On May 8th, the Rotary Club of Ventura-East hosted an event to celebrate the exemplary achievements of high school students who received scholarships this year. The gathering recognized the students’ commitment to community service and school programs, while highlighting their dedication to making a positive social impact. The Club awarded a total of $135,000 in scholarships, with numerous parents, teachers, counselors, and mentors in attendance to honor the students at the Poinsettia Pavilion Ventura Room in Ventura.
The selection process for scholarships was thorough, involving 60 applicants who submitted essays, transcripts, and recommendation letters. A four-person committee evaluated each application using a points system. Out of these applicants, 16 students from the local high schools including Ventura High School, Pacific High School, Buena High School, and Foothill Technology High School were chosen. Ricardo Zendejas a student from Pacific High School recalled facing some challenges while applying for the scholarship but benefitting from the support and guidance of his counselor, Angela. He expressed gratitude for the scholarship, stating it would alleviate the financial burden of tuition and other educational expenses, making his goals as a culinary chef more attainable. Angela’s encouragement was pivotal in Ricardo’s journey, promoting his aspirations by advising him to “work hard, be yourself, and share your “Why.” This personalized guidance helped Ricardo articulate his passion for culinary arts, which contributed to his successful scholarship application. He was awarded a $1000.00 scholarship for a Culinary Arts program at Oxnard College in the Fall 2025.
Additionally, the Director of Ventura College spoke to a student about the Ventura College Promise (VC promise), which aims to make higher education accessible and affordable for the local community. This initiative offers two years of free tuition for qualified first-time college students, notably those who enroll in 12 units or more and meet specific requirements. The VC Promise not only covers tuition but also provides resources such as academic advising and financial aid assistance to help students navigate their college experience. Max Mechtenberg, one scholarship recipient from Ventura High School, mentioned that he had already earned 13 credits and plans to take advantage of the VC Promise.
At the event, students received scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $7,000. Many recipients expressed their gratitude for the support from their families and the significant roles their teachers and counselors played in their scholarship applications. Extracurricular activities were crucial in the selection process; some students participated in cosmetology programs, while others volunteered with organizations like the Surf riders Foundation. Students showed diverse interests from political science to culinary arts, highlighting their unique paths and ambitions.
The ceremony also celebrated the six Neal Cummings Scholars, each receiving $3,500, who displayed exceptional achievements and varied interests. One of the scholars, a swimming captain, will pursue higher education at Harvard with an impressive GPA. Others included an aspiring Eagle Scout, a dedicated cross-country athlete, and many of these students have been engaged in community service and local volunteer work.
The Eric Nicolet Scholars were awarded $5,000 each and were praised for their resilience, maturity, and compassion. One student articulated that “true leadership extends beyond titles; it involves giving back and using one’s voice for the benefit of others.”
The Jan Lindsay Scholars were awarded $7,000 each and demonstrated exceptional commitment to their communities despite challenges. One notable scholar, Beatrice Barnes, expressed her interests in Political Science and Law and will attend Stanford University, while actively engaging in environmental initiatives and community service.
The scholarship recipients encouraged those not yet graduating from high school to consider applications and to take their academics seriously while also balancing extracurricular activities to gain valuable skills and connections. They stressed the importance of seeking help from mentors, building a strong support network, and mastering time management. Furthermore, they advised younger students to research scholarship opportunities early and to apply for multiple scholarships to increase their chances of success.
Overall, the event articulated the significance of support systems in the students’ educational journeys while celebrating their hard work and dedication to making a positive impact in their communities. The Rotary Club of Ventura-East demonstrates its commitment to education and youth excellence through scholarships supported by its members, the Ventura Club of Ventura-East Foundation, Inc., and generous donors. This collaboration highlights their ongoing efforts to empower young individuals and foster their academic and personal growth in the community. The event not only highlighted the scholarship recipients’ achievements but also served as a testament to the collaborative efforts of educators, families, and community stakeholders in fostering the next generation of leaders.
