Ventura Police Department Doubles K9 Unit

After years of operating with a reduced K9 Unit, the Ventura Police Department has restored full K9 Unit strength, doubling its capacity with the addition of two newly trained police dogs and bringing the unit to four total K9s.

The expansion marks a significant investment in public safety, increasing officer safety, and strengthening the department’s ability to manage critical and high-risk incidents throughout the city and surrounding region. Officer Noah Brown is partnered with K9 Shine, purchased by local business Shine Supply, and Officer Brent Stronge is partnered with K9 Torque, funded through a donation from Automotive Racing Products (ARP). Shine Supply and ARP contributed $35,000, covering the cost of the dogs and their training.

On February 20, 2026, both dogs graduated from a six-week training academy, where they received instruction in obedience, searching, apprehension, protection work, and narcotics detection. Both dogs will eventually be trained in hard surface and urban tracking.

“K9s are one of our most effective de-escalation and officer safety tools,” said Chief David Dickey. “Their presence often limits physical confrontations, increases public safety, and leads to quicker resolutions because suspects often choose to surrender. This expansion was made possible because local businesses stepped up in a meaningful way, and our entire community benefits from that commitment.”

K9s are commonly deployed during searches for armed or fleeing suspects, missing or vulnerable persons, and evidence recovery. By locating individuals or items more efficiently, K9s help shorten incidents that might otherwise escalate or place officers at greater risk.

“This city gave me a shot in 1996 when I was just starting out with a single truck and a few buckets,” said Jeremy Stevens, owner of Shine Supply. “Coming full circle nearly 30 years later to purchase K9 Shine is deeply personal. Ventura’s K9 Unit is community-funded, and there was zero hesitation to step up for the officers who protect our community every day. We are honored to give back to the city that helped make us what we are today.”

All K9s, past and present, have been paid for through the generosity of our community, local businesses, and fundraising through the National Police Dog Foundation. All funds raised cover the cost of each dog, their training, veterinary care, protective gear, and more.
