All of us at CAPS Media love this time of year. Organizations are lining up their events, school programs are in progress and elections are on their way. This year, for the first time, local elections are happening concurrently with the national elections. This will be great for voter turnout and a challenge to get information on the candidates and issues laid out in the 222-page voter informational guide.  During the year and, in particular, in election years, CAPS Media is a go-to place for information. You can learn about the state ballot initiatives, local city and school district candidates and follow the various election forums so you can be up to speed when you cast your ballot.  Our Video Voter program lets you meet the candidates and hear what they think. We have been recording 3 full days with the candidates in the studio and are sharing a lot of information.  The shows are airing now on CAPS channel 6 and streaming on the web at CAPSMedia.org. Check the website for dates and times.

The ECTV crew got a head start on ArtWalk with an interview with MB Hanrahan and finished their first show covering Ms. Hanrahan, Digital Citizenship and high flying acrobats.  These students are fulfilling their lab work volunteering on our studio and location projects. We have a lot going on.

Curbside Coffee with the Ventura Police Department at Elmhurst was the place to be with our cameras. The celebration of Helen Yunker at the Ventura County Museum in downtown Ventura was a pleasure and we captured great stories about her and Ventura.  We celebrated the firefighter and heroes’ awards for our public safety officers and our own Suz Montgomery. Our Ventura Legacies program moves along with our Tortilla Flats episodes and there is more of William Schneider Senior and his stories.

Our member programming is rich and diverse from travel to music to drama to politics.  As CAPS Media is a membership organization, we honor our members each and every day and support their creativity and help share their voice through training and mentorship. Their voice and yours is part of the story covered by CAPS and all media in Ventura. Check out our social media pages including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and You Tube. View it all on our frequently updated website. A yearly membership at CAPS is only $25, a best bargain for media fans, students and organizations to share your story.  Go to www.capsmedia.org or call 805-658-0500 for more information.

Folk fest to metal fest
by Pam Baumgardner
VenturaRocks.com

High at the top of my list of things to do over the next few weeks is the Topa Topa Folk Fest being held at the beautiful Libbey Bowl in Ojai on Saturday, October 1. Ticket sales have been brisk, which is great because I’d love to see this one sell out as it also helps to benefit the Turning Point Foundation.  Headlining the folk fest will be Jake Smith better known as The White Buffalo whose music has been featured on such TV shows as “Sons of Anarchy” and “Californication.” I’m also excited to see Grizfolk after watching local talent Brendon Willing share his adventures via social media after joining the band over a year ago. Actually, the whole lineup is pretty cool with Jaime Wyatt, Todd Hannigan, Shane Alexander, Lee Koch, Bryan Titus and so many more talented folks. Find out more at www.OnesToWatchProductions.com. You can help make a difference while enjoying a great day of music, hope to see you there!

Another Turning Point Foundation fundraising was held at the Traveler’s Café on Thursday, September 22 when Shawn Jones entertained the room.  It was the perfect opportunity for people to check out one of Ventura’s newest restaurants offering up live acoustic music on select days. Shawn by the way heads back to Europe the first week in October for about a month with shows in Italy and Ireland.

The highly anticipated return of Cirth Ungol (their first show in 25 years) is finally upon us as they headline Frost and Fire II at the Ventura Theater on October 8, and to sweeten the deal even further, Metal Blade Records released the band’s classic “Paradise Lost” on CD and vinyl. Frost and Fire II actually spans three days (October 7-9) and three venues (Bombay’s, Sans Souci and the Ventura Theater).  This heavy metal festival isn’t for the light of heart and will most likely sell out (Day one already sold out at press time).  To get the full line up of bands and schedules go to www.FrostAndFireFest.com.

Plan B will be celebrating their 4th anniversary with their popular Second Sunday Supper for October (on the 9th), featuring The Vonettes. The venue is also working on Friday nights for live music on a regular basis.

Squashed Grapes is excited to welcome Ronnie Hudson on Saturday, October 8.  Hudson is most notable for his hit song “West Coast Poplock” which would later appear on Dr. Dre and Tupac Shakur’s song, “California Love” and Snoop Dogg’s “Poplock 2”. Hudson also played bass on the legendary Grammy-winning soundtrack “Shaft” by Isaac Hayes, and his work is featured in other films including “The Social Network”, “Iron Man II” and “South Central.”

Ian McKeever crowned Homecoming King at Buena High

Mia Mumford, Buena senior and member of the homecoming court, Ian’s teacher Robin Fenstermacher, Ventura County Office of Education (VCOE) Special Education Teacher and Ian McKeever are as happy as can be.

Ian McKeever and his family dad Terry, mom Robin and sisters Sydnee and Kaia live in Ventura. Ian has been a Ventura County Office of Education (VCOE) student at Buena High School for 4 years with his teacher, Robin Fenstermacher.  VCOE operates special education programs at schools throughout Ventura County. This is the first time a VCOE special education student has been crowned homecoming king or queen.

Ian is in a special day class at Buena High School with students with moderate/severe disabilities.

Ian is well-liked on campus and looks forward to social interaction with his peers and many peer T/A’s in class.  A highlight of his senior year was being nominated and eventually crowned king at Buena’s 2016 Homecoming.  The support and acceptance of Ian was apparent at the crowning during the Homecoming game on Friday night and the Homecoming dance on Saturday.  He had a blast dancing all night long with a long line of enthusiastic girls. Ian’s next step after graduation in June is to continue his Post-Secondary education with the TEAMS program at Dorothy Boswell School in Ventura.

Thanks to the support and inclusion at Buena High School from staff and students, dreams can come true. Dream big…anything is possible!

Community celebrates at Launch Party for 5th Annual Water: Take 1 Online Short Film Festival

Ventura City Councilman Carl Morehouse, Ventura City Clerk Antoinette Mann and Shana Epstein, GM of Ventura Water at the Launch Party.

Over 100 community members and water professionals turned out to celebrate the launch of the 5th annual Water: Take 1 film festival at the Crowne Plaza Ventura Beach hotel held Wednesday night, Sept. 21. City of Ventura Councilmembers Carl Morehouse and Jim Monahan were among the local dignitaries present.

Morehouse told the crowd that the city’s film festival has a global reach. It’s also launched a year-round dialogue that has grown to include two annual events plus a monthly newsletter. “This invites an international audience to share our message online,” Morehouse said.

“Water: Take 1 is a homegrown campaign that keeps the conversation going not only about the importance of local sustainable initiatives, but also the global perspective that sharpens our local focus back to a ‘one water’ mindset as you will see tonight,” said the event host, Ventura Water General Manager Shana Epstein.   “Ventura Water is pleased to showcase the topic of water protection, conservation and sustainability to like-minded individuals and organizations in such a creative and engaging way.  With the drought uppermost in the minds of Californians, this Short Film Festival brings together our local, national and global conversations.”

Finally, Epstein thanked the many sponsors and partners who made Water: Take 1 possible.

Water: Take 1 aims to create a greater awareness of water as a valuable resource by inviting filmmakers worldwide to submit short films of five minutes or less in any genre – drama, documentary, comedy, animation, sci-fi or experimental – that address the topic of water. Awards include the Audience Choice Award, voted on by the general public with the winner receiving an iPad; the award for Best Student Short Film, chosen by a jury of entertainment and water industry experts with a GoPro camera for a prize; the Grand Prize of $1,500 presented by Ventura Water; and the Ventura Vision Award, which recognizes films shot in and around Ventura and offers a $500 cash prize.

Film submissions are now being accepted through Dec. 14. Winners will be announced at a celebration event to be held in Ventura in the spring of 2017. Last year, 48 films were entered from around the globe.

Expanding on last year’s efforts to engage other local water agencies, the Palmdale Water District was introduced as a new partner and is sponsoring the Palmdale Vision Award, recognizing films that best represent its mission and objectives, also for a $500 cash prize.

Other new film festival partners include Change the Course (http://changethecourse.us), a national movement to engage the public, the community and corporations to restore fresh water to people and nature, and Waves for Water (www.wavesforwater.org), which has a focused international mission to bring clean water to the entire world.
