By Liz Kohlberg

On Thursday May 8th, The Builders Club of DeAnza Data Middle School, with the support of the Ventura Kiwanis Club, continued their twenty-year tradition of presenting homemade quilts to the nursing staff of the Ventura County Medical Center Oncology and Chemotherapy Clinic to share with those in need.

During the presentation Nurse Lucas Harmon spoke of the work of VCMC Oncology program and expressed gratitude for the gift of quilts and the work of the students. VCMC administrator Fallon Wallace accepted the quilts as they were handed out by the students and their School Supervisor Chelsea Fahl.

The quilt making began early in the school year when a team of Kiwanis members started teaching the Builders Club how to make knots and stitches.  The clubs meet two times per month. In addition, they worked on other projects that included personalized cards of gratitude to the First Responders of Ventura County. The mission of the Builders Club is to “Build Community”.
