Ventura Commits to Honoring Chumash Roots

On October 7, the Ventura City Council adopted a Chumash Land Acknowledgment, recognizing the enduring connection of the Chumash people to this region. Developed by the Arts & Culture Commission through a collaborative and thoughtful process informed by community input, the acknowledgment reflects the City’s commitment to honoring local Indigenous heritage.

The City extends its gratitude to the Chumash community members who shared their insights and knowledge throughout the process. A dedicated webpage will soon be launched to feature the Land Acknowledgment and highlight the City’s ongoing efforts to honor this commitment.

Chumash Land Acknowledgement

  • We acknowledge that we are gathered on unceded Chumash land.
  • We recognize the value of the Chumash who have been the original stewards of this region for thousands of years.
  • We celebrate their unbroken legacy and ancestral knowledge, and their relationship to xutaš (Mother Earth).
  • We respect their enduring strength and resilience despite the historical injustices of colonization, missionization and genocide.
  • The Chumash are a living, thriving people whose wisdom, creativity, and leadership continues the care of our community and Mother Earth.

The City of Ventura declares that recognition requires ongoing education, meaningful action, and equitable partnerships that uplift and support the Chumash people of Ventura.
