Never Forget: Ventura Honors 9/11 Heroes

By Patricia Schallert –

“I was in Kindergarten.”
“I was teaching a class.”
“I was in Japan.”
“I was at the airport waiting for a flight to New York.”

For those who remember the morning of September 11, 2001, the details are often crystal clear. Where we were, what we were doing – the memory is etched in time. These recollections, though personal and varied, are connected by a shared grief and reverence.

We hold onto these moments not just to remember, but because they shape who we become. The events of 9/11 transformed our world and left an indelible mark on our lives and our perspectives.

In Ventura, remembrance takes the form of action. On Saturday, September 7 at 8:30 am, the community gathered at the Crowne Plaza for the annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb- a moving tribute to the heroes who risked and gave their lives in response to the attacks.

Participants climbed the equivalent of 110 stories, symbolizing the height of the World Trade Center towers. It’s not a race, but a personal journey of reflection and respect. Some climbers wore full firefighting gear, honoring the conditions faced by First Responders on that harrowing day.

“This is more than a memorial – it’s a living act of remembrance,” said Ventura Fire Chief David Endaya. “We climb to honor those who ran toward danger and to reflect on their extraordinary courage and sacrifice. This event connects our community in a shared moment of respect, resilience, and gratitude.”

Honoring Local and National Heroes

Now in its 20th year, the 9/11 Stair Climb tradition began in 2005 to honor the 343 firefighters who died during the attacks. Over time, the event has grown across the country, drawing firefighters, law enforcement, civilians, and families who wish to pay tribute.

Locally, the event also recognizes all fallen First Responders throughout Ventura County and beyond – those who continue to put their lives on the line every day.

Proceeds from the event benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, helping support the families of fallen heroes.

Community and Connection

The energy at the Stair Climb was electric – filled with emotion, camaraderie, and unity. Families cheered from the sidelines, offering support to participants and one another. For many, it was a space not only to remember but to reconnect.

The event is not just about physical endurance – it’s about honoring legacy and demonstrating solidarity. For those who cannot climb, spectators are welcome, and donations are encouraged to support the cause. Learn more, donate, or register for next year’s event at www.VenturaFireHonorGuard.org.
