Vol. 15, No. 17 – May 18 – May 31, 2022 – Ojai News & Events

Renowned quartet Gov’t Mule – led by GRAMMY® Award-winning vocalist, songwriter, guitar legend, and producer Warren Haynes – will be heading out on a U.S. summer tour supporting their critically acclaimed, chart-topping blues album, Heavy Load Blues. The cross-country outing, incorporating a mix of headlining shows, festival appearances and select multi-band/support dates, will be stopping locally in Ojai on Sunday, June 19 at Libby Bowl. The Ojai Art Center is kicking off its 45th annual Art in the Park celebration Memorial weekend on May 28 and May 29, 2022. Unlike last year’s socially distant Art in the Park, 2022, Walking through downtown Ojai’s Libbey Park where over 80 artists will showcase their recent works. 

Last year’s Best of Show, Lungala Nzalamba, returns to Art in the Park. He uses a wax resistant fabric dying technique called batik to create vibrant and relatable images.

For 34 years, the Ojai Wine Festival has served as the primary non-profit fundraising effort of the Rotary Club of Ojai West Foundation and its numerous philanthropic endeavors. This year, proceeds from the Ojai Wine Festival will benefit local charities including HELP of Ojai, Secure Beginnings, Ojai Unified School District, and support the free Ojai Community Band concerts in Libbey Bowl in July and August. Historically, proceeds from the Ojai Wine Festival have donated more than $1,400,000 to Rotary’s charity efforts around the world. 

This year, event participants of the 34th Annual Ojai Wine Festival can taste wines from all of California’s unique growing regions in one beautiful lakeside location.

Many children and teens have experienced the death of a loved one during the pandemic. This is a difficult time for anyone grieving a loss. Livingston’s Grief and Bereavement Program recognizes the value children and teens receive from sharing their grief experience with their peers. Our groups provide support, connection and validation that they are not alone.

The Good Grief Club meets the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month from 5:30 to 7 pm

The Young Teen Group meets the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month from 5:30 to 6:30 pm

The Ventura Senior Men’s Group continues to meet for a social lunch and program at the Poinsettia Pavilion on the first and third Tuesday each month. May 19: The East Ventura Community Council will meet via zoom on Thursday. Meredith Hart, the city of Ventura’s new Economic Development Manager, will talk about plans within the city’s business community. In addition, Ventura County Ballot Measures A and B will be discussed. Commander Weeks of the Ventura Police Department will share the area crime statistics. The Council represents those who live east of Victoria Avenue, and the public is encouraged to attend and participate. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m., link below. May 19: Join in the fun at our Channel Islands Gulls Fundraising Luncheon and help raise funds for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI Ventura). NAMI is a grassroots, family and consumer self-help support and advocacy organization dedicated to improving the lives of people with severe mental illnesses. The Luncheon will be on Thursday at Yolanda’s, 86 East Daily Drive, Camarillo. Social hour will be at 11 a.m. and Noon for meeting. Cost: $40 per person – Advance reservations and payment required. May 21-22: The Gold Coast Gem Show is coming to the Ventura County Fairgrounds. I will be featuring 30 dealers, including demonstrators and local Gem and Mineral Societies. Diane Cook, the owner of Daisy’s Rocks and Things, has curated a variety of vendors/dealers who specialize in gems, minerals, and fossils. Show goers will find unique and quality specimens, beads, jewelry, and lapidary supplies, including demonstrations and activities for the whole family.

The show is free and open to the public (fairground parking is additional). The show hours are 10-6 p.m. on Saturday, May 21 and 10-4 p.m. on Sunday, May 22. The Ventura County Fairgrounds is located at 10 W. Harbor Blvd.

May 25: The recently passed federal infrastructure bill potentially provides much needed funding for communities like Ventura. Congressperson Salud Carbajal will be explaining to the College Area Community Council how the city can take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. City Councilperson Doug Halter and Ventura Fire Prevention Supervisor Brett Reed will also be speaking. On May 10, at 8:00 pm, Flamenco dancer Savannah Fuentes and singer/multi-instrumentalist, Diego Amador Jr., direct from Seville, will present Eterno, el Flamenco vive, at the Ojai Valley Woman’s Club. Savannah and Diego have forged a unique artistic partnership after a successful summer tour as a duo. Eterno promises to be a dynamic and emotionally charged presentation of authentic Spanish Flamenco music and dance.

Local author Elizabeth Kraus will visit the Ojai Library at 2pm on Saturday, May 21, to discuss her book, 3 Sisters, 3 Weeks, 3 Countries (Still Talking). This presentation will be followed by a brief Q&A session.

A late bloomer, Elizabeth “Liz” Moore Kraus enrolled in Ventura College at age forty-two, earning her MA in English Literature six years later. Join Ojai author and naturalist Lanny Kaufer for a potential once-in-a-lifetime event: a Full Moon Sunset Nature Hike and Total Lunar Eclipse with complete visibility on Sunday evening, May 15, from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. The next time a total lunar eclipse will be visible in Ventura County before 1 a.m. or later at night is August 6, 2036.

On the way up in the daylight, they’ll stop along the trail to meet some valuable edible and medicinal plants including Blue Elderberry, Coastal Sagebrush, Prickly-Pear Cactus, Horehound, Black Sage, Purple Sage, and Chia Sage. Kaufer will have copies of his new book, Medicinal Herbs of California, with him for sale and signing before and after the hike.

May 10: Ventura County Writers Club invites aspiring writers to join their bi-annual “Join a Writing Workshop Group” meeting at 1605 Burnley St. in Camarillo at 7 p.m.
“Anyone interested in writing needs to learn the power of a writing workshop,” says VCWC Vice President Pat Caloia. VCWC is a non-profit volunteer society driven by writers for writers. All club activities are intended to expand writers’ creativity and business skills.

May 21-27: National Safe Boating Week is an excellent time to refresh on safe and responsible boating and ensure you have all safety measures before heading out. On Saturday, boaters and their families are invited to attend the Safe Boating Open House at U.S. Coast Guard Station Channel Islands. Local organizations and public safety agencies will be onsite to provide information on the latest boating safety.

April 21: The East Ventura Community Council virtual meeting will be on Thursday, at 7p.m. The City of Ventura Acting Fire Marshall, Brett Reed, will present information on better protecting our homes and businesses during the continuing drought by building up our “defensible space”. In addition, Eric Berg of Pacific Coast Landscape Design will describe the new inclusive playground at Arroyo Verde Park, built to replace the equipment that was destroyed in the Thomas Fire. Area crime statistics will be shared by Commander Weeks of the Ventura Police Department.

April 30: The day to enjoy beautiful quilts and unusual vehicles as Camarillo Quilters Association present ‘Quilts and Cars on Tour’. The event is open to the public and will feature hundreds of quilts located in gardens, studios, and community centers among the Camarillo, Oxnard and Ventura communities. Doors open 9 a.m. Camarillo Community Center, 1605 E. Burnley, Camarillo, and the Dudley House, 197 Ashwood, Ventura. Guests can purchase tickets for the tour and receive the locations map for the other eight destination. Tickets are $15 per person, and available the day of the event. May 21: The INCA ensemble will perform at the Hill Road Library 1070 S. Hill Road, Ventura at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. Walking Tours of Historic Ojai start at the Ojai Valley Museum. They are offered year-round (except in the hottest months of July-September). Tickets are $10 per adult, $25 per family, children 6-17 and OVM members are $5 and include admission to the museum all day.

The Ojai Valley Museum is located at 130 W. Ojai Avenue in Ojai. Free parking is available behind the museum, off Blanche Street. Join author and plant educator Lanny Kaufer for a leisurely evening stroll on the historic wetland that is now the Ojai Meadows Preserve on Wednesday, April 13, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

For decades the wetland was buried under sediment and fill dirt from nearby construction. A grove of non-native Eucalyptus trees was planted in the 1950s, negating the possibility of native habitat returning on its own.

Before the walk, Kaufer will have copies of his book, Medicinal Herbs of California, available for sale and signing.

April 9: Come blossom with the Turning Point Foundation. Our nursery will be in full bloom during our uplifting Spring Fling event from 10-2 p.m. Blossoming with health and wellness ideas, live music, delicious food, and stunning plants for sale that will all go to a beautiful cause. Our Spring Fling is open to the public of all ages. So, bring your kids, grandkids, neighbors, and friends for an inspirational day at Growing Works Nursery! 1736 S. Lewis, Camarillo. We’re excited to meet some new faces and celebrate our years of caring for homeless populations and veterans!

April 12: Ventura County Writers Club is glad to announce that Alicia Doyle will be the speaker for the upcoming meeting. With more than two decades of experience, the award-winning journalist will bring her expertise to the industry and her vast knowledge of storytelling. The Ventura Investment Group has reconvened and is meeting in the rear room of Denny’s Restaurant at the corner of Telegraph and Ashwood each Monday at 10:30 a.m. All people interested in investment are welcome.

March 23: Ventura’s E.P. Foster Library will present a musical program, Lyrical Literature: The Songs and Theater Music of Ross Care, at 2pm on Saturday, March 26, in the Topping Room of Foster Library. Care is both a composer and a published author, and this program will be based on musical literary associations from poetry and theater.

Tyler Carlisle will serve as musical director/pianist with guest instrumentalists from Los Angeles, Ted Nichelson, harp, and Juan Antonio Rivera, flute. The vocal ensemble will include Ventura vocalists Dianna Burdick, Molly Kohler Pei, Steve Perren, and Peter Umipig. Ross Care will be serving as moderator.

April 6: Beach Cities Neighbors and Newcomers (BCNN,) organization for women from Oxnard, Ventura and Port Hueneme will feature Chef Amy Tyrrell at its meeting at 9:30 a.m. located at the Ventura Comedy Club in Ventura Harbor. Chef Tyrrell is trained at the Culinary Institute and other well-known programs. Chef’s passion is providing nutrition information and great food to the community and is well known for the outstanding food program she developed and got accredited at our county’s Todd Road Jail, a program profiled in our local newspaper. No charge for newcomers to get to know our group.

April 22: Channel Islands PC User Group (CIPCUG) will have a discussion, tutorial, and Q&A sessions centered around Computers, email and the Internet, social media brokers such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Google, and Yahoo. March 13: Olivas Adobe 4200 Olivas Park Drive Sunday from 11- 3 p.m. Spring Flora & Local Landscapes exhibit. Artists Lisa Mahony and Laura Jespersen explore spring flora and local landscapes in this new exhibit coming to the small Adobe. “Meet the Artists” reception from 1-3 p.m. with light refreshments. Any art purchased on opening day is eligible for 10% off the price. Plein-air artists are welcome! The historic Olivas home will be open for docent lead tours, and the alfresco gift shop will be available.

March 17: At the next virtual meeting of the East Ventura Community Council on Thursday, City of Ventura Civil Engineer Cody Stults will present an update on the city’s street paving program. Arepresentative from County Supervisor Matt LaVere’s office will report on the newly formed Saticoy Municipal Advisory Committee. Area crime statistics will be shared by Commander Weeks. Other topics may be added to the agenda, so be sure to check the group’s Facebook page for additions.

April 3: Open house tours of the 1892 Dudley Historic House Museum will take place on Sunday, from 1 to 4 p.m. along with a celebration of Ventura’s 156th birthday. Special exhibits in the Community Room will include an Historic Photo Timeline of Ventura consisting of 16 panels of photos from the past. Enter the world of the actor’s mind. “This Is A Play” by Daniel MacIvor allows the audience to hear what the actors think while they perform. Theatergoers enter through the back and sit onstage, surrounding by the cast. Director Gai Jones presents talented actors Suzy Thatcher, Denise Heller, David Taylor, and Buddy Wilds in this intriguing play. Tickets: $10, cash or check, available only at the backstage door starting at 6:30 p.m..

The safety of our theater patrons is paramount. Proof of COVID vaccination with a valid ID must be presented to gain entrance to the Ojai Art Center. Mask requirements determined by County regulations at time of performance.

The Ojai Art Center is the longest continuously-operating multi-disciplinary center serving the arts in the State of California. Opened in 1939, the Center has eight branches for the various art disciplines. The Theater Branch presents a variety of dramatic productions, ranging from comedy to drama and musicals, annually. The branch holds its own directors and monthly meetings on the first Tuesday of the month to address all theater-related issues.
