The Compassionate Friends of West Ventura County is a support group for those who have experienced the loss of a child. Parents, grandparents, and siblings (over age 14) are all welcome. Cross Town Hikers join in on Wednesday nights for a moderate-paced hike that includes views of Ventura from the cross, a walk out to the end of the pier, and a stroll along the Promenade back to the Museum. The members of the Ventura Investment Group meet on Mondays for an informal discussion of recent economic events.  Topics cover current events that affect stocks, funds, real estate, and interest-bearing investments.  From 10 – 11:30 a.m. at the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf at Telephone Road and Main Street.  Visitors and potential members are welcomed.  There are no dues or requirements to participate, and all levels of experience are welcomed.

Oct. 15: The Retired Men’s Group will meet next on October 15 and November 5 at 11:30 a.m. at the Poinsettia Pavilion. Oct 15: Women’s Bible Study from 9 – 11:15 a.m. Community Presbyterian Church 1555 Poli St. Every Tuesday morning following the school calendar. Oct. 17: The regular monthly meeting of Assistance League of Ventura County will be on Thursday, at the Chapter House, 913 East Santa Clara St. The meeting begins at 10 a.m., men and women are welcome, and there is no age requirement. Oct. 17: The East Ventura Community Council will host a Town Hall event on Thursday. Councilmembers Erik Nasarenko and Jim Friedman will be the featured speakers and will take all questions. A representative from Ventura’s Police Department will present an update on crime and safety in the area. Books in good condition are solicited on behalf of Ventura Friends of the Library. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the Connect Church, 346 N. Kimball Road.

Oct. 19: October is the best time to plant California Native Plants. Please join renowned California Native Plant Educator- Lanny Kaufer as he talks all about native plants. Learn how to identify these natural wonders, use them in your landscape, and daily life. Saturday, from 10 – 12 p.m. at Green Thumb Nursery- 1899 S. Victoria Ave. (805)642-8517. This event is free.

Oct. 20: The Ventura and Santa Barbara County chapter of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors (NAWCC) will meet Sunday, in the Campus Student Center of Ventura College, 4667 Telegraph Road. The regular meeting starts at noon and at 11a.m. The program this month will be a presentation on Timepieces from the House of Faberge. Oct. 25: Harvest Festival, Costume parade, carnival games, crafts, haunted house, cake walk, bingo, dinner and more! Nov.3: Unitarian Universalist Church of Ventura presents “What ‘Never Again’ Means in a Country that Cages Children,” a talk by Adam Schwartz of Never Again Action, on Sunday, from 11:30-1 p.m. at 5654 Ralston St. Never Again Action is a mass national mobilization of Jewish people and allies who see parallels between current events and the history of the Jewish people in Nazi Germany. For more information refer to the church website, uuventura.org. Nov.6: BCNN is a women’s social club open to ladies who reside in Ventura, Oxnard and Pt Hueneme.  Meetings are held on the 1st Wednesday of each month from 9:30 – 11a.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 36 Figueroa St. Parking is on Santa Clara Avenue. Guests are welcome a couple times before becoming a member; dues are $30/year.  Jodie Okun, interior design & decorating company, will do an interactive presentation – a discussion of bookshelves, furniture arrangement, colors, etc

Oct 14: 8:30 a.m. Laguna Tams – Leader: Adele Fergusson (805) 415-4304
The tamarisk trees at Laguna Rd are a migrant hot spot. Migrating birds mostly warblers are attracted to the insects in the trees and several uncommon to rare birds often show up at this location.

Oct 19: 8 a.m. Ojai Meadows – Leader: Tevin Schmitt (661) 904-1563
This beautiful preserve is a birding hotspot and includes a restored wetland and native plantings. Target birds will include: Western Bluebirds, Sora, White tailed Kites, Western Meadowlark, Merlin, Lark Sparrow, Lincoln’s Sparrow and White-crowned Sparrows.

There will be lots of walking, so wear comfortable shoes and bring snacks and water. Bring scopes if you have them! Target birds will include: the resident Bald Eagles, Green Heron, Chipping and Lark Sparrows, Common Merganser and Spotted Sandpiper. We hope to see a lot of Hawks.
