’Tis the Season to Have Fun While Being Active with Everyone

The holidays bring fun activities to look forward to and time spent with family and
friends. It’s a wonderful time for all ages, but it can be especially meaningful for seniors.
Festive social gatherings, where friends and family come together to celebrate, do
wonders for mental health and help prevent feelings of loneliness and isolation.

Time with others is essential at every stage of life, but as we age, the holidays provide
special opportunities to reflect on our lives, share experiences with loved ones, and
create new memories that bring joy throughout the year.

Suggestions for Making the Holidays Cheerful and Joyous

Share memories and traditions with younger generations

Reuniting with children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren offers a wonderful
chance to bond. Fun activities might include driving around town to enjoy holiday lights
and decorations, cooking and sharing a meal, singing carols, looking through family
photo albums, doing arts and crafts, or watching holiday movies. These moments lift
spirits and spread joy among loved ones.

Take time to reflect and look ahead

The holidays are a great time to pause and think about the year gone by. Many seniors
stay busy or get lost in the routine of retirement. Make this season a time to slow down,
reflect on what has happened, and plan for the new year ahead—setting goals and
intentions that inspire you.

Reconnect spiritually with yourself and others

The holidays are a meaningful time to renew your faith or spirituality. Many families
incorporate religious or spiritual traditions into their celebrations. This is a wonderful
moment to give thanks for the many blessings in your life.

Give back and help your community

Many seniors volunteer during the holidays—from caroling to coat drives and food
collections. Helping others not only supports those in need but also provides a sense of
purpose and fulfillment. Volunteering keeps you active and allows you to share your
talents and compassion with others.

Stay active

During the hustle and bustle of the season, it’s easy to feel tired or overwhelmed by all
the preparations and events. One of the best ways to manage holiday stress is to keep
moving. Exercise boosts energy and stamina, helping you stay healthy and joyful.
Whether it’s a brisk morning walk, a quick workout, or a fun dance session, staying
active will help you feel your best throughout the season.

In my For the Young at Heart dance and fitness classes—specifically designed for
seniors—I love to keep everyone’s spirits high, especially during the holidays. We begin
with upper-body exercises, calisthenics, stretches, and simple arm and leg
combinations. Lively, festive music motivates us to move through jazzy dance steps and
routines. Dancing with others is a wonderful way to focus on your health while having fun and socializing. So grab a partner or a friend, head to the dance floor, and get your body and spirit moving to the beat!

May your holiday season be filled with joy, health and happiness.
