, Oak View, Meiners Oaks and downtown Ojai, with revenue to support special programs for children and adults and for the purchase of additional materials and books.

May 17: Ventura Water’s General Manager, Kevin Brown, will be the featured speaker at the meeting of the East Ventura Community Council. Mr. Brown, who oversees the city’s water and wastewater division will address the residents’ concerns about water shortage in light of new construction on the east side o. The council will also hold a discussion about the issue of possible redrawing of council boundaries to more closely coincide with the new electoral districts.

May 20: The Ventura and Santa Barbara County chapter of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors (NAWCC) will meet Sunday, in the Campus Student Center of Ventura College. The meeting starts at noon and at 11 a.m. there will be an informal workshop where a topic on clocks or watches will be demonstrated and discussed. There will be a mart where items will be for sale followed by lunch and an informational meeting and a program at 1 p.m. The program this month will be a presentation by David Walter on “Watchmaking”. “Fire Walk With Us” will be a fire ecology workshop with Richard Halsey and Lanny Kaufer , on Saturday, May 5, in Ojai. Identify and discuss chaparral plants and their responses to the recent fire. Tickets are $55 for adults, $45 for seniors 62-up, and $35 for OVLC members, students 13-18, and fire survivors (those who lost property in the Thomas and Koenigstein Fires). Chamber On The Mountain presents the Zorá String Quartet, an exquisite ensemble of young musicians, on Sunday, May 6, at 3:00 pm. Performance will take place at Logan House in Upper Ojai. Audience members are invited to stay and meet the artists at a reception following the performance.

The Zorá String Quartet leapt to national attention in 2015, after capturing the Grand Prize and Gold Medal of the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition,.

On Memorial Day, May 28, at 843 East Ojai Avenue, American Legion will host a Free Breakfast for Vets. Tickets are $4.00 for all others and the event will be from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

Libbey Bowl will also feature patriotic music by the British Brass at 11:30. There will be patriotic singers at 12:30 and speakers from 12:35 to 1:00 honoring the fallen.

May 9: Sharing the Streets and Roads for all Users 7p.m., at the Museum of Ventura County. Derek Towers of Ventura’s Public Works/Transportation division will discuss the ways in which road projects are prioritized, planned, and eventually built as well what cyclists can do to become more involved throughout the process. Derek has been instrumental in Ventura being awarded a “Bicycle Friendly Community” in 2017 by the League of American Bicyclists. His is responsible for planning and executing bike paths, bike routes, bike parking, and bike events for the city.

Apr.14: Saturday, 7am to 1pm: Yard sale to raise funds for immigrants who lost homes, employment, and wages in the Thomas Fire and its aftermath. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to 805 Undocufund, a collective effort of Ventura and Santa Barbara County grassroots organizations to assist local undocumented immigrants who have been economically impacted by the Thomas Fire and are excluded from Federal Emergency Assistance programs. Affected immigrants include our friends, neighbors, coworkers, many of whom care for our children and parents, clean our homes, cook our meals, maintain our lawns and harvest the fruits and vegetables that are the backbone of our regional economy. Apr. 15: The Ventura and Santa Barbara County chapter of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors (NAWCC) will meet Sunday, in the Campus Student Center of Ventura College, 4667 Telegraph Road. Apr. 17: The current estimate of this year’s Ventura County tax bill for nuclear weapons will be close to $200 million. On Tuesday, join Citizens for Peaceful Resolutions on the corner of Telephone and Victoria from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. to peacefully protest the outrageous waste of resources spent on our deadliest weapons of mass destruction, nuclear weapons. Dr. Robert Dodge will report this year’s hall of shame, our tax dollars, bestowed upon the nuclear weapons industry.

Apr. 21: Join a family friendly and free community bike ride from Ventura Harbor to the Earth day Eco fest at Ventura’s Plaza Park. The ride is approximately 5 miles on flat, city streets with bike lanes and on the coast bike path. The ride is organized by the Channel Island Bike Club. Check in time is 8:30 a.m. at the Channel Islands National Park Headquarters, 1901 Spinnaker Drive. Introductions and the ride starts at 9 a.m.

All bikes should be “ride ready” and riders wearing a helmet. Channel Island Bike Club members can pump tires if you arrive early.

April 21: The Christian Science churches of Ojai and Ventura will host a free, hour-long talk entitled “Love without limit, Life without fear,” on Saturday, April 21 at 1 p.m. at the E. P. Foster Library, Topping Room, 651 E. Main St., Ventura. This lecture will focus on bringing healing to anyone in Ventura and Ojai impacted by the Thomas Fire and subsequent floods or facing personal challenges.
Fujiko Signs, an international speaker, practitioner and teacher of Christian Science healing, will speak about the kind of prayer people around the world are looking for – prayer that brings healing and peace to their lives.
Signs worked as a market research consultant and as a Japanese language and literature instructor at colleges and universities.

Villanova’s immensely creative talent manifests each year in the form of its spring musical. This year, students’ hard work comes to life on stage as they present Beauty and the Beast. The musical will run from Thursday, April 19th to Sunday, April 22nd. Performances are at 7:00 pm each night. Tickets are $10.

Andrew Morris will visit the Ojai Library at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 14, to deliver a presentation titled “A Spirituality of Imperfection at Work.” Morris comes from CSU Channel Islands, and is the third speaker in this season’s CI Library Lecture Series.

CSU Channel Islands hosts dozens of free public lectures at libraries throughout Ventura County as part of this program. The lecturers are experts from numerous departments.

Author Elizabeth Gould will visit the Ojai Library at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 21, to deliver a presentation on her book Your Best Health by Friday. Learn how childhood trauma can kill us as adults, why our left-brain dominant society is facing so much illness, and action steps to develop the right hemisphere to heal.

Gould began writing for one reason: she was too sick to return to her career as an import operations manager for a large women’s clothing manufacturer. When she started she had no idea how to write professionally and had not written at all since college. Six years later she had not only gotten the hang of writing, she was also a lot healthier.

The Ojai Photo Club will feature photographer and documentary cinematographer Sarah Bourscheid as its guest presenter for April. The free event, “Quiet Compassion,” will be held on Tuesday, April 17, at 7 p.m. in Help of Ojai’s Kent Hall, 111 W. Santa Ana St.
