Nov.11: Veteran’s Day at the Flag Memorial located on the corner at Victoria Avenue and Telephone Road. Rain or shine. There is plenty of parking nearby.  The program starts at 11a.m. sharp. The ceremony is family friendly and lasts about 1 hour. Celebrate our brave soldiers. The Gold Star families (those who have lost a loved one) will be honored as well.

Nov.15: East Ventura Community Council meeting a representative from Ashdon Development will present an update on the types of stores being proposed for the 4.7-acre parcel on the southeast corner of Darling and Wells Road. Community Development Department will hold a General Plan Update Workshop, to include a presentation by City Staff followed by group exercises and solicitation of ideas from those attending. In addition, the agenda includes a representative of the Ventura Police Department who will report on neighborhood crime and safety.

Nov. 17: Winter Craft Show at Ventura County Estates on Saturday from 9 AM to 2 PM. Located at 10685 Blackburn Rd. in Ventura. The craft show will take place in the clubhouse. Lots of handmade crafts, jewelry, baked goods and more. Great gift ideas for the holidays!! This event is open to the public.

Nov.18: The Ventura and Santa Barbara County chapter of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors (NAWCC) will meet Sunday, in the Campus Student Center of Ventura College, 4667 Telegraph Road.

The regular meeting starts at noon and at 11:00 there will be an informal workshop where a topic on clocks or watches will be demonstrated and discussed. There will be a mart where items will be for sale followed by lunch and an informational meeting and a program at 1:00 pm.

The program this month will be a presentation by Ray Marsolek on Lathes for Watch and Clock Repair.

There is a $3 admission charge. Lunch will be available for $5.00.

Nov. 23, 24, 25,30; December 1,2,7,8,9.  Come celebrate the spirit of holidays past at the historic Dudley House.  The 25th year of this annual fundraiser for the museum features quality crafts, home décor, antiques and collectibles and a tearoom with refreshments, silent auction and bargain items.  Hours are 10 – 6 p.m. with a flea market added on Sundays.  The Dudley House is located on the corner of Loma Vista and Ashwood, 197 N. The gathering will be devoted to inner reflection, quiet walks, wisdom talks, sacred songs, and expressing gratitude for all the good in our lives.

The Ojai Holiday Home Tour & Marketplace kicks off the holiday season on November 10 and November 11, 10am to 4pm. Presented by the Ojai Festival Women’s Committee, this treasured tradition highlights the diverse neighborhoods of the Ojai Valley by featuring four distinctive Ojai homes adorned with floral inspirations by designers.

Entering its 22nd year, the tour benefits the Ojai Music Festival and its BRAVO education and community program, which offers free music workshops to the Ojai Valley public schools.

Also taking place the same weekend is the Holiday Marketplace held at Thomas Aquinas Church Hall. This companion event will feature a collection of curated lifestyle and fashion items from more than 40 vendors. Admission is free and open to the public.

Tour price is $40 per person and $45 day of the event which can be purchased at the Holiday Marketplace. Tickets are available at 805-646-2053 and OjaiFestival.org.

Ojai Herbal Symposium on “Natural Resilience” will be going on in the Krotona Hall and various downtown locations, from November 16th to the 18th. There will be respected practitioners, authors, and speakers. This program is open to the public. Other events are the Chaparral Auditorium, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m to 6 p.m. There will also be the Phytotherapeutic Phunk Dance and Elixir Bar for attendees 21 yaers of age and older which will be on Saturday night, from 8:00 p.m to 11:00 p.m. at Greater Goods in Meiners Oaks. The Ojai Film Festival annually honors an actor and a cinematographer for a lifetime of outstanding works. The Lifetime Achievement Award for Acting goes to Ojai local Malcolm McDowell who is recognized for his six-decades of cutting-edge work.
This year’s recipient for the Lifetime Achievement in Cinematography goes to one of the first women members of the American Society of Cinematographers, Ellen Kuras, ASC, widely regarded as a pioneer for all filmmakers.

Filmmakers need financing. It’s that simple. This has been a problem for more than a century. Emily Best, the leading online fundraiser who brought in millions for new films, will speak on “The Art of the Pitch” at the Ojai Film Festival, November 3.

This seminar is part of the Film Festival’s Professional Development sessions that includes Legal and Business with Laura Caulfield, in-depth with Ellen Kuras, ASC, Action in Film with stunt coordinator John Branagan, and Loving Vincent, a screening of the Academy Award nominated animation and demonstration session with artists/animators Tiffanie Mang and Charlene Mosley.

The Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts will present BeatoFest, on Saturday, November 10th. This day-long event will begin at 10 am with artists exhibiting work on the back patio of the Center, presenting an opportunity to meet and acquire work directly from the artists. Live music will be presented throughout the day.

At 2 pm, there will be Opening Receptions for two new exhibitions. Intersection: Art & Life is being presented in the Beato Gallery in conjunction with the publication of a book of the same name, written by Kevin Wallace, director of the Center. In Logan Gallery, there will be an exhibition of artist/members of the Ventura County Potters’ Guild.

Alex Murad, director of animal welfare at Rancho Grande, announced the formation of the Rancho Grande Scholarship Fund on Behalf of Animals. The fund will provide an annual award of $5,000 in tuition assistance or other school expenses to the winner of a 500-word essay on the importance of protecting the rights and welfare of animals.

The first award will be made in August 2019 for the 2019-20 school year. In its first year, the award will be restricted to students attending the Besant Hill School because of its small size, well-rounded and well–respected reputation, and its willingness to create opportunities for all of its. In future years, the program may be expanded to other private high schools in Ojai. Applications are due no later than July 1, 2019 and can be emailed to[email protected].

The winning applicant’s essay will explain the writer’s thoughts on animal care and describe what enhancing the wellbeing of animals means to them.

Dale Villani, was recently installed as a new member of the Board of Directors for Community Action of Ventura County (CAVC). CAVC maintains a tripartite board with equal representation from public, private, and low-income sectors.

Dale Villani joined Gold Coast Health Plan as chief executive officer in 2015. The Plan manages Medi-Cal benefits for nearly 200,000 county residents. As CEO, Dale works to ensure that the Plan’s members, which include 1 in 5 county residents, have access to high-quality medical care and services.

He has more than 36 years of operational experience in companies including Aetna and Magellen. Dale and his wife Amy reside in Ojai and he enjoys spending time with his two daughters and grandson.

The international board of directors and officers of Lions Clubs International (LCI) will be meeting in Ojai from October 11-17th to discuss global vision issues and a new campaign to fight adult diabetes which often leads to vision problems. They will be led by Mrs. Gudrun Ingvadottir from Iceland who is the first female international president in the 101 year history of the organization. The event is jointly hosted by the Ventura Downtown and Ojai Valley lions clubs at the Ojai Valley Inn. Local clubs along with a matching grant from LCI have recently raised $200,000 to establish an adult diabetes center in Oxnard.

The Ojai Storytelling Festival, Oct. 25-28 will be celebrating its 18th year with a stellar lineup of acclaimed storytellers from around the world in the beautiful Libbey Bowl. Tickets for individual performances as well as weekend passes are available. Friday. Alan Thornhill and Marting Young will be there on Friday night, and Cindy Kalmensen and the Lucky Ducks will be there on Saturday.

Festival organizer Brian Bemel says, “Listeners will definitely hear traditional tales, but many of this year’s tellers will offer a very modern take with stories firmly rooted in today’s culture.”

The Ojai Photography Club will host Ojai based photographer Cindy Pitou Burton presenting “The Journey from Photojournalism to Fine Art” on Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. in Ojai’s Kent Hall, 111 W. Santa Clara Street. California Coastal Horse Rescue (CCHR) in Ojai, will host its Annual Octoberfest Saturday, October 13, 12 noon to 4:00 p.m. at the Ranch at 600 West Lomita Ave.

The community is invited to this event, which includes a beer and wine garden, live music, SoCal Comfort Food Truck, games and activities for children, and, of course, the stars of the day – the CCHR horses.

An all-volunteer, non-profit organization, CCHR’s mission is to rescue abandoned, abused, neglected and slaughter-bound horses and provide them with a second chance at living healthy, happy and productive lives. The cost for this event is $10 per person. Kids under 6 are free

On Monday, October 29, the Ojai Art Center Literary Branch welcomes David Mellon who will talk about his transition from painting to writing, how he got his novel published, as well as doing a reading from that novel. It was when he discovered the UCLA Extension Writers’ Program that his literary aspirations were ignited.  His first book, Silent, was nominated for the 2016 Allegra Johnson Prize

Sept.15: The Los Padres Ski and Social Club will be participating in the Coastal Clean-up day on Saturday, from 9 am to noon. Meet at the entrance to Marina Park, on the corner of Pierpont and Greenock Lane. Join in on this worldwide coastal clean-up event and, in doing so, get to know some of the LPSC members. You might just decide to become a member yourself. Look for members wearing their black LPSC shirts.

Sept. 15: The Nature Conservancy is hosting the annual Coastal Cleanup Day in partnership with the Ventura County Coalition for Coastal & Inland Waterways. Ormond beach, 301 McWane Blvd, Oxnard from 9-12 p.m. TNC will provide clean up materials, bags, gloves, trash grabbers. Please wear durable shoes and sun protection. Sept. 16: The Ventura and Santa Barbara County chapter of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors (NAWCC) will meet Sunday, in the Campus Student Center of Ventura College, 4667 Telegraph Road. The regular meeting starts at noon and at 11a.m.  The program this month will be a presentation by Bill Robinson on “Early American Clocks”. Bill is a long-time collector of American clocks from the first part of the 19th centura..  $3 admission charge. Sept.22: Ormond beach and wetland hike hosted by The Nature Conservancy. Come visit Ormond beach with a naturalist and discover the flora and fauna of the wetland and beach habitat. Robin Nahin, owner of Firestick Pottery, will visit the Ojai Library on Saturday, September 29, at 1 p.m. to teach a hands-on pottery workshop. This interactive workshop will allow participants to learn the basics of working with clay to create art.

Clay is a magical material—use it to turn your fantasy into a real piece of art. You can take your project home with you or go to the Firestick Pottery Studio to have it kiln-fired.
